Matt, this is long overdue, but i wanted to thank you for this great fly pattern. I tied some for our fall trips to the Iowa Driftless region and it was a trout magnet! Not difficult to tie and a definite fish catcher, it will have a regular place in my box. Thank You!
Well thank you my friend! It's kind of my nod to the tiers of old who used to sit around at their benches in their coats and ties. (Plus I usually film my intros right after work so it's no extra effort to keep my fancy clothes on. :-) )
I do too Jim! I'm starting to notice them more and more these days. And then I notice how tiny ours is. But honestly, I wouldn't want to be towing anything much bigger just yet. I need more practice with this little guy. :-)
Hahaha! And camel too my brother! But I envision you starting to tie more big monster streamers for the water down there in Florida. Not these tiny nymphs for little trout up in NY. :-)
Nice fly! Always something new here. I haven't used either camel nor emu. But I'll definitely be ordering some of both. Thanks and keep up the good work Matt!
Outstanding to hear Troy! Now when are you going to get back to making videos of restoring your die cast cars? I just learned one of my coworkers collects Hot Wheels. I'd love to get into something like that. Maybe someday. :-)
Hi from Rolla MO 🎣🤠 Dave I tye a similar fly but I use a peacock collar of l krenace. I get it at the needle point shop. It looks like peacock but the panfish don't eat it so fast Good health for you and your's Dave Hughes 🎣🤠
This is great! It's basically a bead-out-front Holy Grail sans flash. Because of you and your videos, beginning early this year I started tying experimental variants I thought would work well in the VA and MD small streams. This fly pattern is essentially one of the variants I've been fishing all year to much success (albeit in different colors, collars/hot spots and hackle feathers). Now if we'd only get some serious rain...
Outstanding to hear! Thanks for this great comment. Hearing stories like these is what keeps me at the bench late at night when I should be in bed. As for rain around here... maybe this weekend will help!
Good Morning Sir Matt, WOW I'm really liking the feathers so cool. I'm wondering what they would look like on a Bucktail Deceiver. I have been tying a lot of big Predator flies as of late, a lot of warm waters over here for bass, walleye, crappie, and white bass. so I decided to order some. Thanks for the hookup, and have an amazing weekend. Maybe someday in the future I'll be able to catch one of those nice looking Browns that you caught last weekend. Thank you Sir.
Haha, thanks Edward! I wouldn't mind catching some of those big bass you have in Texas. As for using emu on big Deceiver type flies, go for it! I never really tie anything that big, but do some experimenting and see what you get. That's what's so fun with tying. :-)
Thats a pretty nifty trick with the wire, im gonna tie a few of thses just to try it out! Well... that and to have a few more flies for the smokies next week
I hear you brother! Funny you mentioned a tux. My wife just signed us up for two black-tie affairs this year. A Navy birthday ball in DC, and a New Year's Eve party. Now I have to go buy one. Maybe I'll wear it in a video someday!
Thanks for the tip on the wire. I'm definitely going to be doing that from now on. I would love to know how the emu works out. Please keep us posted This looks similar to a fly that I tie. I use uv tan ice dub Thanks for the video Matt and hope you have a great weekend
Hi Matt. I’m going to tie some of these for my next outing in two weeks. It will be late fall and shouldn’t be much in the way of surface bugs. I’ll let you know how it does. Need more ☕️. Take care.
Looks great and I’m heading to the vise shortly and tying up some color variations for Tuesday morning stream outing. Do you think a little warm water soak prior to tying may help with the emu breaking like a lite bath does with peacock?
Nice bug Matt. If that's Hareline I remember they came out with a line of natural dubbings. Is that box all 🐫 camel? Did you walk a mile for it?😂. All kidding aside, nice looking bug. Have a good one!
Hahaha! The box does say it's a camel dubbing "blend." I'm just not sure what it might have been blended with. Something natural for sure- I'd guess either rabbit or wool. And I'm pretty sure it was dyed after it was blended. But still, it's kind of cool stuff. :-)
Hahaha! Yes, it's a requirement to wear a suit and tie. :-) I'm kidding. I usually record my tying whenever I can, but I almost always film the intros right after work. And it's a nod to our forefathers who used to wear their coats and ties every day.
New name? Emu Camel Caddis. Good tip on the wire fold. But … Ugly bird? Really? As a friend I promise that I won’t tell the first emu you adopt for your farm. Any bird that can look you in the eye & has nifty feathers deserves respect. =}. Btw, the fly looks pretty good.
You know Bob, I've been thinking more and more about that video. Emus just might not be a bad addition to my farm. I've always planned on some peafowl, but I've also heard they can be loud, territorial, and downright mean. Hmmm... something to think about for when we move out there in a few years. Rabbits are a definite. I love my bunnies. Chickens, of course. But for the eggs, not feathers. Goats are still a maybe. Emus... I could see myself learning to love them. :-)
It looks like an inverted Holy Grail. Maybe it can be the Unholy Grail due to the earth tones and having one shiny component and long hackle instead of the Holy Grail’s flash collar. But thank you for the video! Tight lines from your Adirondack friends ! 🪰🎣
Great comment my friends! Speaking of the Adirondacks... I just did a review of Mike Valla's latest book. It's got a great section on the Adirondacks. Check it out if you haven't yet. amzn.to/3ZuTrJa
Love caddis pupa variations. Easy to tie, endless variations and they're always effective in my experience. Thanks
Matt, this is long overdue, but i wanted to thank you for this great fly pattern. I tied some for our fall trips to the Iowa Driftless region and it was a trout magnet! Not difficult to tie and a definite fish catcher, it will have a regular place in my box. Thank You!
Another J Stockard "Fly of the Month"! Congrats!
Thanks Garrett! I haven't seen their email yet. I'll have to go look for it now. Thanks for letting me know!
Folded wire is a great new tip for me. Many thanks Matt.
I'm glad I could help Warren! Hope you had a great weekend my friend. :-)
Love how the Emu flares out. Cool nymph. Have a great weekend. Thx Matt.
Appreciate it Clyde! Hope you had a great weekend my friend. :-)
I like it Matt! The peacock is the magic to this fly. Have a great weekend.
It absolutely is Jim! Peacock is magical in about everything. :-)
Nice fly and an easy tie. Another winner! Thank you, Matt.
Appreciate it Tom! Hope you had a great weekend my friend. :-)
The Emuculate Caddis 😁 looks great.
Haha! Thanks for the note my friend. :-)
Nice looking fly! Also impressed with the jacket & tie.
Well thank you my friend! It's kind of my nod to the tiers of old who used to sit around at their benches in their coats and ties. (Plus I usually film my intros right after work so it's no extra effort to keep my fancy clothes on. :-) )
Nice job Matt, and great pronunciation with the Emu.
Haha! It took a couple of videos for me to get the pronunciation right. But I'm teachable. :-)
I really like this nymph awesome job Matt
Appreciate it! Hope you had a great weekend my friend. :-)
Hi Matt , thanks for another great video. Love that tip on bending the wire wrap 👍
You bet John! Hope you had a great weekend my friend. :-)
Morning Matt. Nice fly. Like the legs on it.
Appreciate it Nich! Hope you had a great weekend my friend. :-)
Nice looking fly, can't never go wrong with a caddis pupa. Have an awesome weekend, and thanks for sharing.
Appreciate it Layton! No fishing here this weekend but a nice relaxing one nonetheless. :-)
Thanks Matt. I'll have to give that one a try.
Appreciate it Mark! Hope you had a great weekend my friend. :-)
Nicely Tie, Thanks Matt for sharing, Great looking nymph, interesting selection of materials. Well Done my friend.
Well thank you Lee! Hope you had a great weekend my friend. :-)
Can't wait to tie this fly. I do a lot of fishing in the fall. Thanks for all you do, Matt.
You bet Howard! Hope you had a great weekend my friend. :-)
Nice job Matt and I like how you always keep your flies simple. Thanks for the video!
You know it David! Hope you had a great weekend my friend. :-)
Hey Matt, nice and every time I see an airstream I think of y’all 😉
I do too Jim! I'm starting to notice them more and more these days. And then I notice how tiny ours is. But honestly, I wouldn't want to be towing anything much bigger just yet. I need more practice with this little guy. :-)
Great looking pattern ! Mega Thx !!
Appreciate it! Hope you had a great weekend my friend. :-)
This fly looks as if it would be a killer on many waters. Thanks, Matt.
Appreciate it Jim! Hope you had a great weekend my friend. :-)
Nice fly Matt. I like the look of the Emu. Keep the good stuff coming buddy.
Appreciate it Dave! Hope you had a great weekend my friend. :-)
Thanks Matt. I’ve begun to get serious about adding to my box for the fall trips I have planned. This will be a great addition to my fly box.
Outstanding to hear! Hope you had a great weekend my friend. :-)
Thanks Matt!
Appreciate it! Hope you had a great weekend my friend. :-)
Nice fly Matt!! I’m going to be tying this one up for sure!!
Awesome to hear Barbara! Have fun with it. :-)
Tks matt looks like a winner to me 😊
Appreciate it Burt! Are you heading out to the show in NJ in November? I'm hoping to.
Tom, I have never tied with Emu feathers before, but I think they will have a lot of movement in the water, thank you,
MSG Leum
Great now I need to get me some Emu... lol 😆
Hahaha! And camel too my brother! But I envision you starting to tie more big monster streamers for the water down there in Florida. Not these tiny nymphs for little trout up in NY. :-)

Oh man, heading to the GSM?? I'm jealous! Let me know how you do. Send pics if you get anything good. :-)
matt@savageflies.com
Honestly, I think that looks better than Partridge. I'm going to tie some up. Thanks for the suggestion
Well thank you Darrell! I appreciate the note my friend. :-)
Very spiffy outfit for tying!, i usually tie in a tux!
I hear you brother! Funny you mentioned a tux. My wife just signed us up for two black-tie affairs this year. A Navy birthday ball in DC, and a New Year's Eve party. Now I have to go buy one. Maybe I'll wear it in a video someday!
I look forward to your videos, always informative and highly entertaining.@@SavageFlies
Thanks for the tip on the wire. I'm definitely going to be doing that from now on. I would love to know how the emu works out. Please keep us posted
This looks similar to a fly that I tie. I use uv tan ice dub
Thanks for the video Matt and hope you have a great weekend
Cool to hear Dave! I'll bet using an ice dub, you could skip the thorax and just keep the hole body semi-flashy. I like the idea of that!
I like awesome possum and for spiker dubbing I'll use squirrel.
Nice! I just bought a container of Awesome 'Possum this weekend. Can't wait to give it a try. :-)
Hi Matt. I’m going to tie some of these for my next outing in two weeks. It will be late fall and shouldn’t be much in the way of surface bugs. I’ll let you know how it does. Need more ☕️. Take care.
Definitely John! I want to hear all about your trip. Especially if you can get some pictures of nice fish! :-)
@@SavageFlies Hey I’ll do my best but it’s getting the fish to do their part that can be problematic.
Looks great and I’m heading to the vise shortly and tying up some color variations for Tuesday morning stream outing. Do you think a little warm water soak prior to tying may help with the emu breaking like a lite bath does with peacock?
That's a pretty good idea and it couldn't hurt. It'll certainly make them less brittle but they still won't be too strong. But it might work!
Nice bug Matt. If that's Hareline I remember they came out with a line of natural dubbings. Is that box all 🐫 camel? Did you walk a mile for it?😂. All kidding aside, nice looking bug. Have a good one!
