Thank you for posting this! I agree with everything you said and have a son the same age. It seems they are open to adding a category, but I will make sure to email them again. Sharing to R11.

Thank you for sharing. There are certainly inequities within the current system, but as far as the general data goes, it does point toward a future youth category addition to include the youngest competitors. If this year's categories reveal an overabundance of U13 climbers entered into QEs, USAC would be wise to subdivide the category and use format, age and setting data from comps to establish U11 or U10. I think that's currently the most important area to update within age groups and comps. Adding a category does impose additional challenges on host facilities, setting teams, RCs, judges, volunteers, etc. Those added variables must be identified and measured, with plausible solutions ready to implement. I think it may be most challenging to get new climbing parents of the youngest competitors to volunteer/judge.
The inequity of the current state of regional QE scoring for ranking may be next. In general, the top competitors are served well by the system, but mid or lower ranked competitors don't necessarily receive an accurate ranking based on the system. For example, a climber placing 8/8 and 20/20 in QE comps would receive 570 ranking points compared to a climber earning 12/20 and 14/25 for 560 points. The points system doesn't account for the size or strength of the field in each category and divisional crossover can further skew regional ranking points. I have to believe USAC will include future improvements to the system.
Competition formats now vary widely and perhaps may be utilized according to the level of competition.
Boulder problem sizing has been a slight issue for the group of smaller youth climbers with greater skills, experience, but typically the reach has been one of several areas for growth identified by zone and top separation moves. The setters in comps I've seen have done a very good job of not simply making sizing a defining factor, but by incorporating additional challenging elements.
As far as the ceiling for comps at youth levels, our family currently prefers the regional finale in favor of potentially adding to family travel. Divisionals would also be acceptable, but understandably, the inclusion of the youngest categories adds a lot that may take away from USAC's and the host facilities' ability to present the most highly competitive events.
Besides the organizational aspects of potentially improving competitive climbing, there is the primary concern of athlete well-being. We, the community, parents, coaches, teams, etc are responsible for supporting our young athletes in so many ways. I can see the current category structure helping safeguard against the youngest competitors enduring an iso format regional that they may not be ready for and parents may not be fully aware of.
I do hope to see some positive changes come as a result of a well-designed plan to support our youth climbers and increase equity, accessibility, and inclusivity among categories.

Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts as well! I think most parents especially those with younger climbers can all appreciate the need for a younger age division.

So Scratchrick would need to compete against Paul? ... That's nuts :D

I thought the categories were shifted one year. For example, my kid has one extra year in the current category and not two.

Yes that is correct. I think there is some confusion because of the names, U13 is birth year 2013 and under. Which really makes it U12. Previously it would have been U11. Some parents in our regions have found this confusing and missed competitions because of it.

Yes it used to be YD "11 and under" now it's U13 "under 12" so one year more in the previous YD, but that's a huge difference (over a 40% age gap for a 7 year old)

It benefits me because I’m last year u13 now, but they should change the ages. (Edit) as soon as I saw the video, I commented about the British youth series lol

And USA Climbing is the only hyper-competitive series for youth climbers.

Will say this video doesn't show the results for similar competitions for the other age groups without the age gaps. The truth is that the sport is brutal on new competitors regardless of age. That being said I do think there is plenty of room for a younger age group and a place for the now U13s to be a stepping stone by opening up Divisionals and maybe easier lead routes in competitions.

Glad you agree theres room for a younger (entry level) age group. But to your initial comment there's a difference between starting the sport "late" and being new having to compete against experienced veterans and the "entry" age groups (little kid and young kid) which should be categorized and set accordingly why that comment isn't really relevant to this topic.
