we meet again... and we say goodbye to this series. This might be the last we see of Culture Brain on the Famicom too, unless I'm forgetting one.

Nope, this is the end for Culture Brain. That slipped my mind while doing this one.

Was there not a Hiryu No Ken on the FC where there was a first person Dragon Quest style section? I distinctly remember one where there was RPG style battles in addition to the side view sections

Hiryu no Ken series can be described as almost good/almost fun but these games suffered a lot from the Culture Brain dullness. Same goes with the Super Chinese series 🙂

The original was, as a youth, a pretty fun game. Hardly the best game of all time, but it had variety and the fighting was a nice diversion. Plus, what else did we have in '89? Yie Ar Kung Fu? Janky C64 proto-fighters?
I had never heard of this fighting only sequel on the NES. Frankly, Culture Brain's biggest sin was the fact that they never really changed or improved the fighting system between games. The original's fighting system was more or less brought back as is only with better graphics time and time again.
Is there really a reason to play this when you could more or less do most of the same on the original and previous sequels?

We also had the original Street Fighter, which was also pretty janky. It broadly had the template of Street Fighter II, except the special moves were near impossible to pull off and the animation wasn't that much better than the one-on-one fights in Hiryu no Ken. I did play that one a few times on the arcade, though not on one of the cabinets with the funky pressure pads.
On the C64, I remember having a lot of fun with IK+ and I don't remember playing a fighting game that came close to it on that system.

wow I never imagined street fighter 2 having an impact on famicom releases, but I'd believe it if they saw just how huge the game was and wanted a piece of the action. has a few cool ideas but yeah I imagine with culture brain at the helm it didn't really come together.

Well, the last Famicom release from Culture Brain is not great. I kinda like the first game in the series but yeah the one on one fighting is the weakest part.
