As a Mi A1 user I'd like to point out a few things. 1) As you like smaller display size, go to developer options and change "smallest width" to 440 or something higher (built in android feature). 2) The fingerprint sensor delay was reduced a bit after an update. The sensor itself is super fast (verify it by just quickly tapping the sensor and it will recognise it, but will take time to light up the screen). 3) You are correct to try out the zoom lens with good lighting as it doesn't work in dim lighting. You can check the exif data to see which lens was used. To force use the sensor, go to manual mode and tap on 'Lens' so that it changes to 'Tele'. Now leave everything else on auto and it will take the pic with that zoom lens no matter the lighting.

5.5 inches for a screen is a bit big for me (personal preference). I love the screen size of the Nexus 5x (5.2 inches). It's not too small and not too big. Even the Google Pixel 2's 5.0 inch screen looks good to me. But still 5.2 inches I feel is the perfect screen size.
John Michael Lalata Mei up m6note is better camera and battery life , performance is similar , but of course mi a1 gets android updates and is cheaper, for 4/64 gb at least.
