The 8th Doctor's TARDIS Door Key Prop (Build Project)

  • Building a 1:1 scale replica of the 8th Doctor's TARDIS door key (as seen in the 1996 TV Movie) from left over scraps of styrene plastic and a little bit of brass. This was built on and off in a couple of hours, spread over two or three days while I was finishing up on the main project.
    This is pretty much a bonus video and the key was built as an activation switch for a model TARDIS that I was building at the time, that initially wasn't going to have lights and sounds effects, but ended up having this feature included.
    Watch as I slowly get side tracked from what I'm doing due to overhearing my Son watching "Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back" in the background and then giving a slightly distracted running commentary on it.
    Shot, as always, with just a DSLR camera, no mic, no lights and a computer that is quite old. Also, I'm suffering from an extended cold that just doesn't seem to want to shift, so please excuse the groggy sound of my voice and the odd sniffle here and there.

    A fun little add-on to the Tardis... Quite a lot of work for such a small item - until you see someone make this kind of stuff, you get to see just how much effort it takes for something so small.
    Video highlights were the Kitten Prit-Stick & your completely correct musings on The Empire Strikes Back, I'm glad there's also someone else who hates Yoda and the Dagobah sequences...It was my favourite SW film until Rogue One showed up!

      Yeah, it often goes over people's head as to what exactly goes into making stuff, so in a way, these videos help in that regard. It's been a while since I last viewed this one, but I know you're talking about my "Very Manly" glue stick and I still stand by my thoughts on Yoda, despite some harsh protestations from a small sector of fans... But hey, we're all entitled to our own thoughts.

      That's really nice to hear, thank you... but don't do yourself down. Pick up some tools, grab some materials and have a go.
      You may not be brilliant first go (though you could be) but carry on picking away at it and you'll quickly start developing a skill set - after all, we all have to start somewhere! You may just surprise yourself. :)

    Absolutely fantastic work!!!! I especially like... all of it, but the magnetic FX TARDIS Key has that extra special bit of magic that goes above and beyond what can already only be called perfection!!! I actually had a replica of this TARDIS Key back in the day but I think the Pertwee on creen one looked a bit...wider or had more of a border than the 8th Doctor's - have you ever or do you have plans to make a 3rd Doctor variant at any point with our without the matching TARDIS? At least I expect with your attention to detail that you would consider the keys different versions rather than the same. :-) Fantastic work and thank you for sharing how you do it all!!! PS I loved Yoda as a kid tho I never understood why a Jedi Master lived on a swamp planet, but by Return of the Jedi I found all the puppets in Jabba's Palace a major turn off and felt that's when it turned into the Muppet Show, and the Ewoks in the finale battle sealed that feeling for me. I expect we re close to the same age and hit our limits for suspension of disbelief with each movie in turn. K9 doesnt count tho, right? Cause I still (and will always) love the tin dog!!! :-)

    • @PBProps
      @PBProps  5 лет назад +1

      Well thank you so much for the lovely feedback and positive comments, I really appreciate that. Do I have plans for other keys? I have thought about this, yes and I have built a Pertwee / Baker era TARDIS that could go with it. I often find that with projects that are so simple, such as the keys, that I tend to tell myself that I'll get around to it later, but I never do. I really ought to though.
      As for the puppets in Star Wars, they did slightly irk me as a child because they didn't look like anything other than poorly executed hand puppets, but I could suspend my disbelief enough (having had lots of practice with Doctor Who) to get past this. It was just Yoda's character and the fact that his scenes killed the story flow dead in an otherwise excellent narrative and none of it really added anything to the plot or even made sense regarding the timeline. How long was Luke there for? It seemed like weeks, but then when he returns to Han and co, it read as just a day or two, if not a couple of hours. And no, K9 definitely doesn't count - he's just cool on a stick, no matter what anyone else thinks.
      By the way, your name looks familiar - did you used to post in the toy section on OutPost Gallifrey / Gallifrey base? I used to post there myself, many moons ago.

  • @Dematerialiser
    @Dematerialiser 6 лет назад

    Nice bit o' making there! I like both pre and post-paint-explosion versions. I also like the roughness of the finish. Wouldn't be surprised if the next batch of classic Tardis toys come with magnetic keys now.. (But I suppose they would go the nonsensical sonic/magic wand route first - or sonic lipstick.....). Anyway, happy the client will be, mmMmmm.

    • @PBProps
      @PBProps  6 лет назад +1

      Well, if the official toys do end up with this "key" feature, I can always say that it was my idea that they borrowed.
      Thanks for your continued support too!

    loved your video i would have built it using sheet metal . some of your techniques did my head in but only in how you got to the finished key

    • @PBProps
      @PBProps  5 лет назад

      Glad you liked the video, but as I said at the start of it, this was an add on to a client build using whatever scraps that I had to hand - so using metal would have required spending money that wasn't available at that point in the commission. This was simply a little "gift" to the client that I thought he'd appreciate and thankfully, he did. Out of interest, you say "some of your techniques did my head in" - I'm not sure I quite follow what you mean.

    You have given me inspiration to make my own tardis but I'm not as skilled nor do I have the vast majority of the tools you have so I've decided to make my tardis out of balsa wood so do you have some basic measurements thanks...

    • @PBProps
      @PBProps  6 лет назад

      Well I'm glad you have the inspiration to take on such a project, but to be honest, you don't need specialist tools to make one. A hobby knife and a ruler is all you need and if you can cut balsa, you can certainly cut plastic - 1.5mm white styrene would be my suggestion, but go with balsa if you're more comfortable with that.
      Regarding the plans, the original McGann TARDIS blue prints are available on the web if you do a quick image search, failing that, try asking on my old board, The TARDIS Builders - they will have them. You then just scale them down to the size you need... if you're building a CO scale version, then divide all the measurements by 13.
      Once my Dad's funeral is over, I'll be back to work on the editing of the TARDIS model project video, that may help you, if you haven't already finished by then.
      Good luck!

    This tardis key is also used by the 4th Doctor but is only seen on a rope around tom's neck in season 12... but I'm loving that model and hey thats the police box I even used for my profile picture

    • @PBProps
      @PBProps  6 лет назад

      Glad that you liked the model, there'll be a video on it shortly, unfortunately there's been a family tragedy and that is taking up my time, but I'll get back to it in due course. As for the key, both the 3rd and 4th Doctors had a similar key, but it was different in many ways. The one that the 8th Doctor used was actually a commercially available replica that the TV Movie crew used, rather than making their own.

  • @adrianpreston5245

    Sorry I've come back a again to ask a few questions
    1.what is the Tardis made from
    2.what is it going to be used for because it looks to be in line with character options 5 inch range
    3.is there any plans you followed to make this 8th doctor tardis or was it free hand.

    • @PBProps
      @PBProps  6 лет назад +3

      No need to apologize. Here's the answers:
      1. Styrene, acrylic and brass.
      2. I made it for a client and it is in scale to the Character Options 5.5" figure range.
      3. There were no real plans to speak of, but I know the prop very well and made a few notes to guide myself in this build.
      There will be a build video on that very model, but I need to edit it first. Keep your eyes peeled then for that.

    • @PBProps

      Oh right. In this case, the process is a fairly standard one. When it comes to the weathering, like all applications along this line, it's a case of adding layers, then taking some of it away to produce a varied tonal look.
