Just watched this episode the other day (rewatching the series) and you can actually hear the chopper approaching. There was that pause after ol boy said escapee had to be dealt with and before Tim responds and you can hear the chopper in motion.
One thing you have to remember about any major city, especially at night there are multiple helicopters flying in the airspace such as news media, corporate transport, privately owned, Medical Transport., as well as law enforcement. So just because you hear a helicopter overhead does not necessarily mean it is what you think it is.. LAPD Aviation unit uses the most diverse collection of law enforcement helicopters in the country and is also the largest unit of its type with 17 helicopters available
