These are excellent rules. I use them all. My very favorite (also the first one I learned)
is “Get rid of everything that you don’t know to be useful or believe to be beautiful “.
A whole bunch of memorabilia went into file 13 as a result of that one.

Oh dear! I have just been doing ‘final stages’ of declutterring for the last three months! It just hit me - if it has taken me three months to declutter my craft projects and books, how long would it have taken me to actually complete all those books and projects!!!!!

I apply a "30 days rule" when I declutter and decide to sell stuff. If it's not sold in 30 days I donate it. It's actually useful for me to keep two bags in my cellar. One is for clothes i don't use and the other is for the rest of the non-clothes stuff. This way I accumulate the objects that will be donated in one place, so I can bring those to the proper donation centres only once a year without having to go through all that stuff again to separate it.

Im doing a digitising project too, but its not safe to have only one copy- cloud if you must, but also on either a usb/ drive synced in case of emergencies. Speak of emergencies- i rarely see people doing the basics of a emergency bag, even minimalists. I would really like to see a minimalist take on emergency response/ prep

Hi Seve. I have my own method for impulse buying. If I see something that tickles my fancy, I "cart" that item. I don't buy anything during the month except food, medication, and sundry items from the pharmacy. At the beginning of the month, I pay the rent, THEN I have 3 days, to decide whether I "want it or need it," after having been carted weeks prior. If I don't make a purchase by the 4th day, then it stays in the cart or I delete it from my cart. At least I try not giving in to my want list any more.
I have a shelf which sits on my Window AC box, (the AC is in the window until the fall). over my dressers, which holds all the clothes I wear on a daily basis. In the dresser is underwear, sox, winter gear, sweats and the 2 pair of pants I own. I have an assortment of shirts in the closet, that are 4 season interchangeable.
I tried the "Selling stuff I want to get rid of." What a waste of time and effort, because nobody wants to pay for anything, but they will nickel and dime you until you either relent, or de-list that item. Shoes/boots on the other hand are big sellers. After not being able to sell anything from my closet, I donated them or trashed them. We have a shoe tree behind the front door to stack shoes and boots. If we need to buy shoes, for some reason, something must go to make space in the tree for the new shoes.
I keep the 1 year rule for all clothing. The way my closet is organized, today's clothing is to one side of the bar. Yesterday's clothing is on the other. There is a clear delineation of the two for that reason. So when I do my winter changeover, I get to donate everything in the yesterday side. Because I know neither of us has worn anything from that side of the closet. I donated all my extra or smaller sweaters last Fall to the building. I can use that extra closet space for storage of things piled up elsewhere. (We only have 2 closets) Our protected balcony is our storage unit, where I keep all my Storage Bins, of files and things we need to keep. We don't use our balcony.
I have 2 sets of bath towels, for when I do laundry. 3 sets of sheets, that I change every 14 days. And a few beach towels we keep for emergencies. Our bedroom closet is the catch all for everything we need to store away behind a door that closes. The front door closet has luggage, Christmas tree/decorations, and winter coats and hoodies.
I cleaned out the kitchen a long time ago. We have 1 set of every day dishes and utensils, that sit in the dish rack. I bought a new set of dinner dishes last Christmas, when I trashed the 20 year old ones that were chipped and broken. I have 1 holiday dinner set of table settings which sit in the cupboard until (Thanksgiving and Christmas). That is the only time we use them, because we can sit 6 for dinner, if we so chose. I dumped everything in the cabinets we don't use. There is more food in the cabinet than dishes now.
With Winter coming in Montreal, we stock up on storable foods, can goods, pasta, sides, etc. Because if it snows, getting my cart to the grocery store is a nightmare. I cannot carry multiple bags the distance I need to walk, so if I cannot cart, and I need food, I can walk to the mall, and take a taxi back home.
So the cabinets are stocked, and if I need to shop, it is for food that we need to either cook or freeze. We have a spot where we keep bottles and boxes of cans, and other kitchen goods that are stock items. We usually get three days notice before a snow storm, which gives me plenty of time to shop, before the dump happens. The plows won't plow anything until a storm ends, and it may take up to 4 days for everything to get cleaned up, after a storm, so we have Winter food contingency plans in place.
Apps? What are apps, I don't use apps (he he he he he). My phone rarely rings, and for the most part it is a Pod Cast and / or Music Player, when I leave the house.
I just turned 57 on the 31st of July. My husband is 5 years younger. He needs those $300.00 ear buds, I have a pair of wireless headphones I bought on Amazon. All his clothing has to be altered before he will wear them. He is more attached to "things and Items" than I am. So if I declutter anything, I need to be home alone, to be able to get rid of it without a fight.
In the Winter, I can layer any of my shirts over a base layer, or thermals. Like I said before, my wardrobe needs to be 4 seasons. Getting things to donation sites in Montreal is a nightmare, and we don't have those "drop boxes" anywhere in the downtown area I live in. The clothing I donated to the building on the last run, months ago, was fruitful. And what things nobody took, just went into the trash. I wasn't going to bring them back upstairs. This is my minimalist life right now.

Your system for impulse buying sounds very organized and smart - way to keep those wants in check 😉 I totally get the struggle with selling stuff; it's always such a hassle, especially if they cost $5-10 so the return is not even that good. And yeah, winter prep in Montreal sounds intense, we don't do it that much here in Finland but definitely everything gets more difficult and dangerous when it comes to snowy and icy roads 😄

One thing my mother taught me, about scissors, she is an old seamstress.. If you cut your hair, nails, paper etc, the scissors will be useless as fabric scissors. And she is right, or vice versa. I even got my grandma's kitchen scissors, Fiskars, to take care of... fish bones or...whatever

For the "only touch everything once" rule I have a different approach. I like to keep a box, where I put all items I am thinking if I should get rid off, but I am not certain of my decision for some reason. I just put those in the box and then I will see in the next days, weeks or months if those really were needed. It helps me to make easier decisions.

Sounds great! Yeah I did a similar experiment with clothes and it worked wonders. I could try something like this with everything else too in the future. Thanks for the idea 👏

Maybe the best practice that I've learned from minimalism is the one in one out rule. 😅. Whenever i bought something new, i must take something out from my possession.my son had so many clothes he outgrown and once i buy new clothes for him, i would take all of his old clothes. What's good is i donate it to those kids in our area and it soo good seeing them smile at me. Donating your things is sooo heart warming. ❤

I definitely dont agree with a lot of minimalist content on the "only have one"- basic prep/ survival rule of "two is one, one is none"
Yes have an intentional inventory, though i struggle with the assumption of privilege of being able to buy something if you need it

    • @SunnyKindJourney

I think keeping basic emergency items is super important and part of minimalism - it declutters your mind when you know you are covered. I think this is important especially in places with hurricanes, earthquakes, etc. But with for example hiking boots, earbuds, or laptops, I definitely don't need more than one. Hope this clarifies my thoughts🪴

Yes. Donate your decluttered things fast before I start to have second thoughts 😂, Oh, maybe those shorts are not so bad, or maybe I can wear that dress with a belt so I don't look frumpy. No, no, no, honey, they are going away 😂.
