My 6 year old, who is a fan, said the same to me when she wanted me to show her Pavement on guitar. I took her guitar and told her I needed to tune it first and she said, “well, Pavement plays out of tune sometimes”. 😂
@Earendil's Star exactly. He has so much personality in his playing, lyrics, delivery etc. He has his own sound, style and his playing is really fun. He is just as great live as he is in the studio. It's everything you want to be as a player. Technical prowess only goes so far, if you don't have personality behind it its robot music.
It's quite an achievement to have been making (great) music and playing guitar for so long and be so unique. His style is melodic and melodies are timeless. Most of it played on his 70s strat I believe?
I've seen pavement in 1992 (i do have the tape) and they blew sonic youth away.. great playing, yes. really liked your lesson on nick cave alike dramatic Duane Denison playing
Thanks! It's coming together - you'll see the living room next week :-) I shot in my office for this one because I was literally surrounded by boxes. I will miss the abundant natural light of the apartment, but this house has VIBES. Just gotta learn how to use my lighting rig to capture it!

Not necessarily the right video for this general comment but I really appreciate how your titles aren’t clickbait-y. RUclipsrs say they have to do that so ppl will watch but my man your stuff is amazing and I always watch. Keep being you 🤟
Thanks for noticing! I'm always tempted to see what would happen if I titles vids like: "DOES PAVEMENT SUCK?" or "WHAT YOU'RE DOING WRONG WITH GUITAR" Just to see what would happen. But I can't do it. I just can't.

Awesome! Thank you. Any chance you could do Yo La Tengo's "Can't Forget" (especially the intro/solo) and maybe talk about transcribing/figuring out solos?
Thank you for focusing on how weird that note sounds, (5:25), when I'm practicing I doubt myself a lot, so it's great having reassurance, I didn't do that wrong!!! it's just like that!
Glad that the plants are still there, they add to the chilled atmosphere.... Could do please explain what you meant by pentatonic but not pentatonic chords, as always many thanks 👍👍
man, i love pavement so much! thanks for the video, Eric! i will try this lesson as soon as tomorrow! P.s: i think you might really enjoy Grounded and Spit on a Stranger. Pavement has such great songs!

Great group and great guitarist, it’s a shame that most of the original arrangements require alternate tunings that force you to change to thicker strings and even do a whole new setup to play them, as happens with Sonic Youth. This arrangement is great and allows us to play it in standard so thank you. I just bought a J Mascis Squier Jazzmaster and this will probably be the first song I will learn on it!
@@EricHaugenGuitar right?? I wasn’t planning on buying one at the moment, but one popped up near me for a very decent price, and knowing they stopped making these (and all the good reviews they have online) I had to do it. So far, it’s quite good, my only concern it’s the pickup switch, which feels a little flimsy, but it plays great. It’s a little bit of a downgrade from my mexican strat but I feel like it will be good for me. Most of the groups I listen to use jazzmasters and I think this will inspire me to play more!
Hey man, love your stuff! Could you do a video on Marc Ribot on Make it Rain? I can’t find any good resources for it online. Thanks for all the great content!

Congrats on the new place. Looks nice! And this was a great feel good choice of a song. That odd g / d sharp 5 thing looks a little like the intro to today by smashing pumpkins. Might of course be total coincidence but then maybe not…
If you had to pick one small tube amp for use in a small space what would it be? I assume you'd recommend a 5 watt paired with a Weber Mini Mass? Which 5 watter?
Not actually! I mentioned this in my attenuator vid: ALL 5 WATT AMPS HUM, AND ARE REALLY LOUD If you really want a quiet amp, go with something that has 2 power tubes. Since I'd recommend an attenuator anyway - something like a princeton reverb would be ideal!
Hope that’s a working fireplace with fuel prices going up. Be sure it’s clean and safe before using it though. Glad you mentioned the sharp 5, thought you were out of tune! Guess my ear training is working. Looks like you have a comfortable space to create. Thanks for posting. Can you make pizza in a fireplace?
4:52 what is there to not get? that's such a tasty progression, like something from a 20's crooner tune but implying it with the lead gives the whole thing some extra sauce, that particular line is the 1 thing keeping me from fully dismissing Pavement as mere Fall copyists
This has a California-Nights-by-Wilco groove to it. I really love listening to this Eric. Thanks for posting it. I love the new space. Then again if you were playing in a box car it would be a great space! Kevin O'Rourke
“It doesn’t matter b/c it’s Pavement” 😂 bang on, Eric! 🎯 great video, as always!

Stephen Malkmus, criminally underrated guitarist.

Sure that's not a Spiral Stairs part?
I saw him with the Jicks. I could tell within 5 seconds of him playing that Malk is a terrific guitarist.
@Earendil's Star he also played a Gibson Les Paul and a Travis Bean (TB10000S I think) in Pavement.
One of the best bands of the 90s. You always know what to post

You're the coolest guitar instructor on YT.
Thanks man!
Fantastic looking guitar.
Very good performance 👏

Ah, lovely. This song takes me back to carefree days of youth.
'Don't Worry, we're in no hurry.....
Lovely arrangement...
More Pavement/Malkmus please!
Great arrangement of one of my favorite songs, thanks! Going to see those guys next month again after 25yrs, so excited! :)

Thanks, I just learned this tune on my own a few months ago. Now I get to really make it sound great. Thank you sensei.
It is cool how he puts that nasty lick in there and comes right back into something normally musical and sets it right back into place.
Yesssss more pavement please!
Ooooo! I'm going to learn this! Thanks Eric!
Thank you, Eric! 🙏

love that Bird. I have an Epiphone one myself in a cool drab green olive color. I don't play it nearly as much as I should
Practicing now to achieve this level of smooth. 👏🏼 Skronk is present!
Congrats on the new place. It looks lovely :)

great choice and great lesson, eric. this pavement song and shady lane are really fun to play.
Ooooh there's a good idea for another lesson!
Congrats on the New house and ty for the pavement vid. Would love to see you tackle something with their wacky DADABE tuning they use.
seeing pavement in october, excited yuno
How do you record drum parts for your vids?
I use Toontrack EZ drummer - it costs around $150 as an add-on plugin for your DAW but it's SO WORTH IT!

Never heard this tune before but it almost says range life the way you play it😀
Glad that the plants are still there, they add to the chilled atmosphere....
Could do please explain what you meant by pentatonic but not pentatonic chords, as always many thanks 👍👍
It's kinda like: with a major key progression, you'd expect the melody to be major key, not simple pentatonic. That's all I meant!

Your guitar is absolutely gorgeous
I honestly believe that you could do for Skronk what George Thorogood did for roots rock if you wanted to.
Really cool man❤
such a beautiful sound, really love how you play this, what is the guitar your using?
oh i just saw info underneath,
Eric would you recommend this guitar?, it would be my second electric as im at beginner level but i just just love that sound
All we need now is Jayhawks Blue and we are all happy.
Great lesson choice! Got tickets for Washington DC show in October. If I learn it maybe they will let me sit in for this song?🤷♂️
