Big surprise, I took half the strings off this cheap Rickenbacker Copy AND IT STILL SUCKS!

At least it looks cool on the wall 5 feet away
I replace the nut immediately on all cheap guitars. It's too easy to just drop in a bone nut and groove it to the right depth. makes such a world of difference.
Maybe that's the answer?
If you hate tuning 12-strings so much, and just make Steve do it. :P
Nice playing Ryan! Very tasteful, love the introduction of the beat machine!
I was visiting the home of a buddy who resides in suburban Nashville, has a well-paying job and is a decent guitar player and avid collector. His collection of vintage pieces is enviable. I spied a blond mid-60s Rickenbacker 12-string hanging on the wall, and just had to try it. I can't say that I've ever had a more disappointing experience with a guitar. I found it unplayable. Maybe Bill "spiderfingers" Ruppert could play it, but I found the neck barely wide enough for 6 strings, let alone 12. From what I understand, Rickenbacker widened the neck on subsequent years' models.
For decades the Rickenbacker company vigorously pursued imitators, sending them cease-and-desist letters as soon as the knock-off became known. Unlike the decades of Fender and Gibson knockoffs that they both ignored, before GIbson decided to catch up by going after PRS for the Single Cut as some sort of Les Paul trademark infringement (which the court appropriately dismissed), Rickenbacker *defended* their trademark. And this guitar demonstrates why they did so: when you have a good product you're proud of, bad knockoffs erode confidence in the real thing.
Nothing beats the real deal hence why I worked my tail off to have two of them.
Skill issue
Seems like Harley Benton is still the way to go for a cheap 12-string. Though they have their own issues sometimes. Love the new pointer hand, hope it becomes a staple like the 2 princes jingle.
Im still gonna get one. And if i can't make it play nice, I'll have just bought a great looking piece of Pop Art sculpture for a few hundred quid. Pretty cool.
I guarantee get a new nut for it an it will make a world of difference, i bought a lefthanded les paul 12 string kit an was the same issue, when i finally got the nut cut to the depth rightvon each string the difference was amazing!
I’ve got two 12-string Rick Copy guitars. Yes they needed the strings lowered. However they play and sound great.
If you don’t want yours I’ll take it !!!
Send it to me. I’ll give it a good home. 😊
How about a Q&A with your mannequin
Indeed... We need all the facts 😊
I love my Dean 12 string that I bought from Thomann a few years ago. It sounds amazing especially when I add a compressor to get that 60's jangle.
Thanks for all the effort! I’d be interested to see how you like the Harley Benton 12-string. It looks very Rick-ish & is quite affordable. I also adore Danelectro 12-strings; they’re Super musical, but twice the price of the HB.
I always take those bridge covers off! I know you'll eventually get that thing to play!🤣👍👍
The Revelation RJT-60/12 is a nice Jazzmaster-inspired 12 string that can be had for not much money. Just make sure to ditch the trem because that thing was a waste of time on mine, forget keeping it in tune until you hard-tail it - then it sounds exactly like you'd want a 12-string electric to sound.
@leopoldbluesky Do you have a link or web info for Revelation guitars. I can't find it like I used to be able to. I have 1 very unique Revelation Jazzmaster, phenomenal guitar!
Cool looking stuff from that brand, no US distribution tho 😢
@@gonzoengineering4894 Oh that stinks. They used to have a website and I found mine on eBay in the U.S. maybe 6 yrs ago.The quality is very high, to me it feels like it's M.I.J. quality. Personally it feels triple what I paid 😈
There is also the Squier Paranormal Jazzmaster XII.
@@67goat Yes, they look great as well. Edit: Just checked prices, they seem to be phenomenally good value, less than £390 in the UK right now in Lake Placid Blue - gorgeous!
The problem with tuning 12-strings is intonation; the high and low strings in each pair need to be at different lengths. Think about it-the D (normal 4th) and E (normal 6th) are intonated at different lengths, and yet when you put that 4th as the octave 6th, the bridge saddle is the same for both. As a result they go out of tune when fretted. In fact looking at your guitar at 20:55 the saddles all seem to be at the same length. You can get Tunomatic style bridges with 12 saddles; either that or try filing the saddles to give two contact points.
I have one of the 660 copies that I also pulled the octave strings off of. I’ve also replaced the pickups and all the plastics and put a vibrato on it because I will eventually get it to play well and I love the look of it.
I think I’ll get a Digitech Mosaic pedal so I can get a 12 string sound with any of my guitars! How about trying that?
Check neck for warping. A twist will do weird things to tuning. I got the Fender 12-string Jazzmaster. No issues, but I prefer the the nut neck width a bit wider on a 12.
Maybe it’s time for another guitar case test using a bridge
Friday night freakout jam!
The loop screams for nas style rap part to be laid over it, this was fire
That beat thing is only $40 so why not , just got a Fender rumble LT25 for studio bass decide to play my Westcreek Racer through it man was it fun , you should feature one , a 20 lb effects pedal in one box 31 effects
I'm thinking about getting one of the smaller body Fakenbackers for SLIDE
I enjoy the new beat-box.
I'm sorry to hear about the issues with your guitar there, Ryan.
I bought a 2nd hand lefty Rickenbacker 330/12 from Maccari’s in Denmark Street in the mid 2000’s for £900. It had barely been played. I think they now go from £1600 to £2500 used. It’s a quirky guitar that only really does one thing but nothing else I own does that. And yes, it’s a pain to re-string.
That alabs delay is so good
The JHS oil can delay is damn good too. I have both the Alabs and this.
I have a similar problem with my "Gibson" Baldwin "music education" sg. I've taken it to a luthier and have messed with it myself endlessly, the garbo factor defies all explanation and it refuses to stay in tune. One thing cool about your Rickenfaker is, I loved that gnarly trash can metal sound you got playing Link, if anything at the end of the day you could smash the thing in frustration and put the pickups on some other cheap guitar.
You could put only the skinny 6 on it (higher octave strings), that's a thing people do. I forget what it's called, seen a few channels do it so I actually bought a set to do it on one of my standard 6es. It sounds super sweet, try that.
Nashville tuning
@@60CycleHumcast Right, right. Maybe that could be a good use for it, make it stand out from your other guitars, like a baritone or the Bass VI but in reverse, your high guitar. Might sound like nails on a chalkboard with fuzz (y'know, but in a good way.)
I will be sorely disappointed if this _“guitar”_ doesn’t end up in the 🔥 *fireplace* 🔥this upcoming holiday season! 😂
What's the gold amp to the right of the Princeton? Don't think I've seen that one on your vids before! Either that or you're in the way ;)
You might also want to cut the nut slots a little lower. Generally a rickenbacker 12 string has the low octave strings strung before the high octave strings on the lowest 4 courses
Pro tip: If you cut off the remaining 6 strings, you won't have any issues anymore. 💡👍
Some strings sets that would not stay in tune try a restring first. A couple of people the glarry guitars had trouble until they restringed them! Love you all and have a blessed day!!
It’s already been restringed with good strings.
Glarry II or 2 were loaded with wilckerson strings, tuners and 2 point bridges and it had a bone nut for 10 bucks more that stays in tune with the wilckerson strings. Love you all and have a blessed 😂day!!!😊
Get the nut fixed add locking tuners for fast string changes and put on a set of pyramid or thomastik flatwounds and your tuning issues will most likely disappear.
You need a strap & maybe some Thomastik Flatwound 12 string strings would help
I wish you'd get a real Ric one day soon, but FWIW, that little stylo gadget made for a fun jam using your crippled chickenbacker running it through some crazy shit.
The upside: no one will steal it.
Since you asked, the pickups on the copy are close enough BUT very brittle sounding. It lacks some of the roundness of a typical Ric. It's trashy, messy. If you have use for some brash garage rock sound, it'll be fun for that.
A cheap EQ pedal can balance it is out, boost and cut what you need on it. Compression maybe, but try EQ first.
I find people who hate cheap guitars disappointing, man try to fix it! and repairing a guitar is kinda part of the fun? it gives you a lovely connection with the guitar and it allows you to understand it's quirks when it comes to playing and conversely, learn your own quirks.
Fender Villager V3 acoustic/electric (Fishman pup & tuner) recommended...
Can you record the stylophone in garageband and how do you run it through pedals?
Get a 3.5mm to 1/4” adaptor and you can run it into pedals.
dude, it seems useful. not in an in front kind of way, but in the back of a recording
Time to make it a wall hanger.
What about the Squier 12 String Jazzmaster?
I think you should see how many pieces it turns into if you smash it ;)
Oh oh love is coming to town
You should make it into an intonated 12-string!
Sold me on that drum machine lol
It’s super fun
It has always been my understanding that the tuning on the real ones is finicky because of the short scale length. A well-cut nut and intonation should go a long way. I don't think (just opinion) that will ever be a good six string, I think twelve strings and a good nut and setup may make it at least usable, I don't have it, so I don't know, just a guess.
Sonic Smith of the MC5 had a Rick 12 converted to a 6.
Ryan I feel like you'd enjoy the aesthetic of a Vox 12 string.
I would
@@60CycleHumcast Also it's 100% your fault I got into offset basses. I just ordered a Squier Jaguar.
I have one and its garbage. I got about 3 weeks of frustration before the whole neck came off. I glued it back in and now its just a wallhanger. It looks cool but thats all it has.
Congrats! You finally called spade a spade. Good job. You're WAAAY to easy going on these hilariously nonfunctioning wastes of money.
that beat was awesome
The dhgate ones seem like a way better deal. Or eBay. Just not AliExpress. Nope. Never.🍻
Nice jam with that Stylophone Ryan, even with the toan of that Chickenfaker!
I was just gonna say that sounds like a nut slot issue, its an easy fix
7:05 How about a Fender XII?
You need a Burns Double Six Greenburst in your life my friend
I tell you this !!this guitar has a special sound ❤!!tuning troubles aside!that sound its worthwhile!!
The sexiest guitar alive!
Did you check if the scale is right?
That was my first thought, too. Like the manufacturer didn’t do the scale math correctly and the frets are not the right distance and will never hit the right notes. 😂
At least my ‘63 Rickenbacker 360+12 IS A REAL ONE! And it plays in tune.
ok
Your R tailpiece didn't explode yet? Seriously, that issue is with the later versions with garbage pot metals.
That stylophone is interesting.
Ya know..... I've been watching your videos for a long time, and for some reason JUST subscribed..... Weird. Anyway, I love the afford-a-board series, and I have a suggestion for you. A whole lot of players are going headless/ampless these days, and it would be really cool to see your take on a headless/ampless afford-a-board.
nut and bridge work should get it to perfect
It’s a chikenbacker
You can polish a turd, but your hand will get dirty.
Smash the thing to smithereens at your next gig!
What’s the name of the song at 17:20 ?
Cissy Strut by the Meters
@@dustinfillmore5510 thank you.
Some guy was selling this on marketplace for $500(cad).
GIVE IT TO A WOODCHIPPER!
Chickenbacker laaa! Ta ma de!!!
Smash it!
I just watched the first video and now this one. The one thing I do notice is, and this my opinion, is that you are using so many pedals and effects that it's hard to tell what I'm hearing. Guitar? Pedals? Driving the poo out of the amp? Whether the guitar is really a bad product or not is hard to tell. It sort of seems like a little bias slipped into the evaluation.
What you are hearing is a guitar that plays bad.
If the problem is the frets make it a fretless 😂
9:36 I mean 😂
It's a wide cricket bat lol
Maybe a Harley Benton 12 would work better
Agree! Stick with reputable brands. Ain't nothing worser than Jay Turser (and other such junk)
What, no Two Princetons again? Unsubbed.
The power lights on
Unsubbed @everyone
The Chibenbacker.
I think it’s a lapsteel in disguise.. a bad one, but still a lapsteel …
Give it to Glenn. He‘ll fix it for you. Permanently.
Wanna sell it? With a little more work, it'll make a really nice wall ornament. 😀
Are you local? its not worth the shipping.
@@60CycleHumcast Nope, I'm in Connecticut. I think you're closer to Honolulu than to me. 🍍
Give it to Phil see if he can fix test his skills
Nah man keep the thing if theres space😂 try to work out its kinks, I love fixing even the hopeless specimen
It looks like your issue is you got a cheap knock off… and it needs a set up… you seem to be willing to do it with 6 strings… just pretend you are setting up two 6 strings… your issues are a 12 string takes twice as long to tune, and twice as long to set up :P i have a double neck (12 and 6 strings, so an 18 string) it took me ages to set it up, and after tuning I need a break before I play it… but it comes with the package, i don’t get why you are so angry at it lol enjoy your stuff, keep on wigglin’!
???? How many % better is the West Creek ????
got one..the 381 model and i love it;; maybe you're not on rickenstyle guitars..oh i've changed the pickups
You get what you pay for...IF you're lucky !
You should have read the description. It says Made in China. Put in straight into landfill.
Reverend Airwave 12 .... that is your 12 string solution .... have one .... its Awesome .... even sounds killer with the Fuzz IMP Creature pedal .... I named it The Dirty Dozen 🤘🏼
But it sounds amazing
DOES IT?
@@60CycleHumcast it does! What a rich and textured and at the same time detailed sound
well it feels like crap lol
@@60CycleHumcast No doubt about that.
Rankenbonker
dude - ligher strins
Don't worry your doing good work 4 God and country
Friend has a 12-string Rickenbacher- it’s unplayable
The neck is shockingly narrow and it’s impossible to fret chords properly.
Maybe locking 🔐 tuners ?👉 Thats a royal majestic sound only a boogie wuga guy understands!
I’ll give you $80.00 for the set-up if you give me $20 to take it off your hands. Vendor pays for shipping (you figure out who’s who).
I'll start with the very contentious statement. REAL Rickenbackers suck! You have to do a lot of work to get them to play, and it's still a fight after that.
Good replica.
The handful of real Rickenbackers I've played (and ran away from) have the same issues you've described, albeit to a slightly lower degree of horror. So a cheap fake being unplayable is no surprise at all.
Then, when no one can hear me because they're too outraged by what I just said, I'll point out that this thing is not intonated, and because the adjustment for the low string of the pair appears to be the same adjuster as the one it's paired with, there is no way it will ever intonate for both strings in the pair unless you do some seriously complex mathematics with string gauges and tension matching, or just get lucky six times in a row.
To be fair, a bad;y cut nut is not exactly uncommon on a cheap guitar and even the odd expensive one. Any issues will be exagerated on a 12 string. Half an hour with a set of nut files could transform this guitar and save you from scrapping half a set of strings,
