Two bright examples of the new generation entrepreneurs and creatives from The Netherlands: Sevdaliza and Gunifort Uwambaga. These two thought-provoking artists meet on stage for their conversation about art and business blends together in their worlds. How can you really make a change as an artist? Can you remain an independent artist at the moment you become successful?
Dutch-Iranian and internationally successful multidisciplinary artist Sevdaliza is a master in “bending genres”, with her music that draws on genres including electronic, punk, triphop, grime and the avant-garde. Bookstore-owner and publisher Gunifort Uwambaga focuses on visually driven publications.
This programme is rescheduled from October. If you have purchased ticket(s) for the old date, your ticket(s) remain valid. You are informed per email.
    Speakers
Sevdaliza (Teheran, Iran) is an autodidactic singer, songwriter, director and composer. Her creations contrast husky vocals with cutting strings and bass lines setting an-enigmatic mood. Born in Iranand residing in the Netherlands, Sevdalizahas made quite the impression with her consistent release of audiovisual experiences. Sevdaliza’s melancholic visceral voice floats over beds of thumping triphop dubs, married with classical harmonies. Rhythmic tensions build slowly into chaotic climaxes. In 2020, Sevdaliza will continue her powerful career with a collection of releases that will leave a great impact in youth culture and far beyond.
Gunifort Uwambaga is a co-owner of MENDO, a publishing company and bookstore, based in Amsterdam, that focuses on visually driven publications. Born in Rwanda, Gunifort came to the Netherlands at the age of 8. When he was 18 he met Mendo co-owner and co-founder Roy Rietstap and started working at MENDO. Even though the aim wasn’t to stay at MENDO - Gunifort worked as a private banker trainee - he never left.

Not to be overly focused on Sevdaliza’s appearance but it really aligns with her esoteric music. She really reminds me of classical paintings of the Sphinx. Such a perfect mixture of womanly and robust. Of gentle love and unyielding might.
The way she speaks is reminiscent of old Hollywood actresses, it’s very pleasant fo the ears and clearly enunciated.

This is surreal. This discussion has been a long time coming. I am Rwandan and I've been listening to Sevdaliza for years now since her first project. I have gotten so much knowledge, perspective, insight from her music that i can't even begin to put it into words. I can feel her energy from the screen just listening to her talk and express herself. This interview with Sevda and a fellow Rwandan was such a pleasant surprise. I am Ugandan and got into Sevdaliza's music back in 2017. She has a way of being vulnerable and mysterious in her art that is rare these days. I'm grateful I came across this conversation. It's enlightening and taught me so much about different ways to access creativity. Sevdaliza's eloquence combined with Gunifort's informed analysis made this a delight for me to watch.

These types of artists, this true artistry they bring to us, with their voices, their lyrics; telling stories, their emotions, their vulnerability, their rawness as a human being, and with their visuals all mixed together deserve the most recognition in society. 17:00 - I could see this. It seems like what she's been doing is lock-picking the unsconscious, hidden, archetypal, etc., and perhaps begging the question - where are those elements taking us in the 21st century, 22nd century, and beyond. IMHO she brings a strong amount of Hecate to the table, the Triple Goddess is very important these days as we grapple with big existential questions such as how the heck it is that we survive cocktails as awful as exponential technology with age-old Darwinian game theory. It's like E.O. Wilson said 'We have neolithic emotions, medieval institutions, god-like technology'. Bret Weinstein's recently said in response to some questions about psychedelics that we should really have all sorts of people probing every angle of the solution space. I see Sev's work as part of this much like I see the 21st century Hermetic revival as part of this as well. To bring the whole thing forward into survivable equilibrium we have to face and integrate our collective shadow.

@carbon1479 you're right, very hekate and alchemical - navigating inner and outer crossroads by sevda moon, with help from mucky sun. she deals in/plays with universal elements that undulate and breathe underneath everything we take in with our senses. a fine balance of objective and subjective. weird to analyze it so much because the attraction just is what it is, but here we are! go on with your bad self, madam sevdaliza

Sevdaliza and Gunifort were answering these questions so well. The interviewers questions were framed in such a way that was so strange- he was fawning over them/sevdaliza and I could see she was the TINIEST bit uncomfortable... Maybe not uncomfortable, but the way he was asking them was a little extra for an interviewer and was putting them on such a pedestal when all they were there to do was to have a conversation. Sevdaliza is so down to earth and humble and I think she appreciated the questions he was asking but some of the questions were a little ridiculous, or at least worded a little ridiculously.

Uwambaga from Mendo?? Ok, so, I've darkened their doorstep (and sofas, and drooled all over their shelves) every time I've been to Amsterdam these last years. That man is one of the best voices for independent, visual-oriented edition! Mendo's take on iconisation is one of the sweetest, I love that you're making him talk with Sevdaliza ♡♡♡

Been enjoying her music so much, recently got her Shabrang vinyl to play. Such a wonderful layered album. Did not know about that particular shop, which makes me intrigued and want to visit once that is possible again.

Regarding the question about the harness in min 34:
When I saw her wearing that in Shahmaran, my interpretation of a beautiful woman wearing something that resembles crystals, clearness, pleasure while laying like a Venus in that video, was like “the final test” for a mortal man before ascending to a higher level of consciousness/freedom, and he chooses “water” instead, the most important thing for human existence, not letting his internal desires or greed take over him.
A beautiful video and song with many ways to be perceived by each mind🤍
