Humbleness, detail, well explained and polite. This guy nailed this tutorial without a question!
People who make youtube tutorials are saints.
People who make youtube tutorials on craftsmanship are holy.
Aren’t saints also holy?

St. Joseph the Carpenter pray for us!
I agree with you
“I’m filming down here”
“Well I’m cooking up here”
😂 love it
I’ve only ever had a couple of childhood attempts at making bows, this makes me want to have a proper go . Brilliant stuff
Exactly what I said man
Ha same here lol
Good luck!!
Wow thanks, you're the only one who show what to look at the wood before making a bow and also showing some tips.
Thanks so much. I’ll keep making these.
not true lots of videos and guide cover that.
One of the best videos I've seen on bow making. Watching people make them with 50k worth of tools is just discouraging. I feel like I can actually do this now. Thanks for the inspiration.
You are most welcome! Good luck!
Most thorough, systematic and doable bow making video yet. Great job thanks for making. I will have to try this out on my renegade piece of Osage I've been dragging around with me for years now.
Osage Orange! I want to try that next. Any advice?
I have been making bows for a few years and I don't dare to spend money on Osage Orange, tricky wood to work with.
Hey but Osage is really forgiving of error at least in my line of work it's just difficult out here in Missouri do go find a good stave nowadays
And a free recipe to a yummy pumpkin soup via the one of us that thought to ask! Best you tube vid ever!
Thanks!!
you da MVP chris, all this tutorials (even you) use so many fancy tools, but it's great to see that someone has the balls to do it the old way.
Thanks. I felt I needed to get back to the basics.
Thank you for keeping the focus on the actual "how to" when making a bow. Leaving the tool focus out of it. I'm encouraged to go out and try to make some bows for my kids this summer. Thank you and I wish you all the best!
Glad you found it helpful.
How was the soup???
+WillEyedOney Delicious!!
Recipe?
2 tbl butter, 1 cup chopped onion, 2 lg cloves garlic finely chopped, 1-1/2 tsp curry powder, 1/2 tsp salt, 1/4 tsp ground white pepper, 3 cups chicken broth, 1-3/4 cp (15oz can) Libby's Solid Pack Pumpkin, 1-11/2 cups (12 fl oz can) evaporated milk.
- Melt butter + onion/garlic 2-3 minutes. Stir in curry, salt, pepper for 1 minute. Add broth & pumpkin and bring to boil. Stir in evaporated milk - blend with skimmer or immersion (hand) blender. Good luck.
U are awesome loved the zoom u gave to it beautiful interesting fun detail
i dont even have any of these tools i just use stone tools to make my bows and arrows
This is easily one of the best craftsmanship tutorials I've seen. Simple and concise, doesn't waste viewer's time, all the details are well covered + it includes some great tips and nonintrusive humor. Outstanding work!
Thanks so much! Glad you enjoyed it.
I really like how you made this video for novice bowyers. Getting new people interested in the craft is essential. I also liked how you used reclaimed timber. Your hatchet work is impressive! People shouldn't be afraid of a stave with knots though. I have an osage bow that I made when I was 13, it has 6 knots in it. Each knot is in the working part of the limbs. I'm now 26 and it still shoots great. 45 lbs @28". It was 2 lbs heavier the day it was finished, but that's fairly normal. Keep up the good work! Looking forward to another video!
This is one of the best diy vid on bow making ive ever seen. U did a great job from start to finish. Thx, i feel i could make a bow now cuz of it. Thx.
Thanks!
Best use for a tie ever, chop chop
Thanks
THANK YOU for the straight details without crazy music, intros, ads, etc, etc,,,, excellent video.
You are most welcome!
Impressive work Chris! Especially just using a hatchet and file. I really appreciate the thought you put in your videos, nothing else like it on the tube.
Wow. Appreciate the comment.
Oak is a great first bow wood. My first bow was a red oak mollegabet board bow. The draw weight was way lower than I had intended when I started. Remember, it was my first bow. But when I finally found that I REALLY needed to be patient and take my time with tillering, I got it to shoot smooth. It's a fun bow! I backed it with rawhide. I've made 11 bows since (7 of them were gifts...I figured it would give me practice and my friends and family would appreciate the effort).
Anyway, pallet oak may not be optimal, but I still think it's a good heard wood for a first time bowyer!
Love the video!!
Thanks so much!!
Wish I had a place to make bow. Love the video!
It's great that your using hand tools the average person could get without a lot of expense, and your bows come out so nice. I'm working on one now , just because of this video. Thanks..!
Thanks and good luck!
Nice video, Chris.
The bow looks very nice.
Due to the tie pattern, it really looks like snake skin.
I think that takes a lot of time for the Tillern ".
If you do not pay attention, a lot can go wrong or mistakes can happen
Yep. Tillering is very tedious.
I think that "Tillern" is the most important thing in bow making. :-)
Very cool! But don't think you can get legal hunting weight with bows like that.. got to have 40lb draw to take deer.
stony
suomi!
Well made! I love how-to's that provide all the info without a ton of needless fluff.
The first minute hooked me and kept me going!
I had no intention on making a bow, or shooting any arrows. Now all I want to do is handmake a bow out of pallet wood.
Good luck!!! Let me know if u have questions.
I'm in the process of making one, my 2nd...this is a really good video! Great job! -Dred
Glad you enjoyed it. Good luck.
This is a really excellent instructional video for anyone that has the urge to take their bow making to the next level without expensive tools or materials. The amount of thought and time that has clearly been put into the production of the video is exceptional. Well done Chris!
Thanks!
A bow tie would not be a more appropriate accessory for that application?

Sorry could not resist.
Maybe for a pocket crossbow. 😄
I'm thinking about using my Santa Claus tie
Maybe for the handle

I think Mr. andflou is of a lower i.q. than the presenter.
I never would have thought to use a neck tie as a bow backing. Brilliant!
Thanks. It worked great!
This has given me hope that I could one day be a Bowyer.
Good luck!!
I come back here every now and then to watch the bow-making videos. Right now making a bow with my own hands feels like something impossible to me. I think if I watch these videos about a 100 times each, it will give me some confidence. Thanks, Chris!
Thanks! Good luck!!
"wait for the glue to get tacky"
Much like that tie.
Nice!
Best bow making tutorial on RUclips
Thank you!
Bravo!!! Veramente un bel tutorial...spiegato in modo semplice ed efficiente ...complimenti...ottima manualità'.
Grazie mille!
Chris! Make a video where you take someone who has never made a bow and using this method help walk them through making their own. I think it would be helpful as they will try making mistakes that you could quickly correct on video for all of us. Love the tutorial
Thanks. I always worry about putting sharp tools on other people’s hands...
That shots pretty damn good
It sure does!
What a simple explanation to so many questions, ask google! Thanks for making this video, I appreciate it and will hopefully put it to use...
Thanks and good luck!
The bow is only 2 inches shorter than me..awesome.
👍🏻
I have a bo staff that is 10 centimeters taller than me. Unbelievable
I love this man's ingenuity, vibe and overall demeanor. Seems like a genuine kind of person
Well thank you very much!
I like how you made this. I would have appreciated a little closer views of the back of the bow showing how the one continuous fiber looks down the length of the bow. I understand doing it but I would have liked to have seen it. Is it possible to use a froe in the early stages to get to the one ring for the back? How long should the wood be aged or in a crises situation can it be done with green or fire treated wood? Just curious, I’ve never made one but would like to attempt it in the near future. Thanks.
A froe will work. Wood should be dried. I’ve some people fire dry them but I️ do not. Got the feedback on the fibers
Typically people use a drawknife. It's like a froe with more control. People have had a lot of success drying their wood in a 80-90 degree kiln or in a hot attic.
Great video Chris! I'm glad YT suggested it.
Thanks!
Chris. Just a small correction. Wood bows bend towards compression. For example. In a wood diving board- the top is in tension. The bottom is in compression. Similarly the back of the bow is in tension not compression.
Got it.
I believe that is what he said
That's what he said at 2:40 -- unless he edited the video to change what he originally said.
That pumpkin soup looks delicious!
It was!
Congratulations on your daughter craguation
Do you make your own arrows or do you purchase them?
Thanks. I try to make my own but I’m not very good at it.
This is the most practical video on bow making for newbies!!! love it:)
Thanks!
I'd be interested in a video about all and any electric power tools that you own or use at all for anything. I know you use hand tools for your videos and for woodworking, but are there any cases where you use electric tools for anything? For example repairs around the house, working on a vehicle, or on your job. I just though it would make an interesting video and show another side of Chris, the hand tool chopper!
Power tools are just too boring for me :)
Fair enough. If you ever change your mind, I'll watch the video!
No man, chris even Blends his margaritas by hand! Lol
Fantastic video Chris! Whenever I feel as though the internet is becoming a cess pool of negativity I find a video like yours and it encourages me. I absolutely love that you have gifted us all with your knowledge and your time, it re-fills my spirit. I recently retired and need a hobby, I'm going to give this a try. Thanks Again!
Thanks and good luck!
Heeey, good lookin'.
Whaaaaat you got cookin'?
:D
Pumpkin soup is delicious!
That was a sweet tutorial. Can’t believe how lucky you got with the look of that tie.
No doubt!
are you able to tiller while in tension to make sure you get even tension in real time?
I have not tried that. Makes me nervous so close to a bow in tension. If the string slips you can get smacked in the face.
I've tried it and yes it hurts when things slip and smack you in the face! Just take your time. Check it, file it, and check it again! I was making the bow for a foot operated bow lathe about 25 years ago and still have a scar above my eye!
That was my question as well. Thanks for the reply
Yes you can, but it's better to do it when you're closer to your target draw weight. Also, if you do intend on tillering it strung, you should draw it a little in between scrapings so you get rid of the cell memory in the wood fibers otherwise you're not going to see the change.
A pistol grip "quick" clamp over the notch keeps it safely in place (or a C-clamp if quicks are too modern :) ) @@ChopWithChris
Wow. I,m a show me learner and this helos me tremendously as I just ordered my stave for a flat bow and a hickory longbow. I now understand the book better. Nice job
Thanks and good luck!!

I'm new to your channel and I just wanted to say great freakin video. Really. I mean it. I'm a manual kinda guy. I'm very experienced with tools, antique primitive tools tools as well(I own many) so I'm excited to craft a bow to my own liking! You exhibited good control with your tools and never once did I think "this guy is a dope". Then to boot, you taught things from the get go I really never gave consideration to. Tillering being the biggest. Applying a backing is another. Thanks for the inspiration and solid instruction. I'm going to start one soon!
Thanks and good luck!!
Welcome to *the why was this in my recommended show*
Skortana I only liked bc ur profile pic 😂👍
Thank you for a most awesome posting Chris. I love your passion and patience to create a fine piece work from discarded wood. You are a genius.
Well thank you very much!
You most most most welcome. D

Thanks!
See a hundred of these videos, and this one is the best!! Thank you!!
Wow, thanks!
Could you do a couple of practice shots with a bird? Or some other kind of wild animal?
+chevive7 I guess I better practice more then.
what is wrong with you?
Why dont you volunteer as a live target?
Dude be nice and shut up

Thanks for the video. I've been wanting to make a bow for awhile and all the other videos out there are super complicated, the way you explain and the simplicity of how you demonstrate the process makes it seem so much less daunting of an undertaking.
Thanks and good luck.
The soup segment made my day! Thanks Chris!!
And it was delicious!!
This is the best bow making video I’ve seen! Great job!
Well thank you very much!

My son (he's six) thinks you're amazing. Thank you for this channel, you inspire my kids who wouldn't have access to this otherwise.
I am honored. I will try to continue to inspire wherever and whenever I can.
Very nice video . Almost the best and simple way to learn how to do bow .. BIG LIKE
Well thank you very much.
Awesome video, so much patience and talent - perfect tie to use. It does resemble snake skin. I learned a lot, thanks.
You are most welcome.
I'm really digging those axes in the background... especially the fire axes
I love them!
the sound of chopping wood is satisfying..
No doubt!
Sir, for the very limited amount of tools you used, your tie notwithstanding, you created an outstanding bow. A great job on the bow's construction.
Thank you Sir, very much indeed, for your hard work in producing this video.
Oscar
Appreciate your comment. Thanks.
I may try this. Maybe this weekend or next. I would love to actually make something like this just because it would be functional art.
Good luck!
I was skeptical of how the tie would look on the bow, but daaaaamn that looks nice!
Thanks. Looks like snake skin! $2
I will do this just to get rid of my old work ties...thanks you do brilliant work.
Thanks and good luck!
The tie is an inspired choice! and it looks great. Genius :)
Thanks. It turned out really well.
You are a very good teacher and it's a pleasure to watch your work. BTW, you kinda look like John Malkovich.
Thanks!
this was exactly the kind of video i was looking for. Very clear and all the information i needed. Can't wait to get stuck into making a bow! thanks
Thanks and good luck!
Soup looks great. The bow cool too.
Yummy!
Pumpkin soup! Oh, nice bow, too.
Awesome, Chris!
👍🏻
I tried looking online with " What is the best wood to make a bow? " a while ago and didn't get much info. but from you I got 2 woods at least. So far I have gotten more info on making a bow than any other youtuber when it comes to importance of what to look out for. Thank you for your hard work.
You bet. What different types of wood are available to you?
Not sure. I live in an apartment with no car or money to buy wood. If I was out in the woods and wanted to make one knowing what is the best wood, how to identify the wood and such is important. I currently live in WA so it's hard to get to a wooded area without a car. I would have to take a bus 90% of the way then walk the rest. On top of this I like the old style methods of working with your hands over working with machines. Knowing what type of wood for the best tension when making a bow is essential to understanding the bow. If I ever have kids it would be a great learning experience for me and them if we ever end up in a situation where this knowledge is useful. Knowing how to make a bow string/ cables from scratch if you don't have access to a store IE animal tendons is also good to know. I plan to make a bow/ compound bow from complete scratch string and all. If I manage to get everything needed to make one I will most likely post a video about making it. As I am a complete novice it will be a fun learning experience. Leather working, woodworking, metalworking like they used to do without tech is always something I wanted to learn since I was a kid. Back then youtube wasn't a thing lol. Thank you again.
Good luck!
That shield in the back is Rawesome!
Thanks!
NIce video. I've always wanted to make a bow and the way you presented this makes me feel like I am ready. thanks.
Thanks and good luck.
Makes me want to just use an old piece of 2×4 for my first bow! Thanks for the tutorial!!
Same I got an old 4x4 sitting in my backyard
Thanks and good luck.

This is an excellent video. I am a longbow archer in the UK with two English longbows, one of them solid yew made for me in the Mary Rose style. I don't think I've seen another film so packed with accurate information, helpful tips and practical advice; it really is all here. To impart so much information so concisely and so nicely is a rare skill on RUclips. Your explanation and demonstration of tillering was just perfect.
As a novice woodworker (I love my Gransfors Bruk Carving Axe) I don't think this video will be surpassed for showing how to make an effective and workable bow with minimal simple tools. I'll be tuning into more of your films from here on.
(And who knew you could make a bow from oak? And, who makes oak pallets anyway? I'd never heard of that before - it's all softwood in the UK.)
Thanks so much. I once lived in West Byfleet outside London. Wonderful!
I'm so impressed you made this out of junk pallet wood. And more impressed of how well it turned out. And you only used basic tools. Kudos Chris
I am now a sucriber
Thank you and welcome.
Great work ! Thanks for inspiring me, now I'm on my quest to make one,
Great! Good luck!
Great job, Chris. On the bow and the video. You’re a talented craftsman.

Thanks and welcome. I’ll keep making them.
Great bow, I like the knowledge of using the growth rings to the bows advantage, tie, or snake skin looking rap was nice.
