  • Joining me today is Jon Farriss.
Since 1977 Jon has been the drummer with Austrailian rock/pop icons INXS, along with his brothers Andrew and Tim Farriss, Gary Garry Beers, Kirk Pengilly and of course lead singer and main lyricist, the late great Michael Hutchence they created an incredible back catalogue of catchy funk tinged rock/pop songs with amazing hooks and bundles of energy, including songs such as Need You Tonight, Never Tear Us Apart, New Sensation, Mystify, Kick, Suicide Blonde and many more.
Join Jon and myself for a very rare interview about his remarkable career, we talk about many things including how his signature drumming style and sound has influenced so many drummers around the world, Jon tells us how Mick Jagger actually told him that INXS had influenced the Rolling Stones for a track on the Steel Wheels album!
We also talk about how Jon started using electronics alongside his traditional drum kit and how the band got slated by some music journalists for doing so!
I dont want to give too much away, Jon and i had the most incredible and enjoyable chat, i hope you enjoy it as much as i did!
Jon, thank you so much for taking the time from your busy schedule to talk to me!
Many thanks to Paul Beard for introducing me to Jon, thanks to my good friend Steve Barney for introducing me to Paul and lastly, thank you to Richard Hughes from Keane for supplying me with a great question for Jon!

How did I miss this!! Jon Farris is amazing!! I was so obsessed with Inxs in the late 90's so when Michael died was a heartbreaking shock

Great podcast, Jon was a big influence for me back in the day for my career that thankfully continues. I actually went to Sabian Cymbals because of Jon, he is one of those drummers and musicians that really gets it, its not about speed, its not about crazy over the top playing its about pure grove, performance and time keeping. Nice one guys, oh and as an addition its great to see a wise, awake musician that understands whats going on in our world!

Jon was the reason I took up the drums. Was honoured when I caught one of his sticks at a INXS gig in Dublin. Thanks Jon ❤️

Jon Farriss is sooooooooooooooooooooooo underrated, The first time I got goosebumps from his drumming was his work on The Swing. At first I just thought he was the hottie... but He is brilliant

    Great interview. 🙏🏻
Such a great groove player. I’ve nicked so much stuff off this great man, esp. from Listen Like Thieves.

So pleased I found this! Jon is the reason I started drumming aged 18 in 1991. Those first two huge tom hits at the start of Guns In The Sky at Wembley on 13.7.91 hit me in the chest like a sledgehammer. Ten minutes in, I said to my mates 'I've got to do this... I'm buying a drum kit'...'. 30+ years later, I auditioned in Dec 2021 for an INXS tribute band based in the north east of England, and I got the job. I'm currently playing his parts every gig & (as authentically as possible) also replicating those loops using my Roland TD8 brain & pads. Hugely influential on me.

What a brilliant chat ! Steve Barney is a great pal of mine , I remember when I worked with pearl drums in the 80’s/90’s that our fab artist relations guy George Frederick said he’d had dinner with Jon and he was really into his sounds and getting different ones - so this is what it’s all about . Thanx so much , please pass this onto Jon if you would . Inxs were a fave band at the time but they’ve had a rebirth with me , coz they were great , the energy and passion you hear is sadly lacking with a lot f music these days . Keep up the great work with these chats :)
