I never heard the Mew thing until much later, rise of the internet. I think it might be a Mandela effect thing, where you hear it so much now, you think you heard it back in the day too.
That said, I was playing Reader Rabbit back in like 1998 (I don't know the actual year, but I remember it was on Windows 98), and I'm positive my parents had like email and basic internet stuff. It would only take one kid like me to go open AOL (possibly without permission), find something on a forum and spread it across an entire school, I don't think that's too difficult to imagine, in the case that I'm wrong about the Mandela effect.
