I’m not denying that his live performances can be sloppy especially over the last decade or so. But he’s been massively influential in both metal drumming and songwriting throughout his career and that should never be forgotten, is my point. The Biggest Reason Lars does not Practice as often is that he is too preoccupied with Other Facets of Metallica in order to keep the Band/Brand Running. After Cliff’s death, he started to take more Obligations with the band to make sure nothing goes wrong. There’s literally a quote out there with Jason where he asked Lars why he doesn’t stay to rehearse, and Lars said something to the effect of like, “I wish you knew how much stuff I have on my plate.” At this point, Drumming and playing live is just a luxury for him.

I fully agree with you and Lars is my favourite drummer of all time, but in the first half of the ride the lightning clip (before you resumed it) he was actually playing a wrong beat, that was however still in time technically.
The only complaint that i could have against Lars was the very inconsistent tempo's in later years, in terms of the fills, they are great and fit the songs perfectly. The part of the video where they're just in a room together is them just having fun and jamming. They're not playing seriously to begin with, just to warm up and have fun before a show. I don't understand why he would find that bad then. And he has definitely sharpened up his skills in 2021. They play around album tempo now and Lars is way more consistent, much better. The whole band has been practicing under lockdown and sound great.

There are drummers I like more than Lars, sure, but most if not all of those drummers would list Lars as a primary influence.

Lars isn't necessarily bad, he's just boring as fuck. He's too influenced by dad rock drummers of the 70s for his metal drumming to be particularly interesting.
