      15:16 "The computer has a sense of its own silicon nature and it prints out its ingredients". The way I took that is this: Silicon is similar to carbon atomically. The thing about carbon is that it is the element necessary for life, and finally, carbon has 6 electron, 6 neutrons and 6 protons, (making it chemically very versatile, the most versatile element in terms of forming bonds with other elements and compounds). 6x6x6=216. It's a bit esoteric, but that's how I saw it, the talk about silicon is an allusion to carbon and life itself

    There is something magical and transcendental on this movie that is impossible to me explain, just contemplate. The mathematics is treated somehay that induces the viewer to a kind of pathological obsession that no movie about famous mathematicians couldn't even come close to keeping me euphoric like Pi made, along with the aesthetics and the underground electronic soundtrack. It's everything perfect and cathartic on this masterpiece.

    I'd like to speak about another point, because your review is so spot on anyways:
    With so many movies with bright colours, scenery, 4k resolution, 3D in cinema and all of that, I'm finding that I like movies that are shot in a such a way that helps you dive in and feel more of what they want to convey to the viewer. I've found this happening with Pi, with it's black and white setting and the grainy, pixelated, scenes and also with The Lighthouse, which was shot in black and white as well and with a 4:3 display format, to really convey it is old (or at least that's my logic) even if it's been released recently. You just have to appreciate the risk the directors took and I'm sure some people haven't watched and will never watch these movies because of the way they look at a first glance (somehow off-putting, old, antiquated), but it makes the experience so much more intense for the rest of us. Kudos to the directors for sacrificing more views (and more money) for a better experience. This really means a lot in the corporate profit oriented society that we live in today.

    • @lucasblue20
      @lucasblue20  2 года назад +2

      I couldn't agree with this more, I really appreciate Darren Aronofsky's creative decisions. There's an authenticity to the visual style that makes it so unique and captivating. But it's funny how that same authenticity can be discomforting for many viewers. That's why I like art so much (film, television music, photography, video editing, comedy). Two people can connect so deeply on how they feel about something, but another person will feel the exact opposite. It's fascinating

      Another black and white classic movie is Clerks, though it is a comedy from the 90's so it may not interest everyone.
      From what I know of the time when these movies were shot, the black and white format did present a risk of turning away viewers, but that risk was balanced by the fact that black and white film production was the least expensive way to shoot a film, so there was not a lot of pressure for the movie to sell well.

    Max is still in touch with the divine in a way, just not in the extreme, obsessive, self destructive way he was before. The big clue to that, is Devi. I have yet to see anyone acknowledge her true importance in this film. Just look up what her name means, and you'll begin to see what I mean.

    • @lediskjokey
      @lediskjokey Год назад

      Agree about the "Devi" part. There are also so much symbolism through out the movies, also Sol Robenson, his name is literally "Sol" which literally means "sun". And what about the "bugs" he finds in his computer, but also in the sink with the brain, and Sol talking about a bug, a computer virus

    • @carirou1
      @carirou1 Год назад +1

      Agree! Sol also mentions that the most important part of the Archimedes story is his wife

  • @Psyolopher
    @Psyolopher Год назад +5

    I also see the perspective of the movie representing an obsessive psychosis, as well.
    It's a common thing in Psychosis to connect dots that aren't connected, but seem real to the person experiencing it.
    Maybe it was brought on by his childhood trauma of staring at the sun and being blinded temporarily.

    • @robg8203
      @robg8203 4 месяца назад +1

      Just like how Sol is saying "if all you think about is the number 226, you will start to see it everywhere."
      Over-concentrating on one thing makes it much easier to find the connections where they otherwise wouldn't be found. You'll make mundane scenarios connect to it when in reality, there's nothing to connect it to.

    The scar or vein on his head looks like the y letter in Hebrew. I watched this several times, great job on your analysis! What are your thoughts on Max fixing his hair prior to seeing Devi to avoid her from fixing it again as she previously had? He seemed bothered when she touched him. During the sex sounds, he seemed annoyed/interrupted. During his breakdown he could hear the distorted sounds while suffering, possibly associating the two. Emotions, love, and sex seem like the antithesis of what Max wanted to be so maybe the possibility of being touched or the reminder of human emotion via the sounds disturbed him?

    i just saw this yesterday and this is my review
    This movie is the perfect portrayal of how things like meaning purpose value or reason of just about anything imaginable could lead to a very debilitating obsession.
    I found it to be equal parts suspenseful thrilling and on the edge of my seat type of thing. It is a smart well crafted movie that touches base with quite a few themes.
    It is definitely a movie for intellectuals. To me it accurately shows the hardships of having a mental disorder. However I was trying to figure out what kind of mental disorder the main character Max has. It also shows how repetitive self-isolation or seclusion isn't exactly healthy.
    It is a little bit repetitive in some ways however I guess it was just trying to make a point..
    Now this is one of my personal favorite movies as it touches base with number theory Fibonacci, and religious themes such as Kabbalah. however this video helped me understand it a bit deeper. totally watching this movie again in the future.

    Fantastic analysis. There are still 2 things I can't understand in this movie.
    1. Who is the man on the subway? The one who is singing and then disappears, and then is seen again with the newspaper, then following Max? I assume this man is a hallucination caused by paranoia, but not sure.
    2. What's with the ants everywhere in his apartment? Is this a reminder of nature? Again, they seem like a hallucination as they are crawling around inside his computer and on the brain he is already hallucinating.

    Hi Lucas, outstanding explanation and review of this movie. Do you know what Sol has tattooed on right hand? Looks like a skull and a crown? What was the several jabs symbolize? I worked in Electronics for over 30 years and I never wore a mask. There is a lot of symbology going on here you think? I can read Hebrew and have studied Hebrew Gematria. The 5 1/4 floppy disk that the Hasidic gave to Max written on it was the was Genesis 1:1-8 these first eight verse are filled with tons of Gematria and Codes. The Hasidic mystics are trying to bring in the Messianic era with the ciphered coded numbers from the Hebrew letters of Genesis 1:1-8. I believe the mystic Rabbis are getting this Idea from when Moshe asked Gods to reveal Himself. God then revealed the creation of the Universe by passing by Moshe. Just my thoughts. Don’t you think it coincidence to our day of Max giving himself jabs and the wearing of mask while plugging in this Chip? His girlfriend is called Devi pretty darn close to Devil. I’ve never heard of a chick named Devi? Did Max take 6 pills 3 times? 666 I don’t think that I’m reaching out.

    God told Adam in Genesis that we now have to eat from the Tree of knowledge of good and evil all the days of our lives. It also says his people perish from lack of knowledge. Man is divine only because he has intellect compared to the rest of the animal kingdom you can think of divinity like a vine thats growing, basically man can blossom like a flower. That movie is sort of based on real stuff. I have no idea if the Jews really are looking for a 216 digit code but there's a book out claiming it has that number. This stuff is based off geometry mostly. Pi is about lines and circles and much more. It's a very numerological movie.

    I can relate to this film. Not a genius by any means but I wish I was dumber so I could tolerate humanity.
    Knowing too much is painful.

    Theres actually a massive pattern the movie follows that no one seems to have found except me. I can't find anything about it online. Let me know if you are interested and I can show it to you. I tried to link it in another comment but it seems to have been flagged as spam. It basically makes every review of the movie invalid (in a way).

      @@diorsqipe1361 Oh wow I replied to this yesterday but it looks like it got flagged. Ok so basically theres this idea that theres something wrong with the sound. Its mentioned in various places, interviews and such with Darren Aronofsky etc. Now you know the guy in the subway who is singing? He leaves out a line in the song, and check the poster he is sitting across from. This is a massive clue (unless of course im insane). Unfortunately I can’t link you what I’m trying to show you. If you reply to this I will try once again to see if I can find a way. You will have to let me know if you check it out though. Actually I will try it here. Go to the website with the first three letters of “computer” after the dot at the end. The website starts with the first letter of each word in “Ordinary Day Year Second Ear Envelope” then add a slash to the end and type “DSOPi”. Let me know if you got that.

      @@e1ghtSpace why did you make the video you made

    • @e1ghtSpace
      @e1ghtSpace 2 года назад

      @@Placedmat I was trying to copy “The Dark Side of Oz” (search it on youtube). But when I did it to Pi it seemed to sync way too well and then I realised that would fit in with the story of a mathematician trying to find patterns. Then I noticed a bunch of weird stuff in the movie like the guy on the subway singing a song but leaving out a line about the moon, and he’s also sitting across from a poster of the moon.

    neat analysis, but why do you speak like there is a new sentence every 2-3 words, alsways with the same emphasis as well, its kinda comical.
    14:33 for example, "such a connection. is not suited. for humanity. this is why. we see him banging. and scratching." etc, it kinda drives me nuts since i cant really focus on anything else, but otherwise great video

    Humans will be gods sometime. Aronofsky touched so many beautiful ideas in his movies but he cannot find anything else than trite resolutions like the Icarus myth. Well since then we built rockets that can go to other planets. So disappointing.

    I disagree with the assumption that the golden ratio means the universe was designed. We invented math to interpret and understand things. It's not like math was already around and we discovered it, or that there's literal code in everything. We're just using it to describe what we're seeing.

    i just saw this yesterday and this is my review
