    I like Smallrig and I really want to like this system but it is very silly-looking, lazily-designed and cluttered. Who wants npf batteries in such an awkward mounting position on their rig? Why not internal batteries for the motor? They should have thought this out a bit better. For now, it’s gimmicky and does not provide the best function. There are much better follow focus systems out there that cost less than this.

      Honestly, having a quicker, low profile npf battery I'd prefer then the no battery plate on the nucleus nano, and weird batteries and battery chargers for the hand module.
      Not to knock you completely, I do think there are places that they could have done better, especially for the price, but it's a step in the right direction.

      Because internal batteries would mean heavier and much larger motors and for those who prefer to just use the USB-C to power the motors from your rig's power solution, that would be a problem.
      I have one of those from Moza, it's very bulky because of the internal battery.
      Another downside is that when the battery runs out, you have to charge it and can't use the motor at all. With an external battery, you can just grab another one.

      @@Ishai1 ok but internal batteries will never be as big as the npfs? 😅 To be fair, my dislike also stems from the fact that I do not like those batteries. Also, internal batteries can be replaced when they run out. There are systems like that. 🙂

      @@ElayneOkaya even smaller batteries will add weight you don't want if you're powering through the USB and smaller batteries mean shorter run time.
      If it's removable batteries, they'll go with one of the standard options, which would make the whole thing bulky (but at least you'll be able to leave it empty and save that weight).
      They did that for the handle, which oddly uses the Canon battery (I guess because of the size, it's just odd to use two different types of batteries in the same product)

    Could one also use one of the motorized geared units as a zoom (push/pull) mounted to the 15mm rod and then set the camera (canon) on auto iso and auto focus (or touch screen) while using the wireless controller manually mounted to one side of a 15mm rod or just hand held and zoom controller like a lanc cord is to a video camera?

    Thanks for the review. It's great to see SmallRig expand their product line, but why did they choose to use those horrid Canon batteries for the grip, and a more affordable and reliable Sony style battery for the motor? Why not make the handle accommodate the Sony battery instead forcing users to charge two different battery types?

    • @initialfocus

      Hey it’s actually the RS3 Pro. I just use the quick release plate it came with and the Tilta cage for P6K Pro. Balances amazingly. I just auto tune the motors.

  • @JoATTech
    @JoATTech Год назад +6

    Looks amazing, the only lame thing is that upper wheel mounts only for right hand operation. I would prefer left hand operation. It's useful for half cages. And most of the cameras got a grip on right side, so having the handle on right side will be redundant.

    • @initialfocus
      @initialfocus  Год назад +1

      I mean I only have Cine lenses. And my IRIX gears are pretty stiff. These didn’t have issues pushing or pulling those. I can’t compare to much more expensive focus motors as I don’t have much experience on the ultra high end ones but these didn’t seem to lag too much for quick pulls.

    Cool! I may not switch away from my Tilta Nucleus M kit yet. But it's exciting to see that more options are on the market. I still would love for a good FIZ System that is affordable to match the ARRI HI-5 system. But that's a reach. Still would love for some of these to be able to save and load lens profiles so that calibration is easy and as well you can get marks on the FIZ hand unit showing those distance marks. There's a reason it's expensive and in an ARRI HI-5 and not these low cost indie filmmaker units.
    But I'm looking at Blackmagic to maybe team up with someone like Tilta or SmallRig to create something that will also communicate with the Blackmagic Cameras and allow some camera control along with the lens control.
