    I did three dump and fills at 60k (one dump/fill and drive, another and drive, and the third) and plan to do one dump & fill each consecutive 20k interval (just did the 80k follow-up); what I've heard about these transmissions frequent changes seem a good idea, it's easy enough after all.

    thanks for the video. I have a 2011 with 225,000 miles, and I don't think the fluid has ever been changed. Definitely shifting hard at times. I've heard if you've gone this long with no trans fluid change, you should just leave it alone. Does anyone know if that is wise?

    • @leonardcann6645
      @leonardcann6645 Год назад

      To my knowledge it depends on how good the transmission is before you change the fluid. If the transmission is slipping At All,it's best to leave it alone because it's the dirty fluid causing the friction to keep the transmission engaged...so if that fluid is drained/flushed it could actually make it slip even worse. Also a good indication is the condition of the drain plug. I have a 2011 Honda Odyssey with 175,000 miles. I bought it almost 3yrs ago at 138,000 and didn't know if it had been done before. My drain plug didn't have any metal deposits on the drain plug so I knew there wasn't much wear and tear...also there wasn't ANY signs of slipping before I changed the fluid so I was confident that it wouldn't make it worse. Also its probably best to do a drain instead of a flush if there's some concern about the condition of the transmission...just to be on the safe side.
      I'm not the most knowledgeable or experienced person on cars but this is my experience with mine. Hope it helped at least a little. Gonna do mine again soon and I'm gonna try Amsoil transmission fluid for the first time. I've been looking at videos and reviews for over a year and have finally built up the confidence.

      I am in the same boat as you. Just bought a 2013 with 180K miles. Orig owner was not sure if transmission has been serviced at all. The shifting seems fine to me; going to do a drain and fill perhaps every 10K miles.
      There are conflicting information rather to change or not to change. I've read comments from many Odyssey owners; they had success with fluid change on their hi mileage vehicle with no prior service.

    Is there a way to pop off the return line after you refill with new fluid and purge the system until fluid comes out clean instead of doing the fluid chamge 3 times? Couldn't you pump out one quart at a time with the line disconnected and refill it until clean..?

    Good video. Definitely change it every 10,000km because you can really only do 3L at a time and there's about 10L in total. It kinda works out to changing the oil once every 30,000km. I've seen so many of these transmissions grenade and it's easily prevented.

This time on my 2nd drain I did the same 4 qt but it showed over after 15 miles driving, so I drained out 15 oz. and now shows minimum hot mark, i think after driving for 15 miles will show in between minimum and maximum when the ATF is hot it thins out

    When checking the level from dipstick. Where should it be at?between low and max?

    • @ExtremeDIY
      @ExtremeDIY  6 лет назад +1

      Yes - after the engine is warm and you’ve either driven it or taken it through the gears several times.

    • @BenefitExploits
      @BenefitExploits 2 года назад

      How much fluid did you fill it with? I did 3.5 qt but then drove it for a few miles and it showed below the hot low mark, so I added 1/2 qt more and it showed max. This time when I did my 2nd drain an fill I did the same thing but then drove about 15 miles and checked the level and it showed above the maximum hole/mark. So I think the capacity should be 3.5 qt. I drained out about 15/16 ounces so just running through the gears shows its at the minimum hot mark but I think after driving it for 15 miles or so it will show in between the minimum and maximum. It’s about 10*F out here so that’s why just running through the gears will not show the proper level. ATF thins out when its hot way more than motor oil.

And if that tranny's is "Clunking"? There are several micro filters next to the fill plug that will need cleaning. Easy to do just need long arms.

    ThAt back plug is in TIGHT! After, I crank the motor and pop it in gear for 2 seconds and all that shit comes out. F. All that oil change B's. Just do a complete oil change all at once by bumping it into gear for 2 seconds! Save yourself the Hassel and save some cash. Then I made a newspaper funnel and tape it. It's easy. The drain plug by the way has a socket hole in it for your 3/8 ratchet. But you will need a serious breaker or 1/2" drive to pop that fill cap. Don't wait on it! These tranny's are junk so keep it changed! Also there are micro filters right next to the fill hole! If your trany is "Clunking" into gear? Most likely those micro filters are clogging! Just takes long arms and another 30-40 minutes to do the job. Hope this helps some of you.😉

    We had a 2008 that had the trans fluid changed at the dealer every 60k, also had the recall to reprogram the trans shifts. It still had routine clunks, coasting and downshifting below 30mph and would feel like it was pulsing or thrusting at 65mph when going uphill loaded. It eventually got rear ended at 156k miles and replaced with a 45k mile 2010. I don't fool around any more and have it down to now drain and refill 1 gallon of Maxlife at every oil change, so maybe 3-4 times a year at $17 per gallon. Pretty cheap and easy to keep it clean and shifting perfectly, and for these years the internal filter cannot be replaced.

      @@gregs_garage Because they dont produce Dw1 they just buy from the cheapest bidder to their minimum specs. When a tranny has great OEM fluid and never fails people experiment with aftermarket fluids but when the OEM fluid is terrible and shears down and oxidizes rapidly killing transmissions people insist on ONLY USING the poor quality fluid that has killed to so many transmissions. Seems crazy to me. I own a 2015 Odyssey I bought brand new and I tow my RV with it (9000 lb combined). I have 140,000 miles now and it still shifts perfectly. As all my family friends and many customers use AMSOIL atf in their hondas and acuras never a proplem. Also using a true 100% synthetic oil staves off all these oil consumption and vcm issues we hear so much about from "dealer maintained" vcm equipped Hondas. Not an issue with amsoil users.
