Downcross is a fav. Been listening to Iotunn(& Earthshine) so much that this one has not got so many listens yet - to be corrected. It seem to be the best material since the debut though - this is top level Black Metal in my world.
@@jonastrings6040 Good Question, therefore, I am gonna devote my time to answer it. The answer is simple, according to what I had listened to I could not find Downcross neither 1st Wave nor 2nd Wave nor DSBM nor Raw nor OSBM nor Atmospheric nor Pagan nor Epic nor Symphonic nor mixed with any other genre. Simple BM, therefore, I expect them to be on tour with almost any band since their simple trait of BM can suit anyone in any BM gig. However I agree that the genre debate is always there, and anyone can have their opinion, which it can be duly noted as long as it is an enriching one. Have a good one!
@@JC_Rogers_77Yes, there is a big debate there, so I'll try to give you my opinion. There is more than one point to consider but I clarify that when I speak of a pure BM I am referring only to the musical composition nothing else, based on the guitar, that is, playing the intervals of 3b, 5, and 5b for example and without palm mute Only with strum or tremolo picking. That would be BM then if you put palm mute on it it would be black with metal. So starting from that, for me any group that doesn't put any metal in its composition is the one that I consider the purest. always referring to the composition on the guitar. And then there's the label thing. Raw, Atmospheric, DSBM, there are pure groups, then Pagan, Epic, Symphonic (this directly usually has heavy metal) they do not seek to do pure BM metal and other genres such as folk and others are always very present. So Downcross is not totally pure but you can see the intention of keeping the darkness and the theme that gives the album its name, although it has a more modern production, is a cult of darkness. and that's what I consider pure, the intention of keeping a track without any metal. at least if it's atmospheric, melancholic or raw black. That's why I only stay with bands that have that concept and I only listen to bands. Although today it is difficult but it is found. Dumal for example is pure atmospheric BM. And I don't care if there are two groups that sound similar because one of them may have a concept closer to mine. Another pure group is Cultus Profano and in DSBM Make a change Killyourself is a BM with very melancholic riffs and until now I haven't heard that meta metal. at least on the first albums. I don't know if you understand well what you mean. but basically I don't listen to any bands that put metal into their composition. I've already listened to them for years. now I'm just looking for something to end with what I told you. So if I put an example of classic BM Pure Holocaust from Immortal it would be the album that I consider the purest. but everyone can have their own clear opinion. a greeting.
@@jonastrings6040 I see your point, and I couldn't agree more with you, based on the guitar and without palm mute playing is a good reference to define “pure black metal”. Just as Power Metal needs solos, Thrash needs palm mute, Doom needs riffs and Stoner and Avant-grade tons of pedals. I have checked out Dumal and Make a Change... Kill Yourself, I like them both, Cultus Profano (its singer is so hot) instead I found out about them thanks to BMP, but yeah, great band too. You have to bear in mind that I grew up listening to the 1st Wave, groups as Mayhem, Celtic Frost, Bathory, Samael, Inquisition, Sodom’s first album In the Sign of Evil, Sarcófago (Brazil), Atomic Aggressor (Chile) and one of my all-time favourites Parabellum (Medellín, Antioquia, Colombia) Ultra Metal as its was known in their hometown back then in the 80’s, I cannot leave behind Venom and King Diamond. Then once again I cannot agree more with you that (album which I am listening as I write) Pure Holocaust from Immortal (with Abbath), is a good reference to use as Pure BM, in the 90’s. That decade had great bands, my favourites Goroth, Dimmu Borgir (although it is Symphonic and sometimes sounds as Pink Floyd on steroids), Absurd and Darkened Nocturn Slaughtercult. I reckon that I could be all day at it, naming bands, there is a lot of good stuff out there, nowadays, Pestkraft (you’ll like them), MGLA, 1349, Imperial Triumphant (not Pure BM at all but a must-check out one) and Mavorim my favs, but I gotta admit that BMP is infatuating my life with BM, something which I do love. On day I gotta check all what I have been listening to these last months. Have a good one!
@@jonastrings6040 My definition was based more on a genre and label POV, but you have highly and greatly defended your POV, and duly noted, to be fair and square.
Hail Downcross!
