This is weird. I had to do this a week ago to a hinoki cypress because it was so root bound in the original pot and just thought of trying this technique without knowing this was a thing. Then this video pops up on my RUclips. I didnt know it was called slip potting though.
Hey Jerome, Never knew what this was called. Used a similar trick with the same pot recently. Maybe other viewers might find this helpful as well; I've see people cut the nursery pot down to access the trunk of a new tree (seemed a bit wasteful). I recently bought a Hinoki Cypress at a time I could not re-pot. It was the last one the nursery had and it called out to me! Since the pot is larger on the top than the bottom, I had an idea that maybe I could simply elevate the root ball and get the trunk high enough to start picking a front, etc. So, I pulled it out, put Bonsai Supply Soil (love it) in the bottom to lift the tree up. added it around the outside of the pot and used my chopstick as usual around the edges. All without cutting the pot or disturbing the roots. Worked great & gave me access to the trunk without a major repotting. Tree has been doing great with minor trimming. It's outside int he cold, pot surrounded by dirt & wood chips. The goal is to do official repotting and styling early spring before new growth starts. Thanks for all the great videos!

However, I repotted my Hinoki Cypress and did design work (trimming & wiring) at the same time this spring pre-flush and it was way to aggressive. It's gone. Also, I am in Colorado where it is very dry. I kept it outside but buried the pot along with my pines, etc. in a partially shady spot over winter. Really need a protected cold room as the garage is heated.
I bought a juniper from nursery yesterday and assumed it was pot bound. I attempted to lift it out of the pot and about 40 percent of the soil came off. I added some inorganic mix and put it back into the nursery pot. I did a little wiring but didn’t cut any roots. I placed it in the shade and will just wait now. I know junipers don’t like messing with roots even in the spring. What do you think the chances of survival are?
Bob if you start out with a young tree and put it into a small pot right off the bat you will still have a really small tree that hasn't changed much in 20 years time . If you plant a tree in a big wooden box and another tree of the same type in a small bonsai pot at the same time. The bonsai pot tree would need 50 to 100 years to catch up to the tree in the box if it ever catches up at all .keep your trees either in the ground or in a big wooden box and let it grow for a few years maybe 4 or 5 years for the best results all while training it's foliage and root mass which way to grow (you can clip and grow for the foliage and you can spadethe tree in a few places around in a circle to cut some roots and force the tree to grow little feeder roots ). Then once you want to refine your tree put it in bonsai soil mix and use a training pot then you can really start to work on a nice pre bonsai that was grown with the bonsai style in mind from the very start
Alright so I'm just getting ready into bonsai, very very beginner stuff, I got a 4 year old Nana juniper and it has the wires that hold it down, but based on my research apparently that's not very good for the plant, so what can I do?

Hi, I wouldn't recommend to mix sphagnum moss in with the soil. You can use a small amount as a top layer until the tree starts growing again but other than that it isn't necessary.
It's gonna depend on your climate and where your trees are placed on if spaghnum moss will be good to rescue a tree .But most of the time it's not going to work .I've only ever seen it work for one person .everyone else the tree just rots and dies
I’ve been doing this for a while with most of my plants, especially the junipers.

Was this done for demonstration purposes only, or was the pot really too small for the tree? I *loved* the aesthetic of the tree in the small pot.
Personally I think the pot was a bit too small. There was not enough room for the tree to grow.
