I would also suggest after cleaning your grates always add either vegetable oil or olive oil to them so 1 they don't rust from having had water on them and 2 next time you go to grill the food won't stick because they are already oiled up. You can also use an onion prior to your next grilling session to keep the grates seasoned.
You should Google cleaning a grill with a wire brush. My daughter is an emergency room nurse and they see an average of 20 cases a Summer where people swallow tiny wires from those brushes. Heavy duty aluminum foil balled up is much safer.
True. That is why I first clean grill with wire brush, then paper towel soak in vegetable oil over grill to clean it and possible remove any tiny wire from the grill
Yep - happened to a buddy of mine many years ago. Had to go to the emergency room for surgery. Haven't used a wire brush on my grill since. There are safer tools to use with no wires.
Have to say this works. Got my grill clean this way and stacked the grill grates on top of each other and lit a fire so it’d burn off the vinegar and stuff
The acididty of the lemon is easily neutrilized by the salt. LoL Just use vinegar and plenty of elbow grease Then use the lemon just to remove the vinegar and turn it on for 10 minutes high temp. To finish just use oil to nicely cover it and prevent rust
Cast iron grill grates? 1. A good soak in a lye bath, just like your grandparents did with their cast iron cookware (and other cleaning at far lower strengths). 2. A good wash off to flush whatever lye is left and then a short soak in a citric acid solution (from the canning supplies) to passivate the surface of the metal. 3. An immediate coat of tallow oil (or avacado oil, about the same smoke point close to 500 F.), and then set the seasoning with about an hour at around 450 F. for the oil to polymerize on your grates... or be lazy and skip this step and throw some oil at the grates before you cook the first time.

Certainly can if you're such a pig that you don't wipe your grill down after brushing to remove the loose gunk, and only use a wire brush and then call it good.
People who only brush their grill and don't follow by using a cloth to clean the rest up are lost to me as little piggies not worth paying attention to.

Some good ideas here! I'll have to give them a go!
You should not use a wire brush on a grill due to the risk of consuming a bristle
In all my years 20+ grilling I never had an issue, but I will use crumpled foil on the advice of others like yourself now 👍
It's good for you your body needs a little iron
sir thank you!
You're welcome, happy to help 👍
Thanks this really helped my friend

We have bent parts on the grill
Never use a wire brush before you cook, where do you think the bristles that fall out go?
Have used wire brushes for 20+ years without issue. I imagine they fall down between the grates into the grill. To each his own I say
@@JonnyDIY not all of them, our neighbour got one stuck in his trachea and had to have major surgery through the side of his neck to get it out, that's all, he had been using a brush for years too, like me.
@@roscored1000 ohh wow geez that's crazy. Guess I could just use wadded tin foil
@@roscored1000 should replace the wire brushes every 12months MINIMUM. I replace every 6months. But still need to be careful
That's why I always run a paper towel with some cooking oil over the grill before I put anything on it. It'll pick up any debris
Except theirs aluminum all over your cooking surface, why not just soak them in shallow vinegar, salt, boiling water in the sun?
No aluminum left after scraping, but I do like your idea! Will have to give it a try. Thanks 👍🏻
Nah no wire brush ever
Never had an issue in the 20 years been using them, as long as they're not breaking off. Foil works well if worried
@@JonnyDIY Yeah I hear you. Probably low chances, but still I avoid it.

What about under the grates?
Can remove grates they easily come off to clean. Then can shopvac all dried drippings from bottom of bbq
@@JonnyDIY oh that's a good idea...even the grease can be shopvacced?

I would call that a light cleaning, super clean would require disassembly of the grill
Does it work on rust!!

No wire brush the wires break off and you can ingest them . Not good !!
Yes, can use crumpled foil instead. Safer option 👍
mmmmm good lemony bbq'd sturgeon and salmon
no do NOT use a wire brush
If worried about wire brush pieces left on grill use crumpled tin foil 👍🏻
looks like its time for a new BBQ bud, i wouldny eat off that one.
