1) Fedders AUP05F2K 5,400 BTU
2) Amana 5P2MY 5,000 BTU
Last year, it seemed as though these units had leaked the charge. I should have known better as that's a very rare occurrence. A re-test this year, allowing more time of operation, reveals both units to be in good working order.
Granted it did seem like it took an excessive amount of time for the head pressure to accumulate. I wonder if a test run in a few days will have the same results, or if the machines will charge up within a more reasonable time.
I suspect this may have something to do with the oil moving through the lines, perhaps as the compressor wears over the years, a good coating of oil becomes required for the roller to make a good seal around the chamber and pump properly. - Наука
Well, It's weird how these units magically decided to come back to life. Your theory may be correct about how the oil in the compressor is getting old and is likely causing the unit to take time to get the oil moving in the compressor before it decides to start pumping its refrigerant. However, I think the Amana unit may still be slightly low on the charge due to it not returning to the compressor cold without its filter. It seems still to be working completely fine though. Glad to see these units back up and working and hopefully one of these units will see themselves installed once again here soon.
I don't think there's anything wrong with it. The air flow increases dramatically on most units when the covers are removed. The machines are not intended to run that way, so proper operation under those conditions should not be expected.

Watching this makes me wonder about that GE, 8,000 BTU unit under your porch.
Those GREE made units take almost 20 minutes to build head pressure with the R410.
That's a valid consideration, perhaps I will retest it. I believe it has a Quingan compressor or whatever it is.
I had a Fedders like this but white, also in my kitchen. Mine was a 7,500btu. worked great until one day it didn't. It would cool for an hour and then slowly start icing up. I got annoyed with it and stopped using it. I always chalked it down to it likely having a restriction in the refrigeration system.
That's a possibility.
I had a feeling that this would be the case, especially with the Amana. I have the same one and it does the exact same thing. Nice to see they both still work.

My thought is maybe there's an intermittent restriction in the metering device.
It seems to be consistently working properly after some time, I don't think there's anything wrong with it.
I've seen R22 and R410A (by far the worst) units all take 10+ minutes. It's also not entirely consistent. I have an excellent newer Midea R32 unit that took around 7-8 minutes its first run a few years ago to blow cold, but interestingly this year it was only like 2-3 minutes before it started getting cold. It was always stored the same way. However, I distinctively remember R22 units taking longer and longer every new season, up to 10-12 minutes when over a decade or two old. But after the first operation, if they didn't have any leaks they would just work as normal. Probably is the oil.
I have noticed the charge up time is far less after the initial run in the spring. It really does lead to the oil.
