@@Berliozioz Some of us didn't have the money to go. It's not that we didn't want to go. Their head roadie's wife used to babysit my son. I'm a massive Rush fan.
I was there. July 30, 2003. SARS Stock. Downsview Park in Toronto. 10 hour concert with 15 different artists including The Rolling Stones, AC/DC, The Guess Who, Justin Timberlake, Blue Rodeo, Tea Party and Rush just to name a few. 450-500K in attendance. Beat $21.50 (Canadian lol) I’ve ever spent.
I encourage you to listen to the song again but with the lyrics in-hand. Rush wrote some of the most complex and meaningful lyrics for songs with some of the greatest riffs you'll ever hear. "But glittering prizes and endless compromises........shatter the illusion of integrity". Amazing.
When I saw Rush live they opened with this song. But the version in this particular video starts with them playing a bit of the Rolling Stones’ “Paint It Black,” which they didn’t do at the concert I saw.
This band is sick, seen them live probably 10-12 times, seriously the best live band ever, insanely good, so much sound for a 3 piece an all 3 are too tier musicians So so good You should check out some early stuff, bytor an the snow dog, the necromancer, if you wanna hear Geddy rip base lines an sing at a level not many can reach check out Something for Nothing, or the eerie Witch Hunt will give you goose bumps
That opening is homage to the British airwaves, its them hearing the Rolling Stones back in the day on the radios….. (This version)Also to the DJs playing outlawed Rock & Roll. Believe in the freedom of music…….
I thought the Stones headlined it, but either way Rush sure kicked the shit outta them by playing that little piece of ’Paint it Black’ if only they did a snippet of ‘Back in Black’ like that too!🤯🍻Maybe Keith and the boys could play ‘Tom Sawyer’🤘🤣
I believe that Alex’s wild solo in this song represents the “salesmen”; you know, pushy, manipulative, love the sound of their own voice… and determined to make the finish.
Neil Peart wrote most of the lyrics, composed and arranged every song. Listen to the Trees and Xanadu. Love your reaction. You are now in the Rush Limelight Forever!! Thanks Jay!!
@@kidkong637 A fair point indeed! Cream and Jimi's band were amazing. I just think that like so many other acts in music, they laid the groundwork for future bands to build on. Music is subjective of course- but I feel that what Rush accomplished as a three piece is simply unbeatable.
Geddy Lee might be the best bassist ever. He sounds like himself no matter the bass you hand him, his style is unique, he plays keyboard and sings while playing bass. What an absolute legend.
My first Rush show was the Presto tour in Portland. I'm a drummer and worshiped Neil at that time (still kinda do). I was not prepared for the awesomeness that is Geddy Lee on the bass.
Geddy's hero was Chris Squire from Yes. For me, it's a toss up between the two. Geddy performed Roundabout with Yes at Yes' induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Geddy is the only living bass player that could pull that bass line off.
Alex was just tearing it up on guitar! Great song and performance. All the changes in the music represented different radio stations. Other Songs Digital Man from the Snakes and Arrows tour Caravan from the Time Machine Tour Show don't tell (rabbits from a hat intro ) Presto tour 1990 Cheers
For me, their recognizability went deeper then just Geddy's voice. When I heard a new Rush track for the first time on the radio, I could tell before Geddy even sang a note. But, I've been a fan since 1981, and I had 7 years of albums to catch up on.
Dude, your reaction to Alex's guitar solo is absolutely classic. Rush is certainly one of a kind and the likes we will never see again. Make sure you watch Xanadu live 1981. Perfect example of the bands technical prowess. Enjoy your Rush discovery.
The best drummer and bassist and , in my opinion, the most underrated guitarist in on band!!! Magic!!! Go back and listen to the lyrics...written by the drummer. Don't react..enjoy!!! My 2nd favorite band!!!!
Jay, I lived this shit Live!!!! There are few that can ever top this.. I love that you love it.. we are bonded in music|!!! You are SO loved, Jay!!! xo
I'm glad you are enjoying RUSH the drummer Neil Peart, Geddy Lee vocalist/Bass, Alex Lifeson guitar. They've been around for long time after Neil's passing no one can fill those shoes. Neil Peart a gifted drummer alongside Bonham.
Hey my friend, life long RUSH fan only seen the guys once! (Power Windows Tour) in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada! Check out (Xanadu, live in Montreal 1981) Great Video! Cheers! RIP (Neal Peart The Professor!)
I was lucky enough to bring my dad to a Rush concert before Neil passed away. I’ll never forget that night ❤ Check out “Red Barchetta” I agree about his voice, easily recognizable.. kinda like Ozzy.
do the studio version to get the full effect of the song or official video if u want. great reaction try freewill if u haven't live in Cleveland 2011 or studio well wishes to u and yours
This one really puts Alex's talent front and center. He is as good on a guitar as Neil was on drums. I think their Roll the Bones album is underappreciated. It was a big commercial success when it was released, but it doesn't get the love that Moving Pictures does. Rush has moved around a lot with their musical style, and Bones was a big change from their earlier work.
They are simulating turning the dial on a radio and switching between stations playing different songs. That’s why they have all the crazy transitions.
if you want some other Rush to check out listen to La Villa Strangiato which is an instrumental and 2112 which is one whole side of an album 2112 twenty-one twelve
This is one of Rush's favorite songs to play live. Tom Sawyer there biggest hit. Is His Least favorite! And if you're not familiar with Paint It Black by The Rolling Stones you should check it out.
Try nobody's hero live 1997 or test for echo live 1997 or show don't tell live 1990 or 2112 live 1997 or one little victory live in Rio.these are a great start for now.😊😊😊
This song is the Rush pill, everything rush is in a single radio friendly track. Technically the best rush song, in my opinion. Not underappreciated the long operas like 2112, Xanadu and Cygnus X, or pop hits as Tom Sawyer, put this song has it all.
Unfortunately you used a live version of this track. Always, always, always use the STUIDO version of the song. No matter what the requester says. Live versions are entertaining for those who've listened to the studio version of the song 1000's of times. But for a first time listening, you really need to be listening to the original. The one that made them millions of fans.
@@christaylor5996 Wrong. It ALWAYS matters to anyone with ears. Not that Rush (or Pink Floyd, or Peter Gabriel, etc) aren't great live, it's just a very very different experience sonically, and should not be used to evaluate a song for the first time. But whatever. Keep banging your drum. You'll be the only one believing it.
Over 1% of Canada's population are in attendance. 400,000 of 31.6 million in 2003.
99% of Canada needs an attitude adjustment.
