  • Mercedes SL65 AMG is a bonkers car, 621hp and 1000nm of torque!! For years the fastest convertible in the world. It is certainly quick, quicker in fact than most Ferraris, but is it any good?

I’d say this made way more sense for storming down the autobahn flashing cars out the way as the germans do when it was new. Here in the UK now it just doesn’t make sense to me but fair play to them for making it.

Generally the Germans don’t need to flash cars out of their way on the autobahn, the standard of motorway driving there is leagues ahead of the U.K. people stay in the near side lane unless they want to overtake and then return afterwards. With cars coming down the outside at 150mph+ you learn lane discipline very quickly.

R230 SL is a very pretty car, top up or down, we recently sold our 2003 SL350 after eleven years (replaced it with an R231 SL400). Took us all over Europe, UK and Ireland in great comfort, style and luxury, without missing a beat. Cruised on the Autobahn at 120mph easily with plenty in reserve.
Unfortunately eventually it succumbed to water ingress which got into the electrics, also developed corrosion issues. But in their day they were lovely cars.

The SL 500 with the 302hp engine can light up the rear tyres at 70mph if you punch it in damp conditions on the motorway, the SL65's performance must be totally inaccessible as Merc used to setup their cars with rear tyre sizes that were totally inappropriate for the torque and power on demand.

The final iteration of this car the R231 facelift SL65 was actually outperformed in almost every respect by the SL63. It simply became a low volume halo car for the odd person that absolutely had to have the top of the range model. It's biggest probelm was new it was almost Bentley or Aston Martin money and it simply couldn't compete with either in option range, desirability or quality. So eventually it was retired. The 55 or 63 is probably a better car.

I think you should do more videos about Ferrari, reviews on 308 parts or improved parts designed by someone else for your 308 or Ferrari collection items, reviews & etc. Maybe Lamborghini reviews might help. I came to your channel because of your meeting with Iain Tyrrell. I got really hooked on your Ferrari series. I was surprised you got high views for your Fiat 500 review. While 600+ horsepower and 1000 nm torque values are incredible even today, Mercedes produced this engine years ago. The SL65 AMG is a comfortable sports/GT car that has tremendous thrust and can easily reach speeds of 300 km/h, but you shouldn't expect as athletic a structure and driving dynamics as a Ferrari or Porsche 911. Different classes...

The Ferrari is highly strung and a bit of a hypochondriac. Think of it as a high maintenance significant other - do you really need hopelessly expensive eye candy of that nature.
Whilst the Mercedes is hugely effective, understated and you can take to the local dealership for servicing. Jack has shown the sheer delight of owning a Ferrari (and dear god that’s not for me). But if you look at the way each car is used, and refer to Jack’s other videos, then you bang on about a better handling Ferrari. It’s absolutely clear you can NEVER experience handling differences on UK roads without going straight to jail as the monopoly board says….
