Back in the early days of DOS, King's Quest 3 was one of the family's first games, and I loved it even before I was old enough to know how to play. Creating magic spells in that game was like nothing we'd ever done before, and we spent hours trying to pull them off just right, without even knowing what the goal of the game was. Hands down the moment of choice for us was the spell to turn into an eagle and just flying around with it. Then we flew straight into the cave and finished off that giant spider, and just felt so freaking victorious about it. I miss the days when a game that simple could make me so happy.
After rewatching that opening, I now feel compelled to end every drink of water with the narrator's speech from the KQ5 desert. Ahhhh, life-giving water, nectar of the gods . . .
I have fun memories with KQ, and this video was great at bringing several of them to mind. It is still a magical series of games to play through. Looking forward to part two!
thanks just like quest for glory 5 sucked ass remake vga qfg1 was good fgf3 and qfg4 are good spacequest 4 5 6 are my favs and kings quest 456 are my favs
Defeating Mannanan in KQ3 is easily one of my favorite memories from this series. After spending half of the game under his watchful gaze, having to keep a constant eye on the clock, finally putting one over on him is immensely satisfying.
Whenever life is dragging me down I come back and watch all of your King's Quest videos. Kings Quest 6 was one of the first games I truly loved and your similar appreciation and love for them makes things feel a little better. Thank you for another night of smiling through the sadness.
I was born in 1985 practically with a Tandy in my crib, taught me to read/write/type by 3 years old, I could pass the adult check in Leisure Suit Larry by age 5 and by 6 I could even buy Larry a prophylactic lol Where the hell were my parents?
I still have my hint book for the original King's Quest. All the hints inside are printed with a special red patchwork overtop so that you can't read the hint (at least, not easily) without using a special viewing card to reveal the hints. (Or just the red filter on anaglyph 3D glasses.) The Rumpelstiltskin puzzle was so convoluted they needed to print something like a DOZEN hints for it, whereas most puzzles only needed two to five hints. :B
Unlimited fun as a kid: (1) drop down from somewhere, (2) during the dizzy animation write, ALT+D, then TP, and give a number for the new room (this was a debug feature that allowed you to teleport). What happened was, that Graham's dizzy animation was left on perpetually and you could play the game just as normal. You could do the same while swimming, drowing etc.
Man, RUclips couldn't keep up with me clicking "Like" fast enough, I had to try a second time after the video actually started. I have some fond memories of playing King's Quest games at school on old Tandy computers. We had 1 and 3, and of course no one could beat any of them, since we were all kids who barely had any time to play them after class. There were disks for KQ2 also, but the first disk was damaged. We also had Space Quest (1, 2, and 3) and The Black Cauldron (which was notorious for its INCREDIBLY loud music we couldn't shut off when you first started playing). Good times.
Great review on Kings Quest. This was the first game I ever played and fell in love with adventure games right away. Thank you for entertaining me through the other games you play on youtube. It really brings back the good memoirs. I remember the 4th of Kings Quest being my favorite.
Most of the upgrades in King's Quest IV were due to the transition from the original AGI engine to SCI, which I believe is the engine that they used to make the rest of their adventure games well into the Windows era (with upgrades over time, of course). Interestingly, they never ported SCI to the Apple IIgs due to hardware limitations, so if you can find the IIgs version of KQIV, it runs in AGI. The differences are pretty noticeable, and I believe it retains the "beam me up" Easter egg that was removed in the SCI version.
I can't believe I'm only realizing now that dorky Alexander was just following Graham's footsteps in his romantic choices. Neat collection of moments, too!
SomeCartoonChick One of my friends helped me with it, but yes! It is handmade. Felt, glue, and a feather from Joanne's fabrics. We followed a "newspaper hat" design and then glues it up.
PushingUpRoses You both did very well for just glue! I could have sworn it was sewn together. Not to toot my own horn, but I'm a pretty popular doll seamstress, and it totally fooled me :D
KQ3 was my first one too, though I had very little clue about what to do as I was at the age where I had a fighting chance of figuring out Black Cauldron or Mixed up Mother Goose. Mostly I gawked at me olde bros as they went to fantastic lands and mastered the mystic arts, knowing the secret commands to type - but I had my own save slot too where I dutifully did my chores and fretted about the notion of disobeying that scary old man...annanan...ananan. I fearfully went down the mountain (and fell off it countless times) and had the exact same reaction to the three bears. I knew how the story went so I knew what to do here! Even though I was sure Papa Bear would tear me to pieces when he found me, I knew the story and had to see it through! :) Although I found the secret lab, I had no idea that the spells were printed elsewhere (I think our copy was pirated - I've no idea how my brothers got to the end) so I never got very far until I completed the bitch this very decade - but even so, it's a very influential game for me. I got much further with KQ4 - it and Hero's Quest and Camelot taught me to spell so much - but most of it was about exploring the fantastic, scary lands, not knowing when some lumbering blotchy eldritch horror would pop out and try to murder me horribly... I may have avoided horror movies till much older but I certainly got my goosebump jollies from Sierra entertainment! Then Point n' Click came out with KQ5, with it's enthralling sound blaster, and I could actually complete the thing, which was amazing, but I always ultimately prefer the games that came before that and the mystery of learning the words that let you Quest.
My favorite computer game series too, first played when I was about 6 and I still play it from time to time. My first experience with KQ was with number 4, and it's probably still my favorite.
Loved the video, PushingUpRoses. Always interesting to see others' thoughts on these classics. I enjoyed Paw's retrospectives as well. While you probably won't do a video, what are your thoughts on the fan remakes? Particularly KQ3Redux? (I was the composer on that one and seeing as the third was your favourite, I'm curious of your opinion :) )
Thanks for the kind words! It's available for free. I lost the source files to a hard drive mishap so it's just the regular pack that the game actually uses with abrupt endings for loops and lossy OGG files, etc, but it's all there. brandonblume.com/kq3redux_ost.zip
Brandon Blume Thanks. I downloaded it, but I can't get the files to play. It keeps opening a blank Windows MovieMaker file that seems to have no data...?
What do you use to play media with? It has to support the OGG format (the format AGS uses to play music files, AGS is what KQ3Redux was made with). I suggest Winamp or VLC player. I thought Windows Media Player supported OGG nowadays, though.
King's Quest IV was the first PC game I can recall playing. I remember the stairs to the piano. I remember them because I fell off them many times. I also remember the frog prince, and the Three Sisters. I was happy because I recognized them. While I did have an interest in mythology, I noticed them from a movie I saw on cable.
King's Quest 4 is my favorite, if anything just cause it's the only one I bothered to complete (though I do enjoy 7 a lot). But there's just something to the atmosphere I just love. And that music is just so good, especially with the Mt-32
Watching this to relive KQ. KQ3 was the first one I played too, I was about 7 or 8 and couldn't get very far. I played some of 4 on Atari. I still own the CDs of 5, 6 and 7. I think 6 is my favourite.
I have issues with Sierra. I was playing Pepper's Adventures in Time yesterday and didn't get the herbs at the start, so today I had to replay half the game just to cure Ben Franklin's gout. I think I'll just play Discworld next.
Now that my knowledge of literature is much more vast than when I first played KQ4, I think Rosella's quest may have been inspired by Digory's quest in "The Magician's Nephew" in the Chronicles of Narnia.
I have fond memories of the King's quest collection. The non KQ games were not as good. But my family played them all, swapping puzzle tips. Good times
Thanks for another great video. I remember reading about the 'day and night cycle' feature on the box at Egghead in 1988 but not having enough ram to run it. First world problems.
King's Quest V was my first King's Quest game (and one of my first computer games). I didn't get a chance to play the first four until I was an adult and a friend bought the complete collection for me. I always thought of V and VI as being incredibly difficult, but dang, the first four can be tricky too. Especially the time elements of III and IV.
Nice retrospective. KQ4 was my favorite and the one I spent the most time with. Never came close to beating it, though. I look forward to checking out more of your videos :)
With the new King's Quest coming out next week, I was feeling a little nostalgic, and found your videos... I've also started watching your KQ7 series. I really enjoy your sense of humor (it's really cute), and the creativity you put into these vids. I've played KQ back in the early '90s, and still have the 1st 3 or 4 on 5 1/4 inch floppy's, and some beta versions of parts 5 and/or 6 on 3 1/2" floppy's, but don't remember playing part 7? I've always loved Sierra On-Line games (I grew up near Oakhurst, CA, so, Ken & Roberta Williams were 2 of my heroes... and Al Lowe :) ). I'm hoping to do a series on the new KQ when it comes out, but haven't had much luck with Let's Play, so, we'll see how it goes. Keep up the amazing work, and I'm looking forward to watching more of your vids :D
Is that Quest for Glory music playing at parts? I like that one too. Never finished QFG V. Barely started in, even after importing a character through the other four games.
Just found the Master System version of King's Quest: Quest for the Crown and it is a pretty unique play. It uses a dual menu system with one menu mapped to each of the buttons: One menu handles general actions such as look around, swim, climb, etc The second menu handles context sensitive actions for the screen you are on where you match up verbs with items in order to perform actions, in a way this does make the game a bit easier as you can just trial and error through the menu to see what works and what doesn't. Visually it looks like a slightly upgraded version of the original game (though some scenes have smaller landmarks like the castle, the bridges around the castle can be easy to fall off because of this) IT also uses a password system which can be a bit frustrating since this games mechanic favours save early and save often and you could end up getting a permanent dead end ion these old school adventure games which would mean you would have to type every password until you found one where you could continue properly (and if you don't know the game very well that could take a while)
Just three days ago, I bought King's Quest I, II and III (boxed and complete!) on eBay for about $10 each. Already owning parts V, VI and VIII, I'm only missing out on The Perils of Rosella, so far. :) But I'll get that one, too, someday. ;) Though I must admit that I've only played through Space Quest I to VI so far... I've been more of a LucasArts fanboy back in my childhood because I didn't like the fact that you could die in Sierra games.
Roses are you a superstar yet? Your videos are fucking amazing and you're the only Let's Play-er (that's some wordsmithing right there for ya) that I can watch. Keep up the great content!
My first PC I got when I was 8 came pre-loaded with Space Quest 3, Police Quest 2, Leisure Suit Larry 3 and King's Quest 4. I remember that haunted house scared the crap out of me! Even in the day! The downstairs room to the west with that picture terrified me! I felt like the picture was gonna jump at me..So I stopped playing and against my mother's wishes started playing Leisure Suit Larry 3 and it became to me; what King Quest 3 is to you. Of course I eventually came back and won King Quest 4. Have you tried the AGD Interactive remakes of King Quest 1-3? They updated the graphics like King's Quest 5 and are pretty good remakes with decent voice acting. They even added to the story and puzzles in King's Quest 2, which I thought they did good job on.
Same here my earliest computer memory was playing Kings Quest 3 in the late 80s and having no clue how the hell to get away from the wizard...wish RUclips existed back then lol
Rosella will always be her KQ 4 version, to me. I really wish she got more credit for not only being the first important female, in the series, but being the most capable. Far more capable a protag than her brother, anyway. In her debut, you see she's scared, worried about what lies ahead, but you know what? She does it, anyway. Throws her life right on the line for her dad, without much of a second thought. As opposed to the seventh game, where she basically has to be forced into being useful, else she'd whine herself to death.
My first point and click game was kings quest 6 and I loved that on dos; the best looking game I had too :D I purchased the entire collection in 2010 and got a chance to try all the others. 5 being my 2nd fave and the 1-4 being enjoyable classics. 7 sucked; but here's the thing. I tried to play through 6, the one I started with and got pretty far until I washed up on an island with some weird tribal creatures; before they started to sing they froze. Tried it again and again and it kept doing it, every result was the same but the other games played fine. To this day I have yet to complete that game that started my point N click adventures; all because on a bug on a CD I couldn't pass :(
***** The game runs well through ScummVM and DosBox if you want to go that route. Since you own the game you can technically download an image of the disc, mount it using Daemon Tools, and then use either of those aforementioned programs to play it. I have the same problem in random parts of Mask of Eternity, but that is more because that game is shit and it is aware of my disdain towards it.
K Q 10, Mask of Eternity, was the best of the entire series. I played them all, & still have some of them, but unfortunately, they will not run on Win10.
If I hadn't been introduced to the VGA version of KQ1 first, I never would've thought of eating the witch's house in the original. It just doesn't look very edible to me in that version. Sorry to hear about your dad, by the way. Regrettably, I have a friend on DeviantArt; who recently lost her father to cancer too. Cancer sucks!
I've only ever played the first King's Quest game, but I definitely remember falling to my death a lot. Did you play The Black Cauldron as well? That game felt quite a bit like King's Quest.
CommanderZx2 I have! I think that one was designed by Al Lowe and Scott Murphy? I remember not liking it too much; some of the controls were a bit wonky and I remember it being rather difficult in a frustrating way.
I love these games, grew up on Atari so once the King's Quest games came out it was right after the video game crash and I became addicted even more to gaming thanks to this series. I'm so happy I got to grow up during that golden age of gaming and got to experience playing these games as a kid / early teen. What a great era that was. I've played and beat 1-6 but have yet to try 7 or 8.
not to push for a talking point, but I've been wanting to hear a real discussion from a fan of King's Quest as to the exact issues that not only make Mask of Eternity a bad King's Quest game, but a bad game in general. I had it as a kid, and I remember really liking it.
Nightman221k It is handmade! It's not too hard if you follow one of those newspaper hat designs. Mine is made with felt, glue, and the feather of course. :)
We should design a KQ-puzzle themed escape room, and force Roberta Williams to solve it... There's a phone she can use, but it costs $100/min, and the automated prompts for determining the puzzle she needs help with are read... at... a... Very... Deliberate... Pace....
Kings Quest. Played it two year ago (for the first time!). And loved it but hated the Sierra gameplay... Nice that a game connects real life things. Know that but not on a bad basis.

The "roll that beautiful Bean Stalk footage" joke really helps drive home why your channel is one of my favorites.
Most memorable for me as a kid - Graham's scream when falling off the cliff. Always made me smile :)
GIRL IN THA TOW-HAAAAAA
Whenever life is dragging me down I come back and watch all of your King's Quest videos. Kings Quest 6 was one of the first games I truly loved and your similar appreciation and love for them makes things feel a little better. Thank you for another night of smiling through the sadness.
I was born in 1985 practically with a Tandy in my crib, taught me to read/write/type by 3 years old, I could pass the adult check in Leisure Suit Larry by age 5 and by 6 I could even buy Larry a prophylactic lol
Where the hell were my parents?
1985 was the very best year. Watching this brought the memories flooding back. Thank you.
I lost my grandpa to a stroke, so I would probably pretend that I was saving him in the game as well.
I FREAKING WANT THAT GRIM FANDANGO NECKLACE!!!!!!! I freaking love that game
Yeah, I hear that "Nectar of the Gods" spiel whenever I have a really refreshing drink of water. That stuff get ingrained for life.
I still have my hint book for the original King's Quest. All the hints inside are printed with a special red patchwork overtop so that you can't read the hint (at least, not easily) without using a special viewing card to reveal the hints. King's Quest III was a huge part of my intro to computer games. Loved it.
I can't believe I'm only realizing now that dorky Alexander was just following Graham's footsteps in his romantic choices.
Neat collection of moments, too!
That hat is absolutely adorable on you. Did you make it yourself?

Awesome video, Roses! King's Quest V was the first game I ever played so this hits me right in the nostalgia
4 was the first KQ I played on my Amiga 500 in early 92 as I had been wanting the game for years. I was.. Less than thrilled with it.
That description you gave to King's Quest 4 about your father was seriously sweet, Roses. Allow me to throw you an e-hug!
Loved the video, PushingUpRoses. Always interesting to see others' thoughts on these classics. I enjoyed Paw's retrospectives as well. Brandon Blume You were the composer? That music is amazing. The horrible suddenness of Manannan's theme when he appears still scares me a bit.
Brandon Blume Is the music available for download/purchase anywhere?
Thanks for the kind words! It's available for free. I lost the source files to a hard drive mishap so it's just the regular pack that the game actually uses with abrupt endings for loops and lossy OGG files, etc, but it's all there. brandonblume.com/kq3redux_ost.zip

Brian Smith I think I saw that movie in High school. Would You be thinking of the stygian witches scene in the 1980s "Clash of the Titans"?
King's Quest 4 is my favorite, if anything just cause it's the only one I bothered to complete (though I do enjoy 7 a lot). But there's just something to the atmosphere I just love. And that music is just so good, especially with the Mt-32
The sheer size and depth of the early KQ games was really immersive for a kid in the 90s.
My first King's Quest was also KQIII :) Loved it. One of my favorite moments (apart from some that you mentioned) was the pirate ship.
Watching this to relive KQ. KQ3 was the first one I played too, I was about 7 or 8 and couldn't get very far. I played some of 4 on Atari. I still own the CDs of 5, 6 and 7. I think 6 is my favourite.
This is awesome! King's Quest on the PC JR was pretty much my first video game experience. I loved it.

I have fond memories of the King's quest collection.

Thanks for another great video. I remember reading about the 'day and night cycle' feature on the box at Egghead in 1988 but not having enough ram to run it. First world problems.

that necklace is amazing!
One point of disagreement.. 1985 was a good year, but it has nothing on 1978. ; )
Unlikely to ever happen, but I would love to see a PUR "Let's Play" of 3 & 4!
Awesome as always Roses!
4 is the only one I've ever played since the High School's new computer room included a copy. I wasn't very good at it.
Is that Quest for Glory music playing at parts? I like that one too. Never finished QFG V. Barely started in, even after importing a character through the other four games.
Your Manny necklace! It's so cute!
These games... So much good memories :)
This looks like a cool new series of vids for your channel, Pushing Up Roses. I think it's going to be fun! Just lookout, says Cedric the owl!
Thanks for sharing...
You should put Needles in a waistcoat.
***** How to get the monocle to say on though...

I feel so bummed that I missed out on these games. Thankfully, gog.com has them available for purchase.

Best moment in King's Quest 5? Feeding the Pie to the Eagle and not having a recent save.
Awesome you got Mannys head somehow. great necklace.
My first point and click game was kings quest 6 and I loved that on dos; the best looking game I had too :D
I purchased the entire collection in 2010 and got a chance to try all the others.
Dr. Steve Brule
Thanks, I'll go try it :)
Sorry to hear about the father part.....but I'm glad you find solace in the game to save another
Getting off the damn mountain in KQ3 was a nightmare, especially if you didn't save....
Awesome video roses . Great how things conect for you .
I love these games... when I faced that dragon for the magic mirror, I felt badass.
Wait...you mean to tell me you could walk BEHIND the rock?
...my whole life...has been a lie
I really liked the water bit. :)
K Q 10, Mask of Eternity, was the best of the entire series. I played them all, & still have some of them, but unfortunately, they will not run on Win10.
Love that blue hat!
What are your feelings on the VGA remakes of the King's Quest series?
Nice Grim Fandango necklace! Where'd you get it?
If I hadn't been introduced to the VGA version of KQ1 first, I never would've thought of eating the witch's house in the original. It just doesn't look very edible to me in that version.
Sorry to hear about your dad, by the way. Regrettably, I have a friend on DeviantArt; who recently lost her father to cancer too. Cancer sucks!
OH MY GOD WHERE DID YOU GET THAT MANNY NECKLACE
I've only ever played the first King's Quest game, but I definitely remember falling to my death a lot. Did you play The Black Cauldron as well? That game felt quite a bit like King's Quest.
CommanderZx2 I have! I think that one was designed by Al Lowe and Scott Murphy? I remember not liking it too much; some of the controls were a bit wonky and I remember it being rather difficult in a frustrating way.
PushingUpRoses Yeah Black Cauldron was pretty frustrating, I remember it had even more ways to fall to your death than King's Quest.
great video
adoro kings quest
adoro pushinguproses e gostaria de dizer que eres uma inspiração pra mim s2
How do you feel about the Space Quest series, PUR?
Came for King's Quest, stayed for the Bush's Beans joke.
Cool-crazy old quests... :)
1985, aka The Best Year Ever ... that's my birth year! :)
Lovely Manny Calavera necklace!
Is it me or does that haunted house look exactly like the one in Colonel's Bequest?
Great video girlfriend love your stuff. Keep up the great work.
Love you, Hank :)
I remember Mask of Eternity! I still don't remember what the plot was/if it had one and how disappointed I was with it...
not to push for a talking point, but I've been wanting to hear a real discussion from a fan of King's Quest as to the exact issues that not only make Mask of Eternity a bad King's Quest game, but a bad game in general. I had it as a kid, and I remember really liking it.
Can you please make a tutorial on his to make your hat?
Roses! Where did you get that hat? I would love to have one of my own.
Nightman221k It is handmade! It's not too hard if you follow one of those newspaper hat designs. Mine is made with felt, glue, and the feather of course. :)
PushingUpRoses
Cool! It turned out really accurate.
Have you played the latest one?
So unrelated but you were the voice in Serena right?
crazygirl1230able Yep!
Nice Manny pendant.
We should design a KQ-puzzle themed escape room, and force Roberta Williams to solve it... There's a phone she can use, but it costs $100/min, and the automated prompts for determining the puzzle she needs help with are read... at... a... Very... Deliberate... Pace....
Your hat is so cute omg
lol KQ 8 (mask of eternity) is my personal favorite.
But, I guess not everyone has as good of taste as me :p :p
EvilPlagueDoctor Here fishy fishy fishy - I like King's Quest Bait too!
Kings Quest. Played it two year ago (for the first time!). And loved it but hated the Sierra gameplay...
Nice that a game connects real life things. Know that but not on a bad basis.
Four is my favorite of the Text Parser systemFive is my favorite of the Point-N-Click system
