'Joe Biden's decline will deliver Donald Trump': A James O'Brien analysis | LBC

  • As more and more call for Joe Biden to pull out of the 2024 presidential race, James O'Brien tries to fathom 'how Joe Biden's stuttering could push people into the hands of the repeated sex-offender Donald Trump'.
James O'Brien gives this analogy: 'It's like if someone stood against Hitler with a decent chance of winning, and there would have been a significant amount of the population saying they aren't going to vote for Hitler, and then the other guy falls over or eats a bacon sandwich badly, and then they all say 'oh, actually I am going to vote for Hitler.''
Movie star and lifelong Democrat George Clooney is the latest to have added his voice to calls for Joe Biden to leave the 2024 presidential race.
The actor said in a New York Times opinion piece that he loves President Biden but the party would lose the presidential race as well as any control in Congress with him as the nominee.
The President has insisted he is staying in the race and even challenged Democrat 'elites' to challenge him at the party's convention in August.

Most people didn't watch the debate (only 50 million out of 150 million voters watched the debate). Those that DID watch the debate actually didn't interpret Biden's performance the way the media did. And this is where the crux of the problem lies. The media has been pounding the drum since the night of the debate. Breathless articles and commentary, repeated questioning of everyone who comes on the air, and the incessant coverage about getting Biden off the ticket has dominated the conversation. Rather than talking about Trump's obvious mental decline, lies, and danger to democracy commentators, paid pundits, and "well meaning" journalists have just fed into the panic, clickbait mentality, and horserace framing of the narrative. Democrats, who are always worrying about their moral purity, have played into this narrative, and we have a repeat of 2016 and Hilary's emails. If Biden loses, it won't be because of him, it will be because we engaged in yet another circular firing squad.

Bit of a weird take given the election we just had over here where, apparently "Labour didn't win, the Tories lost." What makes you think the situation in the US is that much different? Most democratic voters would vote Democrat even if they had a Capybara as a leader at this point. Biden needs to sway independent voters, sure, but the election is still far away and the choice between the two parties is so distinct that it supercedes the small matter of who the figurehead is. Biden's debate performance probably wouldnt have mattered in the grand scheme of things until it started getting constantly talked about in the media.

The title of this video has occurred to me too. The ironic thing is that part of his appeal to the Democrats in 2020 was that he was polling as the Democrat best-placed to beat Trump. That now seems to have reversed.
I thought his plan in 2020 would be to serve a term and then hand it on. He's had a great career and could continue to be influential from the sidelines in an advisory role but it's not the sort of job you want to tarry too long in. Your pluses can become minuses and you don't want to be analysing an election loss afterwards and seeing that.

An important thing to remember is that a lot of people do prefer Donald Trump because the politics of spite are incredibly powerful, and there are a lot of people who will actively vote to hurt themselves if it also hurts someone they disapprove of.
It's been happening in the USA for decades, back to the '50s and '60s where municipal pools were all closed because white people would prefer they didn't exist at all than share them with black people when they were forced by law to desegregate. It's why the rural poor so consistently vote against any sort of government assistance that would help them because the "undeserving" city folks would get it as well.
The extra special irony with MAGA is that it is mostly people who do actually have more to lose, because the MAGA heartland is exurban middle class tradies who moved out of the suburbs when the "wrong sort of people" moved in but still rely on everyone else having enough money to pay for a plumber or electrician or whatever they are.

It is sad that so many people seem to be doubting, when it's crystal clear. That said, American media have been absolutely vicious (re: debate, absolute hyperbole), even the left leaning channels, and though they have posed the same question as yourself, they've done it with little conviction, like they might be scared of sticking up for the guy. The agressiveness of the Trump style, has become so normalised, it would seem, that unless you are a bully, you are no longer respected in USA.

    • @dreamcoyote
      @dreamcoyote Месяц назад

Yeah.. I think it was a mistake to not have primaries and for him to not retire and take the baggage with him (earned as well as undeserved).
There is a risk in any replacement having some major past issues/poor performance aspects because none of them have been pressed that hard.
One of the weird aspects is that people will, generally, take Biden and know he probably won't serve the full term and that's fine. It's the continuance of the current form of govt and gears turning etc.
For the GOP, if Trump went away, everything would fold immediately. His cabinet was a dumpster fire last time and that was with the best people. This time it will be with the most loyal people (capability isn't a top consideration). People would suddenly have to accept that they are for those policy planks (and a lot of them don't want to do that).
I think the numbers just have to decide this. Project 2025 is a disaster. The risks after recent SC rulings is too high to hand the keys to someone like Trump. The legislature under Trump would be awful. They can barely figure out lunch time as it is. I think that "govt that at least tries to work as it should" rather than "the strongman will fix everything" likely decides the election.

The answer is that all that Trump is and has done is factored in. Anything he does loses its impact within a few weeks and just gets added to the pile. Even Jan 6th on the day people said ‘it’s over for Trump and even the Republican Party, they can’t come back from this ever.’ And now it’s ‘oh are people still going on about Jan 6th? Get over it it was years ago now’.
