Dr. William Winterholler: Some of the most popular options that exist for restoring someone's smile when they have teeth that are failing them, Number 1, we talk to patients about dentures. We like to educate our patients to know that beyond dentures and the poor quality of being able to function with dentures, even though you can still get a nice smile. Implants start to restore your ability to function, making it look pretty as the easy part. Making it function well is the part that really matters. Snap-in dentures are a good solution. They give someone a better quality of life. The best option is when we're able to put more implants in.
The All-on-4, Teeth-in-a-Day, All-on-6, it's been called many different things, but that's where you start to get into that life-changing, higher quality of life. We always tell our patients, "We use a lot of cliche analogies and say you go to your hip doctor and you have a bad hip, they don't give you wheelchair; they give you an implant. With that implant, you may not be able to run a marathon, but you're going to be able to have a normal life again. Dental implants allow us to do that very thing.
No two patients are are exactly alike, so every patient needs an individual-specific plan and you need to be able to adapt that plan to get them to where they need to be, with their goals and dreams of having a beautiful, functional smile. When we plan these procedures, technology is a tool that allows us to be able to pre-plan and have everything at the ready in case there's some sort of an issue that we have to adapt to. It allows us to make sure that the patient, no matter what, leaves with some beautiful teeth. Technology allows us a lot of freedoms that are not allowed in the analog world of building teeth.
When a patient comes in for a consultation to talk about All-on-4 treatment or full mouth rehabilitation treatment, sometimes, patients come, expecting that they need all of their teeth extracted, that they need implants. They've seen this wonderful thing online or they've read some of our reviews, and they come in and they say, "That's what I want," but in reality, maybe they have really healthy teeth. And then you have those patients that come in that want to have crowns and bridges and not have dental implant treatment, and maybe they don't have really healthy teeth. Each patient requires some time with us looking at their records and discussing with them all of the potential options that exist. In addition to that, we try to help the patient understand if they've had a bad dental history, how we can help reverse course on that.
We try to make this a place where you don't have that feeling of, "Shoot, I'm at the dentist, and this is going to be miserable." We want it to be a relaxed experience so that you can open up about what it is that your true fears and concerns are, what it is that your true hopes and dreams are so that we can work together with you, whether it's full mouth reconstruction, one or two implants, or implants to restore your entire mouth.
At Winterholler Dentistry, we're here for you to individualize this and make it specific to your needs.
