    4:15 Diagnosis of Cushing
    4:47 Treatment of Cushing
    Cushing's syndrome is the collection of signs and symptoms due to prolonged exposure to glucocorticoids such as cortisol.[3][8][9] Signs and symptoms may include high blood pressure, abdominal obesity but with thin arms and legs, reddish stretch marks, a round red face, a fat lump between the shoulders, weak muscles, weak bones, acne, and fragile skin that heals poorly.[2] Women may have more hair and irregular menstruation.[2] Occasionally there may be changes in mood, headaches, and a chronic feeling of tiredness.[2]
    Cushing's syndrome is caused by either excessive cortisol-like medication such as prednisone or a tumor that either produces or results in the production of excessive cortisol by the adrenal glands.[10] Cases due to a pituitary adenoma are known as Cushing's disease, which is the second most common cause of Cushing's syndrome after medication.[3] A number of other tumors may also cause Cushing's.[3][11] Some of these are associated with inherited disorders such as multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 and Carney complex.[7] Diagnosis requires a number of steps.[4] The first step is to check the medications a person takes.[4] The second step is to measure levels of cortisol in the urine, saliva or in the blood after taking dexamethasone.[4] If this test is abnormal, the cortisol may be measured late at night.[4] If the cortisol remains high, a blood test for ACTH may be done.[4]
    Most cases can be treated and cured.[6] If due to medications, these can often be slowly decreased if still required or slowly stopped.[5][12] If caused by a tumor, it may be treated by a combination of surgery, chemotherapy, and/or radiation.[5] If the pituitary was affected, other medications may be required to replace its lost function.[5] With treatment, life expectancy is usually normal.[6] Some, in whom surgery is unable to remove the entire tumor, have an increased risk of death.[13]

    Worst time of my life before diagnosis! Took 2 years to get it! Gained 80 lbs, moon face, buffalo hump, skin thinning, headaches, sleep disturbances, blood pressure 200/100 ( put on 5 meds, still high)! Was told just getting older 😮 finally diagnosed self with Cushing and demanded testing! Raging Cushings! Large tumor on adrenal gland. Had it removed along with partial kidney removal. Do not give up, keep searching for answers. Have never felt completely cured but tons better!

      I put on 85 lbs in 2 years!!! Doctors keep telling me to lose weight!! I am a wreck!! I have bone loss, excessive fatigue, sweating, insomnia!!! I broke my back last summer because of bone loss!! I have scoliosis!! I kept telling my doctors something was wrong. They kept saying I was over eating & lazy😢 This is inspite of the fact that I have had an adrenal gland tumor for over 5 years!!! They have been gaslighting me!!!🤬🤬🤬 Because of cancer & severe wreck, I have been given large doses of cortisone for the past few years to top it off!! I had a complete meltdown last month, a doctor finally listened to me & diagnosed me with Cushings!!! Hopefully I get the tumor removed soon!!! Your story sounds so much like mine!!!😢😢

      Get your cortisol tested. I've had to go through almost a year of testing before they were able to exclude the other things, like PCOS etc. To be fair, i am in the early stages. Cannot sleep, exhausted all the time, gain weight despite being a low calorie diet (with a dietician) and exercising a lot. But my glucose, A1C, and insulin are fine.

    Getting an MRI today because I recently was diagnosed with PCOS but something is not matching up and they think I could have a tumor. how glucocorticoids medications are used in suppressing the disease

    • @hawaaeedami8692
      @hawaaeedami8692 Год назад +1

      No you get it wrong, he means the normal cortisol production in the body is suppressed by glucocorticoid medications ( in the patients with asthma or other conditions taking glucocorticoids) so a sudden stoppage may lead to serious problems, therefore he recommends gradual decrease of the doses instead of unexpected stopping, so normal cortisol productions in the body functioning again.

      Yes.

    • @annemontgomery3890

      They usually cure it by surgery because that eliminates the cause. There's also something called pseudo-cushings that has the same symptoms,but they don't know the cause, and those often get medication. The meds are pretty invasive as well, though, as you're still messing with hormones.
