    Chris, WOW, My Dad..... when we lived up at Lake Tahoe , he did Bow and arrow making, he did it just like you did in this video, It brings tears to my eyes, I spent quality time with my Dad making Archery equipment. I remember Deer Hunters come to my dad with orders for arrows with their custom Paint Rings ID, so they knew whose arrow was who"s, he made everything,m Bows, Arrows, Quivers, and Arrow Points out of a thin steel, he would cut to shape and then use a sand paper and wet stone to sharpen it. I Lost my Dad last year, I miss him, but I have these memories, thank you for adding to them, Archery making is a Noble Art . OMG that was my job, Collecting pine pitch, I can smell it now !

      Chop With Chris I think it was Turpin Tine he used on my hands, I remember after a couple of gatherings, he got me a pair of Canvas gloves to wear when I went to collect with my stick & old paint can, He would heat the pitch up on a camp stove, when the pitch got runny like honey he would pour it through a screen to clean it out then it went into a smaller can like a putty can with a sealing tin lid. When he needed it, he would put the little can on a wire stand with a candle below it and it would get liquid in about 5 minutes, he also used hot glue, I remember when it was done dry & cool, he would put a coat of Varnish on it to seal it off. Hand made by an Artisan is always the best.

    Thank you sir. I will be watching your videos over the next few months. We go camping every year as a family totally rustic camping in the woods. Even the wife deals with just a river for a bath for the better part of a week. This year's challenge is make a bow. I was successful in making one before though after I see yours mine just looked like kindling. It was a kid sized bow perfect for my son. I cheated for the wooden arrows and just bought dowels from Walmart. But that year was our year to bring the turkey to thanksgiving. We raised the turkey and I pulled a couple feathers off before butchering and u think super glued them onto the dowel. I didn't know whay else to do so I carved an arrowhead out of wood. I think I made another arrow using a lid from a soup can shaped into an arrowhead.
    Anyway!!! I was proud enough to show the guys at camp way back when and adults draw length overstressed the bow and it snapped. We are all doing it this year on our 24hr bushcraft that goes even further into the woods. I can't wait.

    Chris, At 9:48 ... The way you do it is to put the string in one side, put that side on the floor, grab the string in your left hand, put the bow against your back, with the curve looking away from you, then cross your left leg in the frontal part of the bow to make sure it doesnt move, and grab the unstrung side with your right hand over your right shoulder. Then you bend the bow using your left leg, your butt, your back, and your right hand, while putting the string with your left hand. I know this because im an archery sport practician. Please like so Chris can see.

    Thanks Chris this is about the first vid I've seen where more traditional tools are used in the making, I realise that not many people would have (or even know how to operate) manually powered drills or lathes but its something that would be fairly easy to work around. The main point I am trying to make is that you took the time to show us how it could be made from scratch using simple items you could gather yourself so thanks and come the apocalypse I'm gonna be ready :). Seriously though thanks for your work and effort .

    • @kana22693
      @kana22693 6 лет назад

      You could probably make a bow string out of fishing wire, hemp wick, cotton from clothes (you're gonna have to braid it for extra strength though), leather strips from jackets, linen, animal sinew...etc. Pretty much any material that's strong yet flexible.

    • @bren42069
      @bren42069 6 лет назад

      No it needs to be the opposite of flexible! The bow does all the flexing. It needs to be strong and unyielding. You can buy a spool of waxed dacron thread on Amazon and learn to weave a bow string. You can use hemp or flax etc.

    • @TheJamboian

    You can save a lot of climbing by going through a pine grove and cutting a small blaze about two feet off the ground in a few mature trees. Do it in the winter and when the sap rises in the spring you'll have gobs of pitch. Make the blaze small and it won't permanently injure the tree.

    Great job on the bow. The arrow is the size of a flag pole, but good for demonstrating. Another way of making a shaft is by planing a square blank in a planing jig.

  • @Dominicaislandmon
    @Dominicaislandmon 7 лет назад

    Hints: Look up pine pitch glue sticks and after making them heat both the wood, arrowhead and pitch to adhere it. Next, try coating the entire surface of the shaft for the length of the feathers and they are easy to adhere as well as sealing the shaft. Looks good too. Last is to use a heated knife or piece of metal to singe off the feather to shape..... it acts like burning through plastic and works perfectly.

    Exelent video,... you were describing wood (taking a set) a permanent bend that dose not change the poundage that your drawing,... but the permanent bend dose cost you in feet per second and in arrow cast.
    The minimun cast for a decent bow is 200 yards,........a good bow will cast an arrow much farther.
    Also Your wood can take a set if you use compression wood,.... you want to use tension wood.
    Indians believed that you made a bow using the top side of a limb or a tree trunk where you used the wood from the windy side of the tree,... the tension side,.........or on a hill side you want the up hill side*
    You made mistake's,.... but you adapted and overcame,....... your awesome.
    Awesome tools
    On arrows you can cut with the shaft with the grain and glue in a piece of horn then cut your knocks in or your point.
    If you had a drill press or a router you can make a jig to make any diameter arrows that you want.
    A 2X2 is about half of a 2X4*
    You need a 12 inch 2X2
    You need a 2X2 4 7/8 you drill a 23/64 hole through the center lengthwise mark it top, bottom, left side and right side.
    Then you cut it into 3 blocks about 1 1/2 inch's
    You put the 3 blocks on the 12 inch piece with a 23/64ths dowel rod or arrow shaft through it.
    You glue the first block even the second one 1 1./2 away and the 3rd one on the other end,
    But the 2nd an 3rd blocks should have the front of the hole countersinked.
    After you glue them put screw up from the bottom to hold them better.
    Then take a 9/16 drill bit and drill out the first block.
    Jig complete
    You cut your arrow material into 3/8 X3/8 squares 34 inch's long.
    You find a socket that fits over the 3/8 arrow staves then you attach the socket to a hand drill.
    You put a 1/2 inch mill bit in a router or drillpress and lay your jig with arrow shaft in it down on its side.
    You you run the mill bit up or down till it hits the arrow shaft and clamp everything down.
    You turn the press on,... and you run the arrows through with the hand drill.
    A drill press should be as fast as it go's.
    And that makes arrows quick.

    On the arrow making, take a big horn sheep antler because they are big. Next drill holes from large to small diameter. Whatever size you choose. I would start with the pointing-finger thickness to something smaller than my pinkie-finger. Twist the arrows through each hole. This will compress the wood. Build a small bonfire. Let burn the fire down low, the earth and ash will be hot enough to dry your bow. Stick the bow in the hot earth. Turn it over every 15 minutes. The extra moisture will dissipate. Check by flexing it. It should spring back to original position faster than before. Don't make too dry, it'll crack.

  • @TheQuinian
    @TheQuinian 8 лет назад

    That's awesome, I'd just note that what you keep calling pitch is only sap. Mix equal parts sap, ground charcoal, and pulverized fiber (dry horse turds work really well). The mix has to be "cooked" while mixing it. The end result is a black tar like stuff that dries pretty hard. You can even make a glue stick out of it by getting all the left over on a stick. Just heat it up to use it.

    I love all your old tools. What a great collection. I would think the cross-grain mounting of the arrowhead would help to ensure the arrow doesn't split when the arrowhead makes contact with a target despite how securely its mounted. Over time it might slowly work it's way into a split so I can see how the cross-grain mounting would be the recommended procedure.

    Good job... I sure wouldn't like you to fire at me. That setting of the arrow tip against the grain is to stop it acting like a wedge and splitting the grain due to the energy going back into the arrow on impact... the same as setting a chisel against the grain when putting on a handle. May I offer a wee turning tip please. When you are turning long, thin stuff, cut by pulling the gouge backwards along the wood instead of cutting forwards. Cutting forwards introduces a force that bends the wood due to resistance against the cut. Cutting in reverse negates that force almost completely and prevents flex. Great video, thank you.
    Best Wishes, Brendan.
