      When he's a senior cat, he might accept spending his retirement years indoors. I've seen that happen with even fully feral cats. Once they get old, they realize they need help.

      @@zammmerjammer Oh yes, that's so true. My dad has a semi feral cat. He's always been the boss cat of the area and just came in for food. But now he's already ~17 and likes to spend his time in the house since two years. Especially during winter he only goes out for a short time to check the area. He even started to sleep in my dads bed when he's at work and pretends he didn't when dad comes home from work.

      He would've get used to the house eventually. No cat is comfortable immediately after being brought into a new territory, they're creature of habits, even more than ourselves. Making it more suitable for him would have helped too, like a cat tree, his own space... And time, some need more than others.
      This is a stupid stand. You love that his livespan is being more than halved by living outside and being exposed to many dangers. He would be happier waiting for his hooman at home.

    I had a similar experience with a cat that lived in the warehouse at a building that I worked at. He used to eat out of the trash cans when the workers threw their left over lunches away but there was other nasty toxic stuff in the can as well. So, I started coming in early and putting food out for him. Then I would put more out before I went home. Eventually the owners of the company decided to move to a new location. I wouldn't be able to feed him anymore and there wouldn't even be the nasty trash cans to scavenge in. He would let me pet him and he would run up to me when he saw me but I couldn't pick him up. Our last day of work I set up a trap and caught him. I brought him home and had the same experience where he was depressed and wouldn't eat. It took quite a while but he finally came around. It was a lot of hard work domesticating a feral cat. I actually adopted another one from a shelter so he could see how a domesticated cat interacted with me. It helped a lot. He started to emulate the behavior of the other cat plus he wasn't alone when I had to leave for work. I've had him for 10 years now.

      Great story but I need to say that at sometime, in the beginning of his life, he must have been touched by a human. I have been feeding a feral cat for almost 4 years and can not touch him articles say that if a feral cat is an adult and never been touched, he will not want human interaction. It's sad for me but I feed him twice a day and I know he appreciates me. I truly do love this kitty 😔

    • @larrym5120
      @larrym5120 3 года назад +88

      @@Linda627 He wasn't quite an adult yet when I first started feeding him. There were plenty others around too at the back of the industrial park where our warehouse was. There was a dent at the bottom of one of the bay doors where the trucks pulled up and unloaded. That's how he got in and out every day. He only let me pet him while he was eating and that was after I had been feeding him for a long time. Probably a year. After I caught him he hisses and growled like crazy. I had to keep him on my garage for weeks waiting for him to calm down.

    Great story. I can relate because an abandoned cat that had always been outside came to my porch here in Florida 13 years ago. I fed him for the next 12 years twice a day. Because I have an acre mostly surrounded by trees I was outside a lot and he followed me everywhere. When I was on the porch there he was. But he refused to come inside all those years. He was so loving and fun and feral with anyone else. I took care of him for 12 years outside and when he was 15 years old last November he passed away on his rug waiting for me as always 💔 😢 😔. I will miss him forever 💔 😢 💙.

    Every shop needs a cat. We had 'Scare-d-Cat' at the High School where I worked. She just tore up the Gopher population. Every Monday she'd have 4-5 Gophers at the door to the shop...for my inspection, I'm sure. She'd wander down the halls and walk right in an open classroom and plop right down on the teacher's desk just like she owned the place. Many teachers said she had a calming affect on the students. Scare-d-Cat was a beautiful Tortious shell colored cat. Cool as a Spring Zephyr. She got cancer and I had to have her vet put her down. The students put her picture and a sweet obit. in the school paper. For 6 years our school had one cool cat.

      I had a Tortious shell as well - got her in Boston and took her with me to NYC. Her favorite pastime was catching mice and leaving them on your pillow - the first thing you saw when you woke up!!! They say it is their way of "feeding the clan". (cancer as well - she was too small to get fixed and they said it can cause cancer - who knows but believe me going into "heat" each month - nightmare, lol)
      One of my roommates in one of the old huge faculty blds in NYC had curly hair. Kafka (her name based on the book as she would be a cat then "turn" into a bird) would visit each of us during the night and end up sleeping in this person's "bed" of curly hair. Then she started leaving mice there!!! "Here's breakfast for you!!!"
      (In Boston, this person came by with a kitten (strays) and said if you don't take her going to flush her down the toilet!!! I took her and as an animal advocate said a few "words") Turns out the cat was a BIRD! A very small cat (runt mom left behind) that would literally zoom super fast all over the place - bouncing off the walls and even ceiling. (when I would work in other countries her care keepers would say do you have a cat or a bird!!!)

They love the extra security and comfort of a warm, protected shelter indoors and would prefer that to a cold, uncertain outdoor existence any day, if their owners knew how to take care of cats. Not only that, but indoor cats aren't needlessly hunting other small animals nor contracting diseases and parasites like outdoor cats do.

      @@JB-fl4wk Your strong opinion on cats "especially" disliking indoors is just your lack of knowledge regarding cats. The reason that cat was stressed wasn't due to it disliking the indoors, it was due to it being put in an unknown area, cats take time to adapt to new surroundings. It was being cautious. Vaccines also do not make your cat flea-proof, or worm-proof. What is a statistical fact though, is that indoor cats live longer, will never be killed/wounded/maimed by predators/vehicles or other stray cats, and do not contribute to the decline of songbirds, which is a serious problem. Having outdoor cats is simply irresponsible as a pet owner. It is better to create a large enclosed outdoor area for the cat to sunbathe and enjoy. Thank you for your opinion.

    I have a stray that is part of the family now , she was left behind when her owner died , for almost a year she would stay at the house were she lived, maybe only come to eat then go back and don't know if she thought her owners where coming back , but with food and patience she found herself a new forever home.

    The most amazing thing for me is he respected that the cat didn't want to live in a closed home and found a solution the animal liked instead. What an angel of a human being. You didn't do something for you, you did it because you loved another living being unconditionally. You didn't do it for you, you primarily thought of the wellfare of the cat, this precious life.
    It is so beautiful to watch. This is what kindness looks like. You did all this effort because this grand life of yourself and the cat deserved it. Nothing else. No questions asked. You are close to breaking free from the mental bondage of this dogma. Believe me, the journey is large, painful and worth it for your fullfillment as a passionate human being. Soon you will question alot more than why cats can live in such poor conditions in the first place, when humans pretend we have taken responsibility. It is all about perspective in the human mind.

      We had a cat that lived to be 23 and we lived in a busy neighborhood. When my gf brought her home and she was not happy about staying inside we started letting her out and I was certain she would not last long or just run away. A couple decades later I was very wrong she was a smart cat and very friendly to nice people not to mention took down hundreds of small critters over the years even caught a bat that got in it house one night. She was a special cat and I never got another and probably never will.

    Paul…What a cute story! I have had an outdoor cat for 12 years now. She’ll take a tour and looks around inside everyday, but she always demands to go outside. I’ve tried over the years to bring her in but she is happier in her own house outside. She doesn’t run away.

    I think part of the problem with moving an outdoor cat indoors is they need time to adjust. Youve taken them out of their territory and put them in another where theyve never been and they will be scared af because they are in an unfamiliar place and scared that something will jump out and attack them, thats why you lock them in a small room like a bathroom or spare bedroom and give them time to decompress. A place where they can get used to the sights, smells and sounds of the new place before you leave the door open and they come out to explore on their own accord.
    If we took you from your home and dumped you halfway across the world in a different continent. You'd be scared AF too. Cats need time to adjust. its not as simple as unzipping their carrier and giving them the entire house.

    • @22lyric
      @22lyric 3 года назад +11

      @RoseOfHizaki
      I agree. There are even articles online on how to make an outdoor cat an indoor cat. Off the top of my head, and it's a tiny part, have a cat bed at work that you can also bring home. That would be a place in your home he may be comfortable in. Outdoor cats live an average 2-5 years. Indoor cats 10-15. Paul might be somewhere in the middle. If he can get out of the workplace which I assume he can, there are SO MANY DANGERS.
      Bring him home on a weekend where you can give him undivided attention (among other techniques) you CAN get a cat to do anything. I vacuumed my cat! Is he better off than before he found this man? Sure, but I wish he could find a way to go inside his house. And you can make safe outdoor areas where the cat can also go. What happens when Paul gets older, or hurt? Just sayin'.

      It depends on the cat. When I took in my little semi-feral stray cat, I was worried about how she'd adjust. The first night, she wandered around meowing wanting to get out. And that was it. After that, she's been totally fine with being inside.
