I think another interesting one is Manon Carpenter. Double champ (World Cup Overall and World Champs) 2014, and seasons on either side of that she was 2nd or 3rd in the overall, 2nd at Worlds the year after, etc. Her career wasn't long but she was at the top the whole time and retired on her terms. Her recent appearance on The Ride Companion Podcast is quite good.
Great stuff. I think you’re overthinking it a bit. Vergier is very familiar with almost podium position. Peaty was at the end of his career when he won, results wise. Maybe it’s that the world champs brings out a certain all or nothing attitude, so we see winners from wider places than usual.
I do like this as a topic of conversation, but it's a tough one to talk about. I'm just some dude that has the last 6 years of DH saved, men and women's races and the world champs. I watch them quite often in series, more for the background now, but still. I feel like I "know" some of these folks, obviously it's a projection. Regarding Hatton, there is a concept of "swiss cheese model" when looking at causes for things, and Hatton fits this. We cannot get around the fact that while the race was wet the entire time, it really started coming down mid race. That's one hole of the model. Another hole is that Hatton is a good rider, and he is ESPECIALLY good at Ft William, having raced there so often. The third hole, if you will, is that yes he qualified well, but it's a rather known thing that in WC your starting position is your rank, so top guys may not be completely laying it out there. The pressure got to Hatton because I would wager he never thought he could win. Without that mentality, trying to prove it afterwards is going to be tough. I was stoked to see Reece get his win right after, and another parallel, was Matt Walker winning 2020 overall with no wins, but finally getting a win in '22 I believe. It was retro proof. Hatton can still do this. He is young, get out there young man and get some wins. Then you'll have it all.
Another topic is why did Gwin never win one, and so far, Amaury. Amaury is something like 4th or 5th all time in wins already, I think with 12. He of course has had 3 years marred by injury, and he's young. He will win one I believe. But I'll bet Gwin did too when he was at 12 wins.

Gee Atherton - Getting heli lifted to the hospital during practice doesn't count as "competing" in Rampage. 💥
