Fun fact about Torn From the Heavens, it's one of Soken's personal favorites. He completed it early on in A Realm Reborn's development, when there was still doubt as to if they would succeed in relaunching the game and wondering if Yoshi P was up to the task. One of his comments about this is "It was during this time that I completed Torn from the Heavens-the emotion behind creating this song can only be described as, “just wait and see, we’re going to do this!”

Torn From The Heavens is definitely underrated. I'd say there's a few reasons why. 1) It's from ARR, so it's suuuper old. There are so many songs in this game so it's less likely for a very old song to get as much fanfare as newer stuff. 2) It's the "Warrior of Light is doing something cool" song, so it's been used quite a lot. 3) There are several versions of it that I think most people tend to like more. The Nier one is pretty badass but there's also From The Heavens which is a combination of Torn From The Heavens and The Maker's Ruin (which is basically the Warrior of Light's theme song) and is used for Omega when he is trying his hardest to replicate the Warrior of Light. The motif also shows up in Footfalls and probably a few other songs as well.

The variations here are really just other songs that have the WoL's leitmotif in them. That's probably the most recognizable part of the song, and it's what you hear all over the place any time a song connects back to the WoL in some way.

They keep bringing back Torn from the Heavens. It's in the Dawntrail main theme, in the Bridge. In the Trailer, it's the bit with Y'shtola and Thancred.

When they put 2B into Soulcalibur, they needed a player 2 version of her for mirror matches. They inverted her colors to make 2P, the one wearing white with black hair. So for the 14 crossover, they brought 2P in as a character.

Torn From The Heavens is such a classic A Realm Reborn song! So many memories, I played the shit out of this content while it was current. It was used for quite a few bosses though, so while it's a good track I think over time players sort of think of it as a 'generic' battle track. You don't really think "Oh yeah, Ifrit's theme" or something, it's just one battle track among many. It's kind of crazy that the OST is so huge and amazing that even great tracks like this are overshadowed. Also congrats on 800!

I can't believe Jesse recommended a 14 song to himself, im so proud, they grow up so fast /s. Also for some background Torn from the Heavens is basically treated as the unofficial theme song to our character as it typically is played during large moments relating to us early on. Also before the dark colossus version released (which is my absolute favorite version as well) there was actually another version that some considered the "better" Torn from the Heavens, and that's From the Heavens from the omega raids as it's omega trying to copy us and our power, so it basically took "our song". TBH before the nier version, From the Heavens was my absolute favorite take on the song and I would highly recommend it. One last fun fact, I don't know if it's the exact orchestral version you heard, but the newest Ultimate raid in 14 is against Omega and for the special final phase they use an orchestral rendition of Torn from the Heavens as well.

    • @ah3624
      @ah3624 Год назад +2

@@thatrandom_canadian It is! While Torn from the Heavens isn't your character's theme, it still means a lot to Soken as he composed it right when they were working on ARR after 14's huge failure initially. He was quoted saying, "It was during this time that I completed Torn from the Heavens-the emotion behind creating this song can only be described as, 'just wait and see, we’re going to do this!'" Maker's Ruin was featured super prominently in a certain FFXIV expansion that I don't want to name drop for those who haven't played through it yet, but yes, it is the Warrior of Light's theme. 👀

I'm happy you got a chance to go to Distant Worlds. Don't worry, I didn't recognize every song either and I've been playing the games for over 25 years, lol. I recently went to a concert called A New World: intimate music from Final Fantasy that involved a small chamber orchestra with some percussion and a few extra instruments. It was more chill music and it was pretty sweet too. I love both of those songs you chose too. There are a couple of songs in the Nier raid series where they merged a song from both FFXIV and the Nier series. I think nobody ever suggested it because you've done so much FFXIV music that I've almost lost count of what you've done already. Anyway, I'm so happy for you that you've reached 800 videos. As for whether the Nier crossover is canon, yeah, it follows Automata Ending E+, but specifics can be relayed later. You did remark on how you heard more Replicant in this Colossus, despite the theme being Automata. That's intentional, I'd say.
Lastly, I'd like to bring your attention to the existence of the sister concert program to Distant Worlds, which is called A New World. It's a more acoustic, intimate affair in comparison to that fully orchestrated production; it focuses more on guitar, string quartets & piano solos. Stuff that isn't meant to fill gigantic halls. If you're lucky, you might hear Torn From The Heavens piano solo. Very nice. Have a good one Jesse. See you in the comments, or the twitch channel.

I liken it to a big TV show. Like any long-running TV show, it has ups and downs. Good seasons with some bad episodes, bad seasons with some great episodes, moments that bore and moments that absolutely nail what they were going for. Most video games are more like movies: small, easily eaten in one sitting.
I don't necessarily like the same moments as everyone else in the game - I am the one person in the world that doesn't like Shadowbringers - but the quality is VERY consistently excellent for something so big. I've never seen another story so *expansive.* It is a huge world, with so many characters, governments, moving pieces. That sense of scope is unseen in any other story, video game or otherwise.

A couple.major ones off the top of my head are the Omega raids version From the Heavens, this one, its own little segment in Footfalls and The Maker's Ruin. It is considered the theme of "fighting giant robot" or just in general the Warrior of Light's personal theme. The players are so good we got our own theme and its so freaking epic.

That android in the white outfit is her own character, named 2P. She actually started out as an alt skin for 2B in SoulCalibur 6, a 3D fighting game. That alt skin was loved by the fandom so much that Yoko Taro made her a separate character entirely, a copy of 2B made by machine lifeforms who primarily appears in crossover content like Nier Reincarnation and here in FFXIV's YoRHa: Dark Apocalypse raid series

I do love Torn From the Heavens, it's good to see someone analyze it on its own merits, since it often winds up fading into the background in FFXIV because it gets used quite a lot. It's sort of the 'insert epic battle music here' track for when a fight is big and important, but not QUITE important enough to have its own music.

It was probably not requested by patreon, but I am pretty sure it was posted in some comments, a year ago, but maybe not some stronlgy as others xD Torn from the Heavens for us is like Prelude, we listened it so many times in game, in so many situations, that we take it for granted :)
Anyway, combining two awesome soundtracks into something new - that's a gift we got from this collaboration.

It's a great song. I feel like I've heard it a million times playing FF14, but it's hype. I think it's underrated because it's a pretty common song early in the game, so it doesn't have that more unique impact like those boss/raid songs.

I have no idea why no one requested it as you said, maybe because people want you to react to vocal themes more and forget that the pure instrumental soundtracks exist? Fun fact, torn from the heavens has INCREDIBLE throwbacks to classic ff soundtracks!
First, it starts off with the strings playing prelude, the classic title screen theme for many ff titles. It sounds so grand compared to the usual calm, soothing harp renditions, so it goes over a lot of people's heads.
Second, not long after prelude, the classic bassline intro from battle themes of older ff games plays at 3:10.
I just think it's pr neat how these were composed, subtle enough for people to not notice when they first hear it, but it hits them like a TRUCK when they realize.
disclaimer: i havent watched all the way through as of the time i made this comment

One of the most iconic tracks in FFXIV. It's not requested a lot because it's from ARR and used A LOT during the main scenario. The leitmotif is then used a lot in later expansions and pieces.
Speaking of, you ABSOLUTELY NEED to listen to Ultima (The Primals). It also does this. It's essentially a remix of Ultima but turned up to 11 and has become one of the more memorable tracks in the game. Oh and the boss battles in plays in are throwbacks to FF7 which I think you will appreciate ;).

LOVE Torn From the Heavens, I'm surprised it hasn't been requested! I guess people are so used to it it gets taken for granted. Now that you've heard it, you may recognize its motif in a ton of other XIV tunes, especially in some of the final big boss fights. It's in the Endwalker trailer, for instance. It is basically considered the player character's theme song.

The Nier songs that were specifically composed for the last bosses of the 3 nier raids are all total blasts blending XIV with Nier themes made by Okabe. Torn From the Heavens is a pretty early song in the game that's at once uncommon enough to be memorable, but used often enough to not really have that 'big moment' feeling you can get with other songs in the game. For a XIV player it might be taken for granted, which is probably why it wasn't heavily requested.

    Re: From the Heavens
It's great. Obviously it's related to Torn From the Heavens. I also have a bunch of conspiracy theories about the lore implications, but that's a tangent I really can't go off on, lol.
Listen to the orchestral version - it plays in the superboss difficulty of Omega (which also gave you eScape) - and importantly, it has *lyrics* and there's a lot to dig into there but again, super long tangent.
Also, the other two nier/ff14 songs are great too; Kaine (FF Main Theme Version), and Weight of the World (Prelude version). Both slap pretty hard.
Also, as for why people don't recommend Torn from the Heavens, it's because it's from ARR (the "bad" [aka older and somewhat lackluster] part of the game), and it's also played a whole bunch but not so much in actual boss fights / bits you'll be replaying. It is, however, the *"main theme" for ff14* in that it's the song that got put in monster hunter for that crossover, and I think it was the first ff14 song to go on distant worlds, and it plays in climactic story moments, etc etc

  • @iaxacs3801

Cool thing about the crossover version with Dark Colossus. Soken wasn't the orchestrator if I recall correctly, Okabe was the one in charge of the Nier crossover music. Hence why there's such an air of "can we beat this thing" and how the theme that represents overcoming the impossible clashing with theme of overwhelming despair. I like to think this crossover was the birthplace of Endwalker's story conflict.
