  • Welcome back to another Monster Monday: A series where I'll be drawing a monster from Dungeons and Dragons while I talk about it's lore, history in the real world and what they're like to use as a DM or fight as a player.
    In this video, I talk about Wendigos; Native American flesh-eating spirits!

    I think I'd give this creature more of a psychological horror and stealth focus. Long before the characters actually face the Wendigo, they *feel* it as it stalks them just at the edge of perception and telekinetically whispers dark thoughts and desires into their minds, gradually pushing them to increasingly vile and depraved acts of consumption. Every time a character or npc gives in, they draw closer to transforming into a Wendigo themselves.

I feel their designs in 2E are a bit uninspired, but I am positive that I am positive, that you can come up with something far more interesting and unique.

    This is one of my favorite creatures of mythology. I love the portrayal of this creature as the personification of doing terrible things out of desperation. I've heard the story of a Native American woman who ate her own children to make it through the winter before morphing into the wendigo. Love the illustration. The nightingale is another creature I find awesome. It had such a tragic story that actually ties into Baba Yaga. The glowing eye really pulled the piece together. You used contrast really well with that. Have a great life!

    My group fought a Wendigo last week, the DM made a custom version of it and the effect that I liked the most was that it passively changed the weather with its presence and caused blizzards which it then hid in and would abduct people in the low visibility.

    I've recently used a Wendigo in my campaign using the Demogorgan rules from the stranger things starter set though during the fight it's feeling like it's a bit weaker than it should be. What I'm considering is using that ruleset for a recently created wendigo and then taking that base ruleset and amping it up to be much better for a wendigo that's been around for a bit more of a while and has grown stronger.

  • @Jpteryx
    @Jpteryx 5 лет назад

    I love the owl talons you gave it, seems really fitting. I wouldn't have Wendigos be directly contagious like werebeasts; rather, I would have it that anywhere the Wendigo frequently travels is contaminated by its curse. If you take a long rest in a contaminated area, you need to save or be cursed. If you are cursed, you will gradually weaken over time, while craving humanoid flesh. Committing cannibalism prevents you from weakening, but also makes you start transforming into a Wendigo.

    This is what a wind ego should look like. It looks so deprived and horrifying, which is exactly what this thing should be like.
    One of my players had ties to a wendigo that was from her home before she left for her life of adventure. Though it would of been amazing to use it, the character was killed when the party was betrayed by one of their allies. Everyone was pretty damn sad when she faded away, but now that player is playing a death cleric that he is having a blast with!

  • @adam8688
    @adam8688 5 лет назад

    Just used one but made it have improved invisibility. They also didn't attack they just had effects that drew characters to attack one another to eat them, and soiled all their food. Exhaustion rules for lack of food made things very touch and go. Party even split once several members had two or three levels of exhaustion. They never saw the creature, just heard it and saw signs of it. If a character cannibalized another character in the Wendigo's presence, they then also became a Wendigo.

    Gotta love wendigos. I drew up some homebrew stats for a less powerful version a little while ago. Really liked the idea of a sort of insidious predator luring people in with mimicry and darting between shadows, and gave it a possessing ability upon death. Also thought it would be fun to try out what sort of wendigo might be created if someone were to succumb to cannibalism stranded in the desert or marooned at sea, and made some fun variants (CRs may not be accurate).

    My dm actually recently did something with a contagious Wendigo. It spread a plague called Wendigo Psychosis that was a lot like rabies. It had 4 stages:
    Day 1: Roll on the short term madness chart
    Day 2: You are now deathly afraid of water and must hydrate yourself by drinking the blood of humanoids
    Day 3: The Wendigo now has a psychic connection with you and can try to command you to do it's bidding
    Day 4: Death
    Might have gotten a it slightly wrong as I don't have the list of effects on me, but it's pretty brutal. The disease (which is really more of a curse) spreads like a zombie virus. After they die on the 4th day they come back as an undead thrall of the Wendigo

    • @ArcaneForge
      @ArcaneForge  5 лет назад +2

      That's a really cool idea, Wildlemon! I like the brutality of this. It makes the Wendigo an environmental threat rather than just a creature to fight! Way more challenging!

    It hasn't appeared in my game yet (luckily for my players), but I've made the wendigo a "reward" for being a loyal follower of the demon lord Yeenoghu, sort of like a flind. They're something that a cult or gnoll warband would just have caged up until a big battle where they then just let it go and run buck wild killing as it pleases or as an assassin for a smaller group. Just give the wendigo the scent and it'll do the rest.

    I know that it isn’t a d&d creature, but, have you heard the Scottish myth of the selkie? For those who don’t know, they are seals, but when they go on land, they take off their seal skin to reveal a beautiful (naked) woman. If a man finds the seal skin, they now own the woman and can have children with her (the kids will always have a longing to be with the sea) if the woman finds her skin she puts it back on and goes back to the sea. I was curious if you'd include the antlers or not. I'd want to sync up the legends with the modern interpretation somehow. Maybe their true form has antlers but they can only enter the Material Plane as spirits possessing those who have tasted human flesh? I heard of a theory that the description of a wendigo would fit a frostbitten corpse if left undisturbed, so it could only happen in truly inhospitable conditions (no scavengers) where only starvation and cannibalism could be the cause. IDK how true that is, but it was a spooky idea. So they could be devils contracted to punish cannibals with a terrible hunger. they could also be either allies or rivals of Doresain, the Demon of Ghouls under Orcus.
    I love the owls' take, though, as a way to honor the old myths. Well, maybe, lol. Myths are complicated and its almost more a window into our own psychology how we see that sort of old art. Great video!

    It would be great to see ratfolk/skaven of some sort. Pack rats, sewer rats, ect, make fun adventurors.

    The contagious effect is a great idea. I haven't gotten much beyond wikipedia, but it sounds like, in many of the myths, a wendigo used to be a person. The change is their greed and excess in life causing them to go full cannibal. There is a (somewhat disputed) mental condition called "wendigo psychosis" associated with the myths. In it, people believe they have become a wendigo and behave accordingly.
    This video also has good roleplay ideas for a Wendigo as a sort of brutal wereworlf, hiding in society: ruclips.net/video/8j-R71s5044/видео.html

    If you're interested in mythology you'd might like the youtube channels overly-sarcastic-productions and extra-credits.

      I've not heard of overly-sarcastic-productions, but I'm a huuuuugggee fan of Extra-credits. I think I watch their videos almost every day! Thank you so much for sharing, I'll have to take a look and expand my lore binging!
      Cheers for watching!

      I'm following what I can. A lot of my favourite channels...specifically those who deal with miniature model painting are very nervous about being affected. I don't think D&D channels are likely to be affected very much as the game and its lore are so geared towards older audiences, but we're forced to make sure when we upload that we notify youtube if our video will be aimed at children. So it's been implemented very quickly.
      What are your thoughts?
