My father was an orphan, raised by his aunt and uncle, during the Great Depression. Money was always tight, so "fancy" candy was a rarity, usually only at the holidays. When he became an adult he would always buy a Whitman's Sampler box at Christmas, just to remind himself of where he came from. He's been gone thirty years, but I still buy a box every year in his memory.
When cleaning out my grandmother's apartment in the 80's, we found an old Whitman's box that was actually a tufted cloth lid, printed not embroidered. It was full of buttons and assorted sewing things just as you suggested! Right on Kate! Nice to see Little Debbie! I like Russell Stover best, especially their special holiday treats.

Russell Stover brings back childhood memories. There was an elderly gentleman who worked in the same office my mother did. He took a liking to my little sister and I after we met him. So every Friday he would send us a specialty box of Russell Stover creamy mint chocolates. He did that for many years all the way up until he finally retired in his late 70s. We loved the candy of course, but his kindness was the more important part, as sis and I both still think of him today, some 50+ years later!
Love seeing mom in the videos. My 12 and 16 year old often ask me which of them is my favorite. I tell them it constantly changes. My favorite child is the one that minds me the best! 😊

Russell Stover's dark chocolate coconut candies are my favorite. There used to be a Russell Stover store in the town I went to college in, Abilene, Texas. My best friend/roommate's parents would ALWAYS stop there on their way into town to visit, and bring us a huge goody basket. It was the best! We also always loved getting the peppermint patties. We have store here called Dollar Tree, where you can find a lot of Russell Stover candies, and just a huge variety in general, such as boxed candies like you'd get at a movie theater, and older candy brands, and it's all just $1.
Glad you and your mom got to try both and compare the two. I can't have either because I'm a diabetic now. Luckily both companies make sugar free as well. I still prefer Whitman's but like both. Ironically I received your British box just today. Take care...
I have a smaller Whitman's Sampler in my kitchen right now. I keep one around for a treat when I need it. I love both, but the Whitman's is my favorite.

If you ever get a chance to try it, Russell Stover has the best sugar-free candy. They make it with Stevia. I love the coffee, coconut, and the pecan turtles. So delicious!!
I'd pick Russell stovers. My mom worked there when she was pregnant with me. I made her crave milk chocolate caramels and dark chocolate truffles. Both one of my favorites. It's for a special place in my heart. I've got memories of my mom wrapping me up in her old blue company coat when it was cold out or I had to wait for her in the store when I was little
I hate to tell you guys, but Russell Stovers bought out Whitman’s candy company in 1993. Whitman’s has been in business since 1842 and 1 of the best selling boxes. My Dad used to love Frances Farmer's french chocolate mint. Russell Stover's bought them out many years ago. We used to have Frances Farmer shops in our malls here during the 80's and early 90's.

My grandmother used to keep her buttons in a Danish cookie tin. We also have heath bars here thats toffee in chocolate and Toblerone which is chunked up toffee in chocolate. I love the cremes and chews in the Russell stover. They do vanilla, strawberry, orange, lemon, coconut, raspberry, chocolate, molasses, and peanut butter I do believe. And I love them all
I’m a new”ish” subscriber and have been really enjoying your videos! For me, the Whitman’s is tradition. It was always on my Grandmas table at Christmas, so seeing that yellow box brings back tons of happy childhood memories. My brother and I would always claim the Raspberry Jell (jelly) chocolates which are, sadly, no longer in the boxes. I think the only reason why Whitmans is more expensive than the Russell Stover box is because it contains more nuts and not any creams.
This was a great video and it was nice to see ur mom on with you! I love the Russel Stovers boxes! They have different varieties and my fave are the creams but I love them all. Whitman’s is good and I like the fact they make a sugar free box.

Always liked Russell Stover's better than Whitman's. My mom loved it when we gave her a RS gift box for Mothers Day. You can get specific gift boxes like all dark choc candies, all milk choc, nut centered boxes, etc. All gift boxes had diff beautiful flowers on them.

🌹🌹🌹🌹 :-) LOL....I use an old Whitman's tin to hold some hair clips and scrunchies. When I was little my grandmother used to work at the Whitman's factory and she would bring home a big 5 pound box of Whitman's candy in a plain cardboard box (no Whitman's logo or anything). It was the candy that was "defective" (scratched up or squished) so it couldn't be sold. Now I prefer Russell Stover, but I sure did love getting that giant box of candy as a kid.

You like it! I love to hear the "mmmm that is good" It might be a Southern thing, I don't know, but Whitman's was a more nostalgic thing. My grandmother, even when she was quite poor, would manage a box of Whitman's for her 3 daughters at Christmas and we grew up with a sort of reverence for them... the Messenger Boy is strictly a Whitman's product... I think he is carrying a HUGE box of Whitmans! I remember us (there were 10 of us kids) sitting around the table at Christmas, waiting for someone to open the Whitman's so we could see him... so, you see, they have a lot of nostalgic value, I think. In another century, when I was in England, I loved the chocolate flakes!
I grew up in New England and Russel Stovers was always the pick in our family. My all time fav is the Roman Nougat. But there are loads of other really good specialty chocolate brands.
One thing I have found since big factories started making chocolates is they make them way too far ahead of time, stored away somewhere for far too long and yes Kate, they taste like cardboard. Since the Whitman’s isn’t as popular as Russell Stoffer they probably sit around longer. Russell Stoffer sells out much quicker here in Canada. I prefer the newer bags with individually wrapped chocolates as well but maybe that is because they are often made with caramel , marshmallow and pecans, all my favourites. I always prefer Russel Stovers over whitmans. And I agree with the single packaged stuff, how it usually tastes better. So fun getting to see you Mum on here again! I know this weekend is Mother’s Day in America, so sending love to your mum! Even though yours is in March and come and gone 🤣 but always worthy of sending love and kind wishes. Also, we use Royal Dansk butter cookie tins for sewing stuff at your grans! I would always get excited to get cookies and open it to sewing crap 🤣 kinda like going into the fridge for butter and every butter container holds something different and not butter 😩🤣 oh how I miss all my grands!

Kate you hit the nail on the head with the idea that many Whitmans boxes end up as sewing kit boxes. We also have cookies that come in tins, the tins are often used as sewing kit containers once the cookies are gone. Oh the disappointment when you would go to your grandparents house and see a box of chocolates or tin of cookies in the living room, rip it open to discover a sweing kit. 🤣

BTW - Somebody probably said this, but I haven't read the 500+ comments, so here goes from a girl who grew up near Philly consuming mounds of HERSHEY (I know ... ) and Whitman's candies. In 2014 Lindt & Sprungli, manufacturer of premium quality chocolates worldwide, acquired Russell Stover Candies and Whitman's Candies. The RS company and Whitman's were not made by the same company or even part of it. They appear on the same website because they are all owned by the Lindt now. Years ago, Whitman's was the less expensive more affordable candy that appealed to the "family" with larger boxes and the handmade design style box that many buy for Christmas because they would go farther, but the classic box was to draw the Mother's Day shopper. The RS candies always were more premier wherein they cost more and were given on Valentine's, Mother's Day and anniversaries as specialty gift wrapped gifts. RS candies also have more variety in boxing whereas Whitman's pretty much gives everything they make in one box. There is more of a hand picked type selection with RS candy, where you don't have that option with Whitman's. Both companies make a selection the other doesn't, so the best advice we give is buy them both! 😁🌹🌹🌹 P.S. ... and yes, people collect Whitman's boxes and store things in them because they are deep, especially the tin ones. I've yet to store anything in a RS box, but that won't stop me from getting their candy. The individually wrapped holiday ones are fabulous! 🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹
I agree with your Mum, the orange chocolate is usually one of my favorites. However, I also like the molasas chew from the Whitman's sampler. I haven't really found the chew in other chocolate boxes. And yes, the Whitman sampler boxes are often used to store sewing items in- I have also seen them used to store crayons and markers.
My Grandmother worked for one of the candy companies in Chicago during WWII. She could distinguish each chocolate in the box just by size , shape . and the style of swirl on top.
I love Whitmans. Milk chocolate messenger boy is only Whitmans, the molasses is my absolute favorite. On the website, you can order a box of only the individual flavor that you like. You can order a box of all caramel and it is inexpensive, and you can pick milk or dark. Also, a couple of days after every holiday, Russell Stover has an category called outlet and they sell all of those amazing individual holiday candies for half the price.
I’m in my early 40s. And I always try to get the super large box that’s bigger than the box you have in the video. It usually cost around $20 around Christmas time.
I made it to the end when your mom said it's not as good as the British candy. I live in the States and I have a friend I meet on a video game that lives in the UK. He sent me some candy from over there and I TOTALLY agree with your mom. British candy is SOOOOOOO much better

Growing up as a young girl, I would buy my mom a box of Whitman's for every holiday, she loved them. I like both and her favorite was the "fruit and nut caramel", my favorite was were always the nut clusters and the coconut. One year to play a little trick on my mom I moved all the chocolates around in the box, so every time she picked one it didn't match the description, we had a big laugh when I finally told her about it. As a diabetic, I now prefer the Russell Stover's Sugar Free Chocolates ... they are delicious. Haven't had a Whitmans in many years as mom has been gone now for many years, but I bet it would be fun to open one up and reminisce again. I do think that for many years Whitman's was the better chocolate, but over time they got a bit waxy so I believe that the Russell Stover's are the better chocolate now. It was fun to have your mom joining you for the tasting... she should join in once in more often.

🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹 I love Russell Stover! I live in Kentucky and their caramel has always been a favorite of mine, but I wouldn't buy the particular box you guys had. I would most likely buy the caramel one. I like the box you guys had well enough, but it wouldn't be my favorite or first choice. Also a lot of our Russell Stover boxes don't have the rose on them and just have the brand name and maybe a picture of the chocolate. So they usually don't look more retro. They do some special looks for certain holidays sometimes. 😊

My Dad used to love Frances Farmer's french chocolate mint. Russell Stover's bought them out many years ago. We used to have Frances Farmer shops in our malls here during the 80's and early 90's.

My grandmother used to keep her buttons in a Danish cookie tin. We also have heath bars here thats toffee in chocolate and Toblerone which is chunked up toffee in chocolate. I love the cremes and chews in the Russell stover. They do vanilla, strawberry, orange, lemon, coconut, raspberry, chocolate, molasses, and peanut butter I do believe. And I love them all

I’m a new”ish” subscriber and have been really enjoying your videos! For me, the Whitman’s is tradition. It was always on my Grandmas table at Christmas, so seeing that yellow box brings back tons of happy childhood memories. My brother and I would always claim the Raspberry Jell (jelly) chocolates which are, sadly, no longer in the boxes. I think the only reason why Whitmans is more expensive than the Russell Stover box is because it contains more nuts and not any creams.

This was a great video and it was nice to see ur mom on with you! I love the Russel Stovers boxes! They have different varieties and my fave are the creams but I love them all. Whitman’s is good and I like the fact they make a sugar free box.

Always liked Russell Stover's better than Whitman's. My mom loved it when we gave her a RS gift box for Mothers Day. You can get specific gift boxes like all dark choc candies, all milk choc, nut centered boxes, etc. All gift boxes had diff beautiful flowers on them.
That’s so cool you can get specific boxes and love that they do different flowers on the front!

🌹🌹🌹🌹 :-) LOL....I use an old Whitman's tin to hold some hair clips and scrunchies. When I was little my grandmother used to work at the Whitman's factory and she would bring home a big 5 pound box of Whitman's candy in a plain cardboard box (no Whitman's logo or anything). It was the candy that was "defective" (scratched up or squished) so it couldn't be sold. Now I prefer Russell Stover, but I sure did love getting that giant box of candy as a kid.

It might be a Southern thing, I don't know, but Whitman's was a more nostalgic thing. My grandmother, even when she was quite poor, would manage a box of Whitman's for her 3 daughters at Christmas and we grew up with a sort of reverence for them... the Messenger Boy is strictly a Whitman's product... I think he is carrying a HUGE box of Whitmans! I remember us (there were 10 of us kids) sitting around the table at Christmas, waiting for someone to open the Whitman's so we could see him... so, you see, they have a lot of nostalgic value, I think.
In another century, when I was in England, I loved the chocolate flakes!
I grew up in New England and Russel Stovers was always the pick in our family. My all time fav is the Roman Nougat. But there are loads of other really good specialty chocolate brands.

One thing I have found since big factories started making chocolates is they make them way too far ahead of time, stored away somewhere for far too long and yes Kate, they taste like cardboard. Since the Whitman’s isn’t as popular as Russell Stoffer they probably sit around longer. Russell Stoffer sells out much quicker here in Canada. I prefer the newer bags with individually wrapped chocolates as well but maybe that is because they are often made with caramel , marshmallow and pecans, all my favourites. I always prefer Russel Stovers over whitmans. And I agree with the single packaged stuff, how it usually tastes better. So fun getting to see you Mum on here again! I know this weekend is Mother’s Day in America, so sending love to your mum! Even though yours is in March and come and gone 🤣 but always worthy of sending love and kind wishes. Also, we use Royal Dansk butter cookie tins for sewing stuff at your grans! I would always get excited to get cookies and open it to sewing crap 🤣 kinda like going into the fridge for butter and every butter container holds something different and not butter 😩🤣 oh how I miss all my grands!

Kate you hit the nail on the head with the idea that many Whitmans boxes end up as sewing kit boxes. We also have cookies that come in tins, the tins are often used as sewing kit containers once the cookies are gone. Oh the disappointment when you would go to your grandparents house and see a box of chocolates or tin of cookies in the living room, rip it open to discover a sweing kit. 🤣

BTW - Somebody probably said this, but I haven't read the 500+ comments, so here goes from a girl who grew up near Philly consuming mounds of HERSHEY (I know ... ) and Whitman's candies. In 2014 Lindt & Sprungli, manufacturer of premium quality chocolates worldwide, acquired Russell Stover Candies and Whitman's Candies. The RS company and Whitman's were not made by the same company or even part of it. They appear on the same website because they are all owned by the Lindt now. Years ago, Whitman's was the less expensive more affordable candy that appealed to the "family" with larger boxes and the handmade design style box that many buy for Christmas because they would go farther, but the classic box was to draw the Mother's Day shopper. The RS candies always were more premier wherein they cost more and were given on Valentine's, Mother's Day and anniversaries as specialty gift wrapped gifts. RS candies also have more variety in boxing whereas Whitman's pretty much gives everything they make in one box. There is more of a hand picked type selection with RS candy, where you don't have that option with Whitman's. Both companies make a selection the other doesn't, so the best advice we give is buy them both! 😁🌹🌹🌹 P.S. ... and yes, people collect Whitman's boxes and store things in them because they are deep, especially the tin ones. I've yet to store anything in a RS box, but that won't stop me from getting their candy. The individually wrapped holiday ones are fabulous! 🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹

I agree with your Mum, the orange chocolate is usually one of my favorites. However, I also like the molasas chew from the Whitman's sampler. I haven't really found the chew in other chocolate boxes. And yes, the Whitman sampler boxes are often used to store sewing items in- I have also seen them used to store crayons and markers.
My Grandmother worked for one of the candy companies in Chicago during WWII. She could distinguish each chocolate in the box just by size , shape . and the style of swirl on top.

I love Whitmans. Milk chocolate messenger boy is only Whitmans, the molasses is my absolute favorite. On the website, you can order a box of only the individual flavor that you like. You can order a box of all caramel and it is inexpensive, and you can pick milk or dark. Also, a couple of days after every holiday, Russell Stover has an category called outlet and they sell all of those amazing individual holiday candies for half the price.

My grandmother always had a Whitman's box. She would always leave the Whitman's messenger boy for me. Even though it was listed which one they were, my sister and I bit the bottom corner of the chocolate to see if we wanted it. Oh, want memories!

We were really mixed. Some of our faves were Russell Stover and then some Whitmans! They need to make a mash up box haha
Growing up as a young girl, I would buy my mom a box of Whitman's for every holiday, she loved them. I like both and her favorite was the "fruit and nut caramel", my favorite was were always the nut clusters and the coconut. One year to play a little trick on my mom I moved all the chocolates around in the box, so every time she picked one it didn't match the description, we had a big laugh when I finally told her about it. As a diabetic, I now prefer the Russell Stover's Sugar Free Chocolates ... they are delicious. Haven't had a Whitmans in many years as mom has been gone now for many years, but I bet it would be fun to open one up and reminisce again. I do think that for many years Whitman's was the better chocolate, but over time they got a bit waxy so I believe that the Russell Stover's are the better chocolate now. It was fun to have your mom joining you for the tasting... she should join in once in more often.

🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹 I love Russell Stover! I live in Kentucky and their caramel has always been a favorite of mine, but I wouldn't buy the particular box you guys had. I would most likely buy the caramel one. I like the box you guys had well enough, but it wouldn't be my favorite or first choice. Also a lot of our Russell Stover boxes don't have the rose on them and just have the brand name and maybe a picture of the chocolate. So they usually don't look more retro. They do some special looks for certain holidays sometimes. 😊

I use the boxes for organizing once I’m done with them. I even made a jewelry box out of the Whitman’s box once for a graphic design project in uni.
