I do read the genre (self-help/self-improvement). That's a big part of the reason I want to write; I couldn't find the information I needed, laid out in a way that works for me.
Luckily, I had an absolute expert of a teacher - on both English and education - in eleventh grade, so all of these things were drilled into me right around the time I was starting to seriously think about my career. A good teacher can have an insane impact on someone's success, even in just a year.
New to your channel. Definitely was making mistake #2 on an ongoing basis. This morning I actually wrote outlines for 10 books that I have sitting in my head and heart for years! Number 3 mistake is that I definitely started writing chapter 1 without an intro. Even my kids were like, "where is the intro???" I'm still somewhere not even in the middle of finishing book one but for sure the outline definitely helps. Thank you so much for this video. It's nice to see someone who I could relate to on the topic as well. (Black American female non fiction author)
Read books in your niche: expectations of the reader, how other authors deal with it- are they rehashing the same thing. Create an outline topics to topics. Write an introduction as expert or experience d, who you are, write a conclusion with a positive note of momentum.
I’m a speech therapist and do read a lot of speech therapy books for parents. It’s a good idea to keep comparing- not to copy but to make sure I’m aligned with parents’ expectations. Thank you for this video. Very helpful!
I've been writing little stories ever since I was 10 but I've been always pulled away by the middle bit of the story because of my 'inner critic'. I'm 15 now and trying really hard to write a full polished, well written story. In my opinion I hate reading but love writing. I don't know how that works but during quarantine I've decided to be more productive with my time.
Thank you for the information. Before I started writing, I went to a second hand book store and found books in the genre I was writing in, but also Pulitzer Prize awarded books to see how they set up their story. It has helped so much!! Thank you for the work you have put into these videos.
I’m not a writer but I’m going to write 2 books. 1 is about tips for pastors wives. 2nd is tips for stepmoms. I just joined your community. Thank you for the great tips. 🙏🏾💗
I'm writing my fist book. I am currently doing some editing. Your info on the value of the introduction for first time or unknown writers is very useful at this point. Good thing I saw your video.
I actually do read the genre that I write in. I am inspired by books and have acquired the taste for it (self help). It right now is seeming intimidating but I learned in college the more I have read on a subject the easier it is to write about it. Good advice.
I am so impressed with you Sis. You are both personable and informative. I feel like I have a leg up in writing my book and a renewed sense of inspiration. 🙏 Thank you 💖
While I'm writing and editing a book about several random useless facts and I have an intro and all the main chapters done, I just don't know how or if I need an ending, and also do I have to have sources for all of my facts in the book to prove I'm not making all of them up?
I have published a book of poetry and have written academically. But having a discussion about parts of my family and my life, it was suggested I write a sort of autobiography. Are there certain things used only in this type of manuscript?
I am writing a series of sports history/reference books. How should my proposal differ from other non fiction proposals? Sections of my book will contain similar information, as well.
Hi Stephanie, I have a strong interest in writing a non fiction book about fashion and its evolution. But not sure how I can prove disapprove this? Can you give me some tips?
@@thelifeofawriter I know the why but not sure how prove why? Should I go back to the beginning or show it be me pointing it out and supporting it with the past and should it be in a story? and how would i start this story?
Ooh girl! You are looking so cute in this video. But I need some advice. I have a meeting with the Principal at a high school to discuss my books to their students. What should I do? What should I prepare? I'm a little nervous. Thanks.
+thelifeofawriter It is my fiction book. I have a book discussing a young girl who gets molested by her father and begins to spiral out of control. I literally heard a young girl go through similar things my character has gone through which is what inspired me to write this book. My goal for the meeting is to be able to touch young girls who may be going through the similar things in life. Also to persuade the staff to let me speak to the kids. Also to help put my name and my book out there.
Okay. With that being said, do your research before the meeting. With the subject matter being so heavy, see if you can determine how others have broached this topic at schools and if they were allowed to present these type of topics to the students. I've spoke at schools before, so the principals are definitely open to it if they can see the value in it for the kids. As far as them buying the book, I haven't had experience with schools purchasing this type of fiction book, but even if they aren't they may be open to getting a few copies for their library. Think about the contents of your book and whether the parents will be okay with this being presented to their kids. Some parents want to be aware of everything their kids are consuming, even if it's something that you think will help them. Also be mindful that principals are really busy! So have your elevator pitch ready for your book, the value your book will provide for the kids as well as the value your speaking will provide. Remember that the meeting itself will be an audition of sorts. Good luck! I can't wait to hear how it goes.
I want to write about the life of a woman who spend whole life for other not even think for herself..ir about telling woman to start loving themself .value them. Any book u know regarding so that i can read

Now that's a great point as well Beth! If you're aren't finding what you're looking for, create it!
Not reading my genre was a rookie mistake I made. Already making myself fix that.

So true Becky. And since you have access to the parents, you can ask them directly what their expectations are. Keep me updated!
@@thelifeofawriter I will! Thank you!
Great sharing thanks for you continued openness in your coaching.
My pleasure!
Yes...I do read in my genre a lot. I'll be more attentive to those books I have as I write to get some ideas, etc. and write something different.

Yeah now is a great time to be productive. And the 'inner critic' is normal. You just have to keep writing through it!
Thanks for sharing!

That's awesome!
Yes. I do read the genre I write. Which is why I said I could never write Romance because I don't read romance:)
Yes and romance is one of those genres where the readers have very specific things they expect to read.
This was very helpful - thank you!

I actually discovered the genre I’m writing in through a book that I read of the same genre. So, thank goodness
That’s always helpful.
You're right about reading your genre. What's up with that?! Should be obvious. Great tips. Thank you.
I know right, sometimes its the most obvious things we don't do.
I havent read the genre i write in, but after this i will surely start it
Thanks! I guess I should write more about myself in my intros
I always read the genre I am writing in. Have been for 25+ years. I don't like to read fiction at all.
Me neither! Well most of the time.
Pure gold!
Great tips!

Yes, oh yes! I do read my genre. :) Writing books for other entrepreneurs. I'm read all kinds of these.
Have you succeeded as an entrepreneur? Write positive experience!!!
Thanks!
I have published a book of poetry and have written academically. But having a discussion about parts of my family and my life, it was suggested I write a sort of autobiography. Are there certain things used only in this type of manuscript?
The memoir genre might be more appropriate. Autobiographies typically cover a person's entire life and are written by public figures or celebrities.
@@thelifeofawriter thank you. That is the route I chose.

Either way will work. Just make sure that you are supporting your arguments with facts.

🤣🤣 You would be surprised at how many people just start writing! You're awesome too by the way!

A genre is essentially a category to group your book in. Self help is going to be the genre, you can then delve deeper into the sub-genre.
You are gorgeous!
Yes I think I read them too much cuz I was in seminary .genre are religion and spirtuality
There hasn't been anything written (that was easy to find) until the last few years. I don't want to read them. Oopsie!
