Totally loved it Doddy, I was there at the birth of the flex-Stem, Suspension forks etc etc, near 20 years of mountain biking back then, 17 year off them due to motorcycles, now back peddling, and loving mountain biking all over again, On a Giant Stance, E-+2, aged 60 .

Fantastic Doddy great trip, down memory lane, what a amazing time mountain biking was back in the late 80s an 90s. Unfortunately I do not have any of my old retro bikes and parts as they were always sold to fund the next bike.

Awesome stuff Doddy, the era I grew up with with bikes! I worked with Jez at a bike shop in the North East (Bike Scene) for work experience, he was nuts, remember him getting a telling off from the shop owners for doing Switzerland squeakers in the workshop on a brand new customer bikes 😅
It just shows the UK took to mountain biking and developed the sport in our own way. It's great to see a pioneer off road bike builder get the recognition in the 3rd place. What year does the retro category go up to?
Yep, but also there were similar things happening in Canada and Australia at the same time, it's just not been documented. It's something I want to do. For the retro category as a whole, it seems up to late 90's really
That Highpath is brilliant. Geoff Apps is an overlooked legend. His website is a brilliant insite to off road UK riding with, you know , mud. Did you see any 531 bikes like my Eagle or my old Bromwich Cyclone?
Hey Doddy --- this vid is amazing, LOVED every second of it. I'm 46 and lived down the road from the Malverns so went ro maybe 7 in a row up to 98, I think that was the last year until it recently re-started. I collected MBUK from it's inception until 1998 so seeing all these mags brings back amazing memories! ... the bikes are all those I grew up with. I've moved away from Worcestershire now and miss the Malverns so much --- this vid is exceptional, I'm so happy to have stumbled upon your channel. I owned a Kona Lava Dome, GT LTS 1000, Orange 222, Intense Tracer VP .... I don't ride as much as I should --- that PACE Copper bike is insane ... Always loved the Klein paintworks and Tomac's MAVIC disc wheel! I've got a few old Malverns VHS vids ... wish I kept my race number from racing the main XC race in 93 or 94 ... it was a green plate, maybe 7-Up sponsored ?>!>!?!?

Great video and fun to see some of the bikes we didn't have in the States back then. The Yeti bikes will always be some of my faves. I have an early Tom Ritchey that was custom made by the man himself for my father. It's like a family heirloom! Cheers!
Really enjoyed this video. Pure nostalgia. Never mind all the amazing bikes, even little things like seeing a pair of old Deore DX thumb shifters that I used to have (indexed!) gave me the warm and fuzzies.
Great video Doddy. I think the idea of walking past the judges is a great idea, with so many bikes there it's hard to see some of them when they are squashed in next to something else. I think categories is a good idea, obviously the amount of catagories could go on for ever so might be worth making it simple like Rigid, hard tail and full suspension. There could possibly be a prize in each category of £300 for first, £200 for second and £100 for third that way the total prize fund would only be £50 more than the current prize fund.
I loved watching that step back in time. As a long time bike pro I was able to acquire some of Tomac's gunmetal blue Sun Rims Singlewides. My modern bikes just survived a round of upgrades so now I'm ready for a retro build. Tomac rims will be built into a Kona Ti Score Out-of-Bounds hardtail with an OG Marzocchi Mr. T, (Double Triple Clamp/Orange) and a mostly period build. I'm ready for a retro bike show but none around me. 👍🏻
Great to see. I did the Malvern classic in '89 or was it '88? Too long ago. I had a Yeti FRO (1991) yes with the one piece rear end....should've kept it. Good days of early mountain biking
@doddymtbtech Echoing the comments here, that was a brilliant video, great energy that we all feel the same about. A real trip down memory lane of peak MTB around '90-95. Hopefully get to the Malverns Classic one day, missed it in the 90s when I was racing. Still running the same bike though, my '94 Kona Explosif (the Tange Prestige Ultimate Ultrastrong with the ribbed down tube).
Just built a 1998 explosif for my son as his first full sized MTB. My wife is still riding her Ritchey Nitanium Rockhopper and I’m on a ‘96 DeKerf - long live 90s bikes :)
In my town back then we had a shop called No Sweat that later on sold hiking gear skiing gear only, but started off with Trek & Marin up stairs. I would go in after school and when i left school in 92 and look at those bikes, then down the high street was the Halfords with the Carrera and Saracen bikes that people would have for school.

I had a pair of those MC Suspenders forks. I got them cheap in mid 90s. The top caps were about 2" in diameter but you had to try and unscrew them with a tiny 6mm Allen socket in the middle of them. Aluminium cap - metal Allen key - instant rounding off!
@@Shawn-in-da-Canyon They were old MK1 versions I think and I got them second hand. The top cap threads were very stiff so the small Allen socket wasn't sufficient to turn them without damage.

Good stuff, love racing my Kili [mid 90s] . Couldn't afford this stuff back in the day so crashed around on a Karakoram. A C16, various monsterous Raleigh, Peugeot etc. Finished with a M1000 but only raced it a couple of times. Back racing on this Kili and doing OK, lots of fun but pretty physical.
Very sad to see that Geoff Apps has died. My wife Sue Darlow was a close friend of his (she did the photography for his cycle maintenance book) and we spent a week at his converted church on the Scottish border in '92. Really a brilliant designer with a unique vision of what an offroad bike could be.
Thanks Doddy, a great overview as i Unfortunately missed the event again this year. I feel the mountain cycle could be a great retro eBike conversion with space in the frame for an internal battery. A Raleigh chopper could also be a great potential for eBike conversion with the under seat rack to support the battery, before people scream Chopper sacrilege i was thinking of using a mk3 frame, hub drive rear wheel with cassette and rear mech and a mk2 seat? On the theme of retro 26" wheels my first want was a Raleigh Bomber as a teenager in the eighties, but i actually got a Halfords X16 (i think was the model) one xmas. Which was similar to the Bomber with 26" wheels 3speed sturmy archer, black frame but with red tires with tan walls and read seat. Would love to see either of these at the show and shine next year.
The Brave Warrior is one of my favorite retro bikes. I had two of them back in the day. Still have a frame and matching rigid fork hanging in the garage. Did you know that the chain stays were fork blades?
Amazing bikes! It's interesting to me as in mostly flat East Yorkshire very few people had great mountain bikes. Some had expensive mtb bikes, but set up generally for vanity and road use. Those of us going off road were mostly on low end bikes. So I wonder if collectors presenting at retro shows like the Malverns are still coming from geographic areas that required better bikes.
@21:30 Hey Doddy i was sponsored by Nokian Tyres when racing under RDC Racing in the UK DH Scene in the late 90s/2000s. Had the snow spike tyres, wet weathers in a pale blue rubber and remember the Gazzalodi 3inch i think it was called ?! Good times back then, On my Foes Slammer , Sick !
I miss your content in GMBN so glad to see you again. Many will still discover were is your channel ... I know a pace 26" in my size ready to be sold, with a RST USA etc in good condition, it was offer to me by a friend that didn´t use too much, he owned a shop in the 80s-90s and have some cool stuff but ... I have too many bicycles. The only I would buy perhaps it is a Klein adroit or attitude etc but has many problems if you want to use I i like ride bicycles. Cool stuff.

normally back to the past I love retro MTB aka ATB this are the best bikes for me you can do whatever you want with them and frame clearance does not limit you
Those Nokian tyres were made by Nokian Tyres in the Lieksa factory. Now the bicycle tyres are Suomi Tyres (owned by DMack) and some models are still the same from the 90s, but also new models. I had Gazza Extremes as winter tyres back in 2000.
I had a Kili Pro Elite and what a bike it was. Unfortunately it was stolen from a flat ten years ago, otherwise I’d still have it. That powder paint/coating was bombproof. I’m still a hard tail fan and love my new Orbea Alma carbon machine.
Love all the bikes ,huge fan of retro mtbs. Missing my old Parkpre pro elite watching this video. I sended your buddy Anna some pictures of it last year hoped you wanted to see it too. Sadly i had to sell it. Btw, the Kona humuhumu... ,Kona made a titanium version of that, it would be fun to know how many of these was made.
Had no idea this was a thing. I put another 25 miles on my 98 Santa Cruz Bullit yesterday. I had a set of those Spin wheels in the late 90’s as a 240lbs guy they were terrible for me; I could feel each spoke as I rode along on flat ground.
Determining the "best" bike is so subjective because everyone has a different idea. I prefer to see old bikes with signs of use, replaced parts etc because to me it's a bike that has given a lot of joy to someone (or few people).
I lived by Greenham Common when the base was active with cruise missiles. We had 2 USAF soldiers join our club and from this, I bought a Mongoose John Tomac signature model MTB. The lightest bike at the time it was made from Tange Prestige, had road bike geometry, and rode brilliantly. Unfortunately, the lightness led to its downfall, and the frame broke after a few years. Many happy memories though.
our pimp OG Doddzy never fails to provide his viewing audience with the best bike porn out there... I am spent! special mention to the Kona Humu Humu Nuku Nuku Apua'a, I still own a '96 humu that I used throughout my 15 yrs as a bike messenger and I read in MBA mag in '98 when the Stab was released to the public that the team riders were given a different two tone flame paint job
Incredible bikes,i was there right at the start,I tested the first formula one carbon bike at leith hill in surrey, met Caroline Alexandra ,john Stevenson ,dave hemming and Sophie Brooks at boxhill.I'm still cycling more than ever at 55.Is it the meaning of life??
You are dead right about those Zolatone Marins. You might have seen the 91 Team Marin on my channel, which is the only one I’ve ever seen and my current all-time favourite bike. Also, I’ve never seen that Browning electronic transmission in real life, although I do have the 88 Specialized catalogue in which it’s specced on the Stumpjumper. I cherished that catalogue but never got near any of the bikes. Wonder if anyone ever actually got an 88 Stumpjumper with that system on it, or if the catalogue spec was a promise they couldn’t keep? You’ve intrigued me on that one.
When you come some day to the Netherlands then you should at least visit the Mountainbike Museum in Arnhem to see many many old mountainbikes. Have a view on their website to get a glimpse of their collection.

Keep digressing doddy such a deep knowledge of the early uk MTB scene.. you pull out a name and it takes me right back
Awesome. Every year I say I am going to take my Restored Cove Stiffee fr back to there , And every year I forget..
You need to come to California… the BIRTH of it all! Lol
THANKS !
XTR, XT Deore, Triple So Reliable.
Great stuff Doddy!
Now I miss my Pace even more 🥲
Very sad to see that Geoff Apps has died. My wife Sue Darlow was a close friend of his (she did the photography for his cycle maintenance book) and we spent a week at his converted church on the Scottish border in '92. Really a brilliant designer with a unique vision of what an offroad bike could be.
Hi Rob, I was a longtime friend of Geoff and though I never met Sue, she took some wonderful photos of Geoff and his early bikes.
Great fact! Thank you!
THIS WAS THE BEST BIKE SHOW , this needs to be the STANDARD , it make u dream
Amazing bikes! It's interesting to me as in mostly flat East Yorkshire very few people had great mountain bikes. Some had expensive mtb bikes, but set up generally for vanity and road use. Those of us going off road were mostly on low end bikes. So I wonder if collectors presenting at retro shows like the Malverns are still coming from geographic areas that required better bikes.
We like "digress"
Cool stuff.
normally back to the past
I love retro MTB aka ATB this are the best bikes for me you can do whatever you want with them and frame clearance does not limit you
Wish you showed more of that Klien! I salivated over those back in the day
Quality Dodd 🤙🤙
Great video 👍😄👍
Those Nokian tyres were made by Nokian Tyres in the Lieksa factory. Now the bicycle tyres are Suomi Tyres (owned by DMack) and some models are still the same from the 90s, but also new models. I had Gazza Extremes as winter tyres back in 2000.
I had a Kili Pro Elite and what a bike it was. Unfortunately it was stolen from a flat ten years ago, otherwise I’d still have it. That powder paint/coating was bombproof. I’m still a hard tail fan and love my new Orbea Alma carbon machine.
Mate, I fancy a Mint Sauce Tattoo too 😆😅
That San An ... ♥️👌
definitely categories, makes you wonder were they just throwing darts back in the day or was there some science to it
Love all the bikes ,huge fan of retro mtbs.
Nice weird mind .....do more of this👍😃
Had no idea this was a thing.
No Klein Adroit? I still have my '92 frame in Mardi Gras paint hanging in my bedroom
I can't believe Doddy walked past a K bike 🤷. Klein bikes always draw my eye. The colour ways are always a bit special 🙂
It’s been on my list for sometime. Maybe this winter I’ll get the chance, will see!!
@@DoddyMTBtech give me a ping as I live in Arnhem so we can meet and maybe do some mountainbiking together.
I’ve started watching this too late on a Saturday night. Bad move, is eBay still open?! 😝 Superb machines. Vintage MTB is blowing up.
офигенные велы. у нас такое и не снилось
