Yep, i knew it. Pointing fingers at allies while ignoring the 3rd party at Yalta. I guess you fools think the u.s. and england could have persuaded Stalin otherwise. Russia didnt need anyones help pushing that border all the way to Berlin. And he certainly wasn't afraid of either party. Whatever was said or unsaid at Yalta isnt terribly relevant.
I don't think we, America, sold out the Polish. You forget how much this country is made up of Polish immigrants and descendants. Roosevelt was not a socialist. The man was elected 4 times, and served 3 terms in our democracy. He did a heck of a lot for my country. The fact is, a lot of people resent America because of our prowess and how much people rely on us. As for the Soviets, the British were pretty much alone and couldn't take down the USSR. Even when we and others joined in, we were exhausted and war weary, and we, the USA, took it on the nose in the Pacific, where we lost most of our guys and gals. Tactically speaking, we couldn't cover that much ground and hold it. The basic thing is, when it comes to the USA, we are called upon a lot more than others. It is a mixture of jealousy, resentment, and a lack of understanding of why we are a great nation, despite our past transgressions. And one thing also must be remembered: If America is so terrible, then why are people coming here seeking a better life? Why is there a waiting list to get inside and start making a better life? Hardly any other country is sought by so many to come and reside in.
Ben Macintyre has a marvellous nerdy charm. His way of telling the story is utterly compelling. His documentary telling of ¨The man who never was¨was a masterpiece. Unfortunately the Netflix drama Operation Mincemeat in which he was also involved was a flop, perhaps because some stories just do not lend themselves well to drama treatment.
The thing about the Germans "thinking in straight lines" is still pretty true today. As a Brit living in Germany for 30 years I can assure you that irony and sarcasm don't play well here because they tend to take what you say at face value. I was once asked why I left England to live here and flippantly replied (with a straight face) "I killed a couple of guys and had to get out of the country fast". Two weeks later someone ELSE asked me, in all seriousness, if it was true! The best description of the German people I ever heard was: "The Germans love spontaneity - as long as they know it's coming"
This excellent series really takes a condescending view of "Treasure" or Lily Sergeuiew, calling her dangerous and unstable. She did a lot more than collect chicken feed! Where did McIntyre get this information? True, she was angry that her dog was not returned to her. She had a temporary kind of breakdown there; but so did the male spies, who took terrible risks. Lily she was also paid a real pittance, far less than the other spies whom the British courted. Then, the British charged her rent. The men, meanwhile, were paid handsomely. A more nuanced view can be found on various places,, and the more I learn about this brave woman, the more I dislike this terrible and sexist portrait of her.
Books are always best, and not just ‘a’ book on the subject at hand, but other books that cover the subject. People who rely on videos and quick google searches gleaned very little from history (though they comment as if they’re experts). Well done yours. Thank you from r setting the record straight on this thread. I just hope people read the facts you have provided.
A person who considered actions which could have caused thousands more deaths because of a dog, any criticism of that is justified, not sexist. It is normal, in any country, to pay rent for accommodation, that is a pathetic criticism and any people doing this sort of work do not do it for the money, she was very wealthy in her own right so didn't need the money .
What? Sexism and Racism and Financial inequality existed during a fight against fascism? The lady in question's wealth came from where? Surely not by exploitation of people prevented from agricultural pursuits so had to work for industrialists who paid the absolute least and charged heavily for accommodations and sustenance. In truth I know little about her wealth, however I do know that many of the UK and (now) Commonwealth citizens doing similar work were never paid at all. They didn't need the money and a defence of that magnitude is somewhat expensive. Also paying rent establishes a more believable cover than, 'Oh the War Office pays their rent.' The past was as complex as the present is, and so oversimplification, while sorely tempting, is not recommended. It is hoped one understands this is not intended as criticism as you make valid points that, for what it may be worth, I agree with. All the best, Drew

German forces did NOT outnumber Allied forces by D-Day. USA alone had TWELVE MILLION MEN in military service. USSR had a similar number. The combined Allied armed forces exceeded anything that Germany could possibly mount.
75,000 American troops landed in D Day; out of a total of more than 150,000 Allied troops. The whole operation was led by the brilliant General Dwight D. Eisenhower, an American. But this British production barely mentions the tremendous sacrifice of these men, along with Canadians, Australians, etc. It's understandable that the English should take pride in this production, but it's ludicrous to devote nothing more than a sentence or two to the contributions all of the Allies made...along with the loss of life. Couldn’t watch with the sound breaking ffs
Not one word about the Russians who lost so many lives.
@@patricias5122 Must of watched a different show to me and I'm Canadian.
@@patricias5122 How many Russians were in Normandy? Oh that's right, it doesn't matter the doc. is about D-Day spies, so lets question why no mention of Russia, oh they were not there.
The British decided not to invade Calle?
Where was General Eisenhower?
BRILLIANT STRATEGY OF DECEPTION
The sound keeps cutting out. Most annoying. Unwatchable 😭👎
Great story. Most annoying part are the wimpy narrators keen on being in every scene. This is true even today.

Did Garbo go to Berlin to accept his award?
The Germans were a highly-cultured people. Yet they allowed their culture to be subverted by philistines. The Germans were a highly intelligent people. Yet they allowed themselves to be hoodwinked by dead men in the sea and double agents. Strange people.
