I like how they did this video, no music, slowing down moments when hits are made, and all around quality of the bout
Indeed
Thanks a lot!
Thank you for not putting loud music over the lovely clang of swords.
Very cool
There's something almost like ASMR about this haha
That's a great comment haha
Really enjoy your content!! Definitely putting the work in guys be proud!!
Thanks, appreciate that!
Glad to see you posting something new and that you are getting more sparring time. Peter, your form looks great in terms of stance and movement; really looked good (I'm jealous). Questions for Max: do you like your Infinity Gloves? What sabre are you using that the Infinity Gloves fit in? Can you put your thumb on the grip like an Olympic style sabre grip? or is there not enough room with the gloves? Cheers to you both for a great match.
Thank you, definitely enjoying the increased sparring time atm!
I do like the Infinity Gloves very much, the offer a great compromise between mobility and protection. I can also use them for a variety of weapons (sabre, longsword, sidesword, staff) which was one of the reasons why i bought them.
I am using a Blackfencer three-bar infantry sabre, but i tried them with various other sabres from my club and i could fit into most of them. (But i do have very small hands, so people with large hands might struggle more)
I am not 100% sure with the thumb up grip, because I dont really use it, but i think it can be done quite well.
Good looking fencing.
Thanks!
Nice military form. Would you like any feedback, consider bigger caution and being more active in distance menagement, to prevent being punished by someone more explosive :)
Thanks for the comment! :)
I really missed your videos, the sparring footage is crisp and it is both informative and entertaining (studying military sabre myself and this is always nice as a comparison). Do you know which sabre is Max using, by any chance? Thanks in advance!
It's a blackfencer infantry Sabre. The three bar hilted version
Thanks, glad you like it!
Nice sparring session! Some nice exchanges ;-)
Thanks Federico!
I was surprised at the number of #3 cuts the saber could get in. Nice classic looking bout. Is there a particular manual that you were drawing your techniques from? The broadsword player looked like he stepped out of Christopher Thompson's book. Nice hanger guard and retreating front step. But those #3 cuts from the saber player...damn those were slick!
Yeah those #3s by Max with the sabre were quite successful. As for you question, I'm the right guy and I focus on Roworth, whose system very much focused on slipping the lead leg on the parry.
And here I am always struggling with my #3's and #4's. So thanks for that :D (I'm the sabre :D)
Some excellent exchanges here.
How do you find the basket hilt compares to a more "traditional" sabre?
Thanks, I'm a fan of basket hilts. Due to the concentrated mass around the wrist, you can make pretty fast rotating cuts. Protection is great too, of course. The downside is that it's often heavier than an infantry sabre, which means your arm wil tire a bit sooner, if you're not used to it.
Surprised at how much the broad sword flexed upon contact.
Yeah, it's a safe modern HEMA blade. It's quite flexible but not flimsy at all.
Nice bout guys.
Cheers!
Hey! Lovely vid, broadswords and sabres are always wonderful.
I was wondering, what jacket is Max wearing? The color's great.
Take care!
Hey David, thanks for the nice comment!
Max and I are wearing basically the same jacket. It's the SPES officer 350N, his green model is a standard size and mine is a custom size.
Cheers!
@@historyandsabre Aww, thank you! I wasn't sure this'd be seen as it's an older video. I really appreciate the comment; I was eyeing up the SPES officer, so knowing it can come in that tone only gives it more points hahaha.
Also, go team Roworth!
@@nawm8 No worries, you're welcome!
I'd say the 350N officer is still worth it and they're still making them. I love that jacket.
However, the AP light, both 350 and 800N, aswell as the newer 800N officer are also worth considering.
beautiful dance
Thanks a lot!
Seems to me sabre has nicer/faster counter-attacks in this exchange (see eg 1:22). I wonder if that's related to the fact the blade is curved
What type of gloves are you using? I’ve got some Red dragons but I find they doesn’t always fit.
Hi, I use very light airsoft / paintball gloves when I'm fencing with the basket hilt. That leaves the wrist somewhat exposed, which is always a risk.
For more open hilts, I always use Red Dragons.
Hi, what practice sabre is your partner using?
It's a blackfencer infantry Sabre. Three bar hilted version
I really like basket hilts, but their mass often make my shoulder tire so quickly
Yep, it's no different for me when I don't get to train for more than two weeks!
What type of sabers do you use?
Blackfencer 1796 infantry sabre with three-bar-hilt and a basket-hilted broadsword by Armour Class.
Cool
whats a good book to start with sabers? there’s no real saber school near me
For English language sabre manuals I'll recommend Roworth's "The Art of Defence on Foot" as it's what I work from. You could also start with Mathewson, for instance
If you're interested in later 19th century stuff, Hutton's "The Swordsman" and Waite's "Lessons in Sabre" are also great!
Cheers.

Have you read Fighting with Edge and Point or German Sabre of the Berliner Turnschule? Those are the two I was able to find and order with my trainers, and some say it is good, but what would be your opinion?
Not fair for the sabre user tbh, broadsword has more attack angles and longer reach, getting hits in was an impressive feat
Hi, how does it have more attack angles? We are using the same system. Cheers!
@@historyandsabre sabre is single edged broadsword is double edged, that makes a difference, unless this is a backsword
@@Ravenblues Fair point.
