- Mercedes SL65 AMG is a bonkers car, 621hp and 1000nm of torque!! For years the fastest convertible in the world. It is certainly quick, quicker in fact than most Ferraris, but is it any good?
So... that giggle at 2m26 describes, better than anything else, what it is like driving this car and trust me, it never gets old!
I had a short thrash in an E55 AMG back when they were first available. Even that felt totally nuts. Crazy things, AMGs.
The m275 is probably one of the best engines in the history of motoring. I'm 21 years old, and it is my absolute dream to own one of these. Well, actually the CL65, because I think the CL65 has a real presence on the road.
agreed love my w220 s600 absolutely amazing with renntech tune otww
Cl65 at age 21? Damn your doing it big..
if anything goes wrong on that car you will be bankrupt
@@PumpUPdaBase Depends on your wealth, and your profession.
Just bought a CL65...goals! You are right, it is awesome and I love driving it! Don't be afraid of the maintenance, they are very well made cars. High performance cars need maintenance....study up and you'll be alright. They are a steal, really.
I know the engine is a big draw, but I like that it's stealthily quiet when pushed. That's what a grand tourer should be. No muss, no fuss.
I’d say this made way more sense for storming down the autobahn flashing cars out the way as the germans do when it was new. Here in the UK now it just doesn’t make sense to me but fair play to them for making it.
it is an awesome bit of kit.. even if a bit over the top
Generally the Germans don’t need to flash cars out of their way on the autobahn, the standard of motorway driving there is leagues ahead of the U.K. people stay in the near side lane unless they want to overtake and then return afterwards. With cars coming down the outside at 150mph+ you learn lane discipline very quickly.
@@dhdove I lived there for 12 years when I was in the army and this is from first hand experience. They would regularly flash people out of the way even me when I was doing 140mph.
@@GRfourfun Why do you dawdle in the left lane with 140 mph?
@@AndreasHannoverSL overtaking a lorry 🤷🏼♂️
A mate of mine had an SL65 that had been modified and it was the fastest thing I’ve ever been in and extremely scary 😟 🤣
A great car. My nephew had one 15 odd years ago, I was rather jealous as he was only 23.👍🇬🇧
I've owned many cars, and driven many others including ferrari's and lambos, by far the most versatile one is my SL55. Comfortable, plenty of power and has room in the back, and people don't look at you with envy and hate as with a ferrari or lambo
can confirm that... with the SL55 you dont need another car .. its a swiss army knive on wheels..
I have the R230 SL600 and the SL55. I prefer the SL55 the wifey prefers the SL600 as it’s super quiet. Go figure 😂👍🏼
been looking at an sl63 maybe so this video is perfect timing.
Jack, too funny. I was looking at a 2005 SL55 AMG today. I'm not sure how many km's were on it but I think it was $40,000 CDN. Such amazing deals on Cars like these!
Owned a 2005 S65 AMG a few years back and it was bonkers loved what the car was and the power etc but it was a pig to run, constantly at fuel stations and getting rear tyres, pads also need changing more then you would like to think due to the performance and weight, highly collectible now though wished I would have kept hold of mine
R230 SL65 maybe the finest convertible experience extant. But a 65 comes alive over 100mph on the autobahns and interstates of the world. The road weaponry of choice crossing continents top down 600 miles a day.
ITS A ROCKET OUT OF MY POCKET !!!!! Quite expensive when they go wrong but cheap to buy....Great content 👍👍👍🇬🇧🇬🇧🚀🚀🚀🚀🚀
Was this the Merc they had on top gear against the tug of war team ? The point being that it couldn’t get all its torque down to the tar Mac . Great video Jack . A lot of car for reasonable money
it was the Brabus if i remember well....
R230 SL is a very pretty car, top up or down, we recently sold our 2003 SL350 after eleven years (replaced it with an R231 SL400). Took us all over Europe, UK and Ireland in great comfort, style and luxury, without missing a beat. Cruised on the Autobahn at 120mph easily with plenty in reserve.
Unfortunately eventually it succumbed to water ingress which got into the electrics, also developed corrosion issues. But in their day they were lovely cars.

Cheers Tony, great cars for sure!
Classy car and great value as long as it does not break.
As a Christmas present a client let me drive his SL65 AMG one year. I just about shat myself
One is a scalpel.........................the other a double handed great sword.
nice comparison!! thanks for watching Mike!
I remember clarkson on top gear with this,he just kept spinning the wheels hahahahaha
That's pretty much what they do! thanks for watching James!
Was that the Brabus version?
It was @@glensmall9194
The black series SL65 was the one to have, carbon fibre, extremely collectable too, I have a cls amg with luxury pack, beautiful car and 4 doors! I bet the value of the 65 is increasing now.
The black Series is a fine car, of course. But it has no convertible top. And worse, they are too rare and too valuable to drive.
I know I am late for this video, however I think that the sl65 amg from this time period makes 604hp, that’s what I’ve seen, if it is 621hp I would like to know please!
The SL 500 with the 302hp engine can light up the rear tyres at 70mph if you punch it in damp conditions on the motorway, the SL65's performance must be totally inaccessible as Merc used to setup their cars with rear tyre sizes that were totally inappropriate for the torque and power on demand.
When I drove a SL 550 AMG then years ago it had 550 HP, when Mercedes where delivering the car it came with some like 450 HP. So it was send back and than the car was tuned by AMG to 550 HP. Very thirsty to drive but fast and comfortable.
Wow.. interesting to hear you had to have it sent back. Thanks for watching Jay!
The final iteration of this car the R231 facelift SL65 was actually outperformed in almost every respect by the SL63. It simply became a low volume halo car for the odd person that absolutely had to have the top of the range model. It's biggest probelm was new it was almost Bentley or Aston Martin money and it simply couldn't compete with either in option range, desirability or quality. So eventually it was retired. The 55 or 63 is probably a better car.
A car made for a long journey in the motorway. I bet it can achieve very nice speeds haha
More throaty sound compared to the more screaming snap, crackle & pop F575.... both sounds kinda nice... :)
Do one on that TR-6... But the Merc looks and sounds awesome...
To be honest, this video doesn't cut it for me. I think you should do more videos about Ferrari, reviews on 308 parts or improved parts designed by someone else for your 308 or Ferrari collection items, reviews & etc. Maybe Lamborghini reviews might help. I came to your channel because of your meeting with Iain Tyrrell. I got really hooked on your Ferrari series. I was surprised you got high views for your Fiat 500 review. I really don't care about ugly small cars except Mr. Bean's cool yellow Mini 1000 Mark 4. Ha My two cents.
Ask for a refund maybe
then you should start a channel with that focus on your own?!
This a my favorite car.
While 600+ horsepower and 1000 nm torque values are incredible even today, Mercedes produced this engine years ago. The SL65 AMG is a comfortable sports/GT car that has tremendous thrust and can easily reach speeds of 300 km/h, but you shouldn't expect as athletic a structure and driving dynamics as a Ferrari or Porsche 911. Different classes...
I hope you had a chance to drive the TR4!
My first thought exactly!
503hp in a 5.0 XKR with an e-diff was frankly too much for me, just couldn’t put the power down, the rear end would break traction for a hobby. God knows that AMG must be undriveable. Nice to see you in my neighbourhood though Jack.
Thanks chap, it’s a lovely part of the world!!!
It’s a beautiful Mercedes convertible with a v12 . The comfort luxury and of a Mercedes with the power of a super car . That’s the point !
Awesome and beautiful car 👍😻👍
A bonkers car, glad they made it! A modern day 'Fred' with a bit more power.......!
Bill's bills bills
Much as this is an awesome car im very happy with my Sclass V8 500 thankyou, more than enough power for me thanks, anyway owning a V12 will mean spending more time in a garage than me driving it! Ha!
👍 did you film some of that going by Goodwood Racecourse ?
Yeah, it was. That's near where I live
Yes!!!
Why have they depreciated by 100 grand in 15 years? I recall Mercs of this generation being unreliable, being overly engineered, too much old tech and having terrible automatic transmissions. Not to mention being a nightmare for any mechanic to work on. Cool car but too much of a bottomless money pit imo.
Not true at all literally. i drive a bi turbo v12 complete opposite of what u said.. these are strong reliable engines and trans are very strong
@@uzzle21 When I said "this generation" I was meaning Mercs from 2000 to 2006.
is a really good reliable car . what is the common issues.
Beautiful
Getting me one once I get back from airforce
The true crime here is the fact a Golf could ever cost 40+K, but then I’m old and can remember buying a two bedroom flat for 7K. Dayum I’d hate to be young again.
I remember when a brand new Daytona was £9000 and a V12 Jag just over 2k !!
Is this Merc released at the time when they had loads of electrical issues? Fezza wins…
And Italian electrics never give you any trouble hahahahaha
Not sure.. the Merc however does not have the sticky button issues of the Ferrari!
Interesting, I have the same sl and tr 250 same colors
what car is perfect - maybe a 911... the merc is a great for $40k.
I had the opportunity to buy a CL 65 and I gave it a hard pass. The maintenance costs on these cars are astronomical and will bankrupt you very quickly!
These are mental. I guess you’d need to fairly brave to take one on given what other Mercs if this era are like in terms of reliability.
No more brave than a Ferrari
@@LOTPOR0402 yea but that isnt a good thing lol
My landlady had one ! id say a proper car..
Love your videos, but please don’t turn this into another channel about supercars (old or new) out of reach for most people…
Personally I would have loved more vids on Pepe
There will be a good cross section of content dude. Unfortunately Pepe is no longer mine!
@@Number27 good to hear ! Keep up the good work.
Would you consider another “basic” hot hatch ish kind of car?
I think the mix of cars are just right I love this content with the Ferrari etc
Its built for autobahn @ 250+ kph
👍
Always like your videos, that car is a nope, it’s a pointless barge. Roll on the Ferrari 👍
Ha!! Well thanks buddy for watching in any case buddy!
at today you still can’t find any car that OEM by v12 with twin turbo and sl65amg just change the turbo is easy to get 1000hp much better then the Ferrari
I don't belive is anybody wanted this over Ferrari 550/575 as new
Nah, I’ll take the Triumph.
Well spotted Jay!!
Me too!!
Jay, if you're a Triumph afficiando check out Chef Tush's channel. He's currently documenting a rebuild of his '68 TR250. I'm following earnestly because a TR250 was my first car!
The Ferrari is more visceral than the Mercedes; I prefer it.
but the merc fits in anywhere,,, and thats the difference !
The Ferrari is highly strung and a bit of a hypochondriac. Think of it as a high maintenance significant other - do you really need hopelessly expensive eye candy of that nature.
Whilst the Mercedes is hugely effective, understated and you can take to the local dealership for servicing. Jack has shown the sheer delight of owning a Ferrari (and dear god that’s not for me). But if you look at the way each car is used, and refer to Jack’s other videos, then you bang on about a better handling Ferrari. It’s absolutely clear you can NEVER experience handling differences on UK roads without going straight to jail as the monopoly board says….
This car only is fast in let park on the side of the road!
Jack, the could-be-had big fat Merc/BMW/Jag/Etc abounds on YT. That segment is boringly predictable.
We need adventure Jack. Please take the most unreliable car in your stable, cross the Chunnel and head for the old country. On your way to Italy, show us the rest of Europe. Hopefully, you'll have many mishaps and jubilations. That would be mega Number 27 content.
Whilst I am sure it's a great car, I would take the 575MM every time.
Ferrari is the more appealing car.. but the power this has!!
You will be selling your Ferrari for that after driving it
Not for the moment !
You're driving a German made car, seem to be partial towards Italian made and a large portion of your audience is probably American and you couldn't spit out how many "pounds" the fucking car weighed ¿`_
Google is your friend, potty mouth.
Germans and Italians use MKS, even Brits are used to car weights in kg (and before that in tons which is close-ish to a tonne). Yanks? Well they had the Mars Climate Orbiter 🤣
Funny, having just watched the Ferrari video, it sounds like you're doing your best Mickey Mouse impression in this one 😆. Maybe a result of roofless motoring...
Could be!!
