    Common misconception: Sunstone doesn't make sense. Most people were confused bc Sunstone didn't seem to "include Sapphire," but Steven, Sapphire, and Ruby didn't fuse; Steven and Garnet fused. Since Garnet is such a stable fusion, you don't see a distinct Ruby and Sapphire. You see Garnet. The fusion Sunstone is _Garnet_ and Steven, and together they usually encourage the team, hence Sunstone's mascot-esque persona.

      I really want Rebecca Sugar to say that this is canon.
      I always wanted to se Ruby and Sapphire fuse with another gem. Not like Garnet but like themselves. I mean look at Suggilite. She's a fusion of Garnet and Amethyst. You might say that where is Sapphire??? Thats cause Suggilite isnt a fusion of Ruby, Sapphire and Amethyst. She has 2 main personality factors. 1 from Amethyst and 1 from Garnet. The rest is well..... HER. Fusions arent just combined personalities. Yeah, they do play a major roll in deciding the "Main" personality but they arent 50% Garnet and 50% Amethyst personalities. Suggilite just kind of goes after 20% Garnet and 20% Amethyst. The other 60% is Suggilite herself. (This may depend on the stability of the relationship in fusions). So I kinda want to see Sapphire, Ruby and Amethyst fuse together. I think we would get a completly diffrent Suggilite both in personality and in her looks. And what about Opal and Garnet fusing??? I want to see another version of Alexandrite! And imagine what Obsidian would be if Sardonix and Smokey fused!

      The general misconception of that is due to the imagery and subtext. The Sardonyx arc was near a parallel to sexual assault and manipulation regarding consent. Sub in a few words with sex or r//pe and you have yourself the exact same connotation without it. Also a lot of the dancing can be quite... suggestive. I’m aware that fusion doesn’t inherently represent this, but you cannot blame people who may not watch everything or delve into the cesspool fan base to figure out these things and only pick up on subtext. Also Mr Multiverse/Steg is a monstrosity and I know it’s not incest but it leaves the same bitter taste in my mouth for many reasons.

  • @Vi12three45

    Fusion is brilliant. It allows us to see not only the relationship of two characters, but allows them to act in a manner that not only shows the deep connection between the two, but also tells us about the separate Gems.
    Take Opal for example; She's cool, calm and confident. This tells us that not only are Amethyst and Pearl able to contribute to the fusion's traits, but also that they both have the ability to be more like each other, creating an interesting (albeit somewhat unexplored) consequence of Fusion.
    One more note about fusion, is that it allows the artists to get creative. They can create crazy, monstrous beings, or serene and calm warriors purely based on a few traits. Needless to say, Steven Universe would not be anywhere near as great as it is without it.

    • @matti.8465
      @matti.8465 5 лет назад +29

      I always liked that concept but it's false, it just depends on what design the crew likes more.
      Though i personally like to think that the more people are in a fusion the more "messy" it gets on apearance as there are many personalities that may conflict a little.
      Though thanks to the off colors we know a big fusion can work just as well as Garnet.

    • @celestialVocalist
      @celestialVocalist 5 лет назад +32

      I think this might come from the fact with how Malachite looked so monstrous due to her being a toxic relationship and people maybe assumed that when Fluorite was introduced. Fluorite is a fusion of six Gems and thus looks like a giant caterpillar with extra eyes and arms. But Fluorite is different, she's a stable polyamorous relationship and even though she has many Gem components, she has a form that's pleasing to the eye and friendly to approach.

  • @rover1359
    @rover1359 5 лет назад +91

    I think the biggest misconception ever is that fusions are just a combination of the two gem's designs, as in like they take some elements from each character's designs. While this is common in more unstable fusions like malachite and human fusions like Smoky or Stevonnie, I believe that fusions also acquire their own personal looks, while still having a little flair from each component, if any of that makes sense.

    • @oelesp7083
      @oelesp7083 5 лет назад +54

      Actually, the crewniverse confirmed every fusion gem have a single gem counterpart on Homeworld.
      There is even a garnet that appeared in canon (specifically in the game Save the Light) : Hessonite, which irl is a type of garnet.
      And Garnet named herself that way because she saw garnets on Homeworld, and decided thats what she is.
      Canonically, fusions choose their name themself. On Rebecca Sugar's part, she choose fusion gems based on the relationship between the gems, choosing a gemstone that would fit said relationship's "traits".
      For example, real-life opals are known to have a pretty high amount of water in them, however, if the opal dry too much, it can break. And fun fact, just holding the stone against your skin is just enough to keep the gem holding together.
      If we compare that to SU Opal, we can draw quite a few paralels :
      - Opal is very prone to fall apart (from Amethyst and Pearl arguing) just like real-life opals
      - Opal often form and manage to hold together when Amethyst and Pearl wants to protect Steven, just like real-life opals can benefit from a human keeping it close to them
      Random fun fact : real-life malachite becomes toxic in water, but apparently, Rebecca Sugar didn't knew that when designing Malachite

      I think it's clear that with the exception of Opal that Pearl's fusions do enjoy talking. Opal doesn't because it takes a lot of effort to balance the strong personalities between Pearl & Amethyst... and that is the case for more complex fusions also. ie alexandrite & obsidian. Fluorite works as a complex fusion because of their long history together, where as other complex fusions have been more short lived.

    First thing, this was posted on my Birthday! Neat coincidence, just saying. Second, I am just now getting into Steven Universe. I'm in the third season but it was pretty early that I caught on to fusion representing a relationship without having to be intimate. The first one we saw was between a pair of friends/ battle companions. The Rubies combine to become a better soldier.
    Jasper and Lapis Lazuli was a special case. I didn't perceive it as a sour relationship but rather a soldier looking for a tactical advantage and a PoW using that option to bring the soldier down and save the people she's recently learned to trust. The end result built into a problematic relationship because it wasn't a gun or chains that Lapis used, it was Jasper's body and mind.
    That last bit is what makes it so interesting. The fusion is both literal and, depending on the intent, figurative giving it so much meaning and such a powerful mechanical purpose.

    In my opinion, the reason why the misconception that fusion is the gem equivalent of sex exists is because (in many but not all cases) sex is a significant aspect of a relationship. It is two people physically coming together, just like fusion. However, fusion is more symbolic than that. It represents the relationship as a whole, something that people tend to overlook.

I would think Stevonnie can fuse, just not as quickly as say, Obsidean. Yes Steven can fuse with the Gems, but Connie can't, she'd have to fuse with Stevn first in order to even attempt that.

      Hello, I can help clarify this! In the latest official Steven Universe podcast episode, "The Fantasy of Steven Universe", Rebecca was asked a question regarding if other half-gem hybrids like Steven could exist. Misinterpreting it (at first) as Steven fusions, she went on to explain that, "Steven could pull gems into his human fusions", and went on to say that, as long as Steven was the bridge, gems and organic creatures could fuse. So as long as Steven was fused with the organic being first, a gem could then join in the fusion. So you couldn't get just Connie and Pearl fused, but you *_could_* get Stevonnie and Pearl fused. Same goes with any other gem (and any other potential organic fusion Steven has).

But as shown multiple times by Garnet, you don't have to have a dance, and Tiger Jasper shows that you don't even need to like them to fuse.

    • @ToonRuinsOfficial
      @ToonRuinsOfficial  5 лет назад +4

      You need to look at the rest of the context for that episode. She wanted Steven to see her as strong. The creation of Sugilite meant that there was a gem on the field stronger than her. Or if you want an easier answer, the dance could be seen as risque.
      Pearl called Stevonnie inappropriate, because of Homeworld's views on organic lifeforms. At this point in time, she didn't think highly of humans either. She meant it was inappropriate in a sense that a human shouldn't be allowed to partake in fusion with a gem. She'd likely have this thought with any human Steven decided to fuse with, romantic or not.

    fusions are like metaphors for relationships. i think most ppl saying its a metaphor for sex forget that there are gems that fuse for work and such to be stronger and sex there just doesnt make sense or at least in the ways it used. its just a work relationship instead, a representation of them being acquaintances and their shared goals

  • @hobojo153alt4

    I think it's worth noting that being an allegory doesn't mean to be literally the same. And while fusion clearly isn't always a metaphor for sex, it's not hard to understand why some see it as such in some cases assuming they view sex as the most intimate relation one can have.

    I was wondering about fusions who have unstable personalities {not unstable relationships} due to the combination of their counterparts' personalities, like Sugilite. Although she might be more controlled the next time we see her, I just wanted to ask about this part of fusions. Just asking about their personality, aside from the fact that fusions that are manifestations of relationships.

    Also, the less compatible/more unstable a fusion is, the more "monstrous" it will look. In other words, it will have more eyes and limbs. A stable fusion like Garnet is more humanoid, with only one extra eye. Meanwhile Malachite has four eyes, four legs, and two arms. Noting how many extra limbs a fusion has gives a good idea of how stable the relationship is and how well the personalities work with each other. Also, this one is kind of obvious, but typically the more powerful a fusion is the bigger it is.

    Dude I lovveee rainbow quartz 2.0- they’re so coollll, and my second favorite is easily sunstone. I also came up with a theory a while ago that Steven himself is technically a fusion. Like, physically. Throughout the series up until the homeworld arc and future despite all the danger he’s in he’s always been a fun loving kid with a lot of compassion. But, when white diamond split him into two halves, they make contact and dance around before becoming one again. Now this is alright evidence until you think of future, where he starts to basically fall apart and his gem powers go haywire. This is because of what we’ve already discussed with fusions fighting against each other. While he is one person and not a fusion mentally, that’s why when he’s split up he feels so awful, physically during future I imagine his emotional turmoil and self loathing granted him the same effect as when a normal fusion would begin to hate itself. His powers go crazy. This makes even more sense when you think about pink diamond. He’s lived the last few years of his life being compared to her, a person he saw as being horrible due to the words and actions of those around him. He hates pink diamond. So he hates his gem half. Anyways at the end of future, when he finally finds peace with himself, his problems go away. I thought of this the Tuesday before last while sitting on the couch watching the homeworld arc lol
