Of all of the potential leaders behind Kim, Kim is the most Western, the most well educated, and frankly the easiest to read and manage. Even Kim's sister would be much worse than having to continue to deal with him. So taking him out would yield a more dire predicament, assuming it didn't just start an actual war on the peninsula. The issue we have is that he's being heavily influenced by two things: 1. China and Russia are rattling swords. Russia is in active combat with Ukraine, who is being supported heavily by the West, and doing okay-ish. China has recently said they will be taking Taiwan (back) in the very best future. So North Korea is certainly going to listen to and support this effort. 2. The Western response has been slow and fairly weak. Not only has the West been slow but we've had a lot of trouble showing any sort of unity. Simple decision making has been difficult. Kim certainly sees this as an opportunity that is, at the very least, worth probing/ testing and quite possibly worth exploiting.
Real life lore did a video about that recently it's super interesting. I recommend a watch. I think the biggest reason is that at ANY moment, literally any moment, North Korea has artillery aimed at Seoul, South Korea. In a matter of minutes, the entirety of Seoul can be destroyed with just ground artillery. It's scary to realize that nothing can stop it from killing hundreds of thousands if not millions in under an hour without the use of more sophisticated weapons.
