Building the TotalBoat Sport Dory: Episode 11 - Garboard Pattern and Plank
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 20 окт 2024
- We're back at it with our TotalBoat Sport Dory build and this week Lou introduces us to Willow, his silver lab and new best friend and co-worker at the Open Door Boatshop.
It's time to start building the bottom of our Sport Dory and the first plank to go on is the garboard. Lou gives us a walk-through of how the different layers of cedar bottom planking and carbon fiber and kevlar will overlap and work together to give the bottom extreme strength with little weight and nothing in your way on the bottom of the boat.
Using an adaptation of an earlier patterning technique Lou shows us how he lift the size and shape of the plank off the mold. He then works that plank down to the proper size before scarfing it onto another piece to complete the first garboard plank on the boat.

What a legend. A world full of people but only one of you
I've always felt that woodworking would be more satisfying in a vest. Lou has confirmed this for me.
This boat's going to look traditional when completed but it's going to be high tech underneath. It'll have strength the old timers could only have dreamed about. BTW: Great dog Lou!
This episode was really packed with all sorts of different things. I have to say (as everyone else) it's an adorable dog!
And also one thing that has really gotten in to my head for quite a few episodes from you now; the sound of wood and steel in perfect combination when you're planing. I love it!
Can't wait for the rest of the series.
Happy Thanksgiving to you Lou and the rest of all of you as well.
Welcome, Willow! And thanks again, Lou! My week is made!
In my opinion, you have the best boat building channel on RUclips. Thanks a million. Wish I had known you in my younger days as one of your apprentices.
That is such an adorable puppy, and so well behaved too! Congratulations.
The direct transfer method with the shingle tacks is a great trick, and i really enjoyed seeing you plane that planking.
Aint nothing like wooden boat building, caint beat it!
Willow is certainly a beautiful addition to your videos Lou. She will be a faithful companion and joy for us to see. The Dory is coming along very nicely. Hope you and all your family have a Happy Thanksgiving. God Bless all.
Te cinematography is beyond professional. Esthetic and satisfying.
Happy thanks giving Lou, enjoy your time with family and friends.
Thanks Lou! I've taken the plunge and am building my first boat. Nothing fancy, just a stitch and glue 12 foot fishing boat. The story is that I'm building it for my grandson, but you are the primary inspiration! Some day I'm going to own one of your skiffs. Happy Thanksgiving to you and that new little pup. She's a beaut!
+Mark Palmer That’s what we like to hear Mark.
That puppy looks beautiful. She won't be a small shop dog for long. Really starting to see the shape come together.
I'm a year and a half late, but happy thanksgiving to you too.
Wow! Watching you build something from nothing, PLUS Willow; you've surpassed my threshold of interest! 😁
I just love to watch a craftsman at work and you sir are a craftsman. Wonderful job. Mac in the UK
What an adorable companion! And her color fits your shop. Congrats :)
no amount of boatbuilding books can substitute this show. Wishing you Lou a Happy Thanksgiving !
And thank you for this amazing program!
You have done it now having that Puppy, you wont get rid of anyone now, good on you Lou, you know how to draw the punters in. still love your shows. regards from the UK.
Great job as usual. Your "tricks" transcend boat building and are helpful to all aspects of woodworking. Your are a valuable mentor to many.
Beautiful dog Lou, they help to bring out what's good in us, God bless and have a wonderful thanksgiving!
Thanks for another great video, they keep getting better and better. Love the lesson and detail. The only thing that would be better than these great videos is watching you in person! So glad you decided to makes these...
a lovely dog
That shooter board for blocking an edge is neat. Happy Thanksgiving to you all..always a pleasure Lou.
Thanks for exposing me to a whole new language - boat building. Brilliant!
Another great video Lou.
Admittedly, some of the best informative videos on wooden boat building here on RUclips. You do not hold back any secrets in your trade and anyone with any amount of basic woodworking skills can follow your directions and instructions. I am always looking forward to your next video each week.
Just wanted to say a good American Thanksgiving from here on the east coast of Canada to you and all American viewers here on RUclips.
Thanks again for your knowledge and video every time they are just great. I look forward to the next video when it is good and ready, as you alwas want it and make them to be, which is just perfect for me, just fine as is your dog.
Thanks Lou. You and Willow seem well met.
Love the new addition to the shop, Lou! She's a beaut!
I don’t know your history. But you would be an excellent shop teacher. I love listening to you explain what your doing, very easy to follow. And your work is top notch.
Look at those paws! Willow is going to be big, hope you have a lot of boat parts to fetch :)
I'm a lab guy and yours is gorgeous! I look forward to seeing her grow up in the coming years
Got my "Tips from a Shipwright" carpenter pencils in the mail. Keep up the good work Lou

I always learn something new every time I watch one of your videos. And to Lou and the crew "Have a Happy Thanksgiving!"
Excellent video, really enjoying how your transfer patterns! As a joiner here in Yorkshire, think your video are improving my skill set tremendously! Looks like some interesting techniques yet to come, can’t wait. Willow is beautiful! Many thanks.
Hi there Lou and team, Great now it's getting interesting and speeding up, the 2 week intervals was killing me. Love the new doggie!
Fabulous Lou, can't stop watching these. I also see a sidecar in your future.
Happy THANKSGIVING Lou,
Love the boat already.
Love the pup, look forward to seeing it around the shop.
Happy thanksgiving Lou. Glad to hear that you intend that this boat be used, even roughly, instead of just sitting on a trailer looking pretty.
What a gorgeous dog! Great addition to the shop. 🙂
Willow , great name for your new puppy and your dory!! You should take a photo of each "tool" used in the series and show a collage at the end of the build of just how few tools you use to build a boat!! I just love the way you work in a fashion that any of use can duplicate. Keep up the great videos.
Had to slap myself in the face Lou. Built a little Nova Scotia dory with friends a couple of years ago and we struggled to find extra wide boards to do the garboard planks, to allow for that crazy swoop. So scarf a curve into a narrower plank, so simple but so brilliant! Thanks for the tips!
Love those Labs and wood boats
Congrats on the pup and thanks for the learning :)
I simply love your channel and the great work you do! Thanks for showing tips and tricks
Greetings from Austria,
Günther

Wonderful vids Lou! I saw you do that 90 degree plane trick in another vid and love it. Makes so much sense and so easy! Can't wait to see that stem either as it will really start to show the shape of the boat.
Good looking pup Lou love the boat. A little new and a little old . Happy thanksgiving.

Happy thanksgiving day Lou, the way you do to strength to the bottom is very strong, it's like one piece all bottom plate. See you soon.
