She’s always great. I saw her in a great Peter Strickland film called in Red. I’d say Mike Leigh, Jonathan Glazer and Peter Strickland are the UK’s best directors.
@@peteradaniel I think you meant "in fabric", am i wrong ? But i agree, interesting director, that Strickland. Marianne is a wonderful lead in that movie, i agree.
@@FallenTrooperr This is my most hyped film in years and I only found out about it because of this video lol. Leigh has multiple masterpieces to his name.
I'd genuinely watch that movie. Is anyone else's taste going that way lately? I watched that Belgian Here movie the other day and I thought, "Yes. I want movies in which fewer things happen."
I had no idea Mike Leigh had a new film out. I saw these two and thought Criterion must be releasing Secrets and Lies. Then I quickly remembered I've got the Secrets and Lies Criterion (One of the greatest films of all time, btw). Then I googled and holy shit, they're back together for a new film! I am suddenly extremely hyped.
One of my favourite Criterion closet picks I’ve seen. Mike Leigh is legendary and Marianne was so wonderful in Secrets & Lies. It’s fantastic that they’re back together again for Mike’s latest, Hard Truths, and of course for this Criterion Closet. Great picks too.
I just got introduced to Mike Leigh through Secrets and Lies, what a great film! I am excited to check out the rest of his filmography. Marianne and Mike look so good together like best buddies 😁
You're in for one many exceptional moments from a truly brilliant director amd writer. Leigh excels in creating on screen life in all its innate struggles, complexities, harshness but also humanities' decency, compassion, and basic efforts to live through the times we are in. And he does so with warmth, humor, and honesty while casting some of the finest actors of our time.
Mike Leigh and Marianne Jean-Baptiste’s Closet Picks are such a delightful mix of personality and creativity! It’s fascinating to see the meaningful items they’ve chosen and how these reflect their journeys in film and life. Truly inspiring selections!
Love to see this, Criterion! And can't wait to see Hard Truths! The article from a few years ago where Leigh talked about being unable to secure financing for a new movie broke my heart! Thank you for supporting his work. Would LOVE a box set of all his Play for a Day movies 😍 grateful for my Water Bearer Films DVD of 'em but would love to see that "C" treatment 😉
OMG, these two are so lovely together! I need to watch Secret and Lies, by the way. Also looking forward for Hard Truths, loved the trailer! Please do more of these videos with directors and their actors, Criterion!
Haha. Great to see Leigh appreciating Loach. Doesn't surprise me that people have confused then even to his face, sometimes I some of their films mixed up too.
Glad to see the Budd Boetticher Box Set get picked up! Masterpieces of minimalist Western character studies. I can't recommend them enough. Great pick by Mike Leigh.
I love how they don't do the usual thing of taking a few really obscure ones and talking about them for ages, they just go 'oh I like this one, I'm taking this!' That's exactly how I'd be haha!
This is so great. It shows me that anything is possible with Closet guests. For example, seeing David Thewlis in there is unlikely, but not impossible. Oh gawd, David Thewis and Sally Hawkins together would be interesting. Two famous Leigh anti-heroes.
I binged, so to speak, on Mike Leigh films this year. Great to see him here. I recall hearing him on BBC radio 4 talking about Julies et Jim. I had a tape cassette recording of it. I also watched three Cassavetes films this year, coincidentally. I wish Ken Loach and Mike Leigh would avoid using digital colour grading - the soft, homogeneous desaturated colour palette etc, it's aesthetically unsuitable, in my opinion.
They were both BRILLIANT in Secrets and Lies. And to see Marianne now awarded with the NYFCC award for Best Actress for her latest film with Mike Leigh is just so heart-warming!
Two legends! If you've not seen their work (although if you're here, you most likely have), you're missing out! "Where do you start?!" Is the right reaction 😅😅
I wrote my undergraduate thesis on some of Leigh's work. He's the filmmaker who has had the biggest influence on me. I had the chance to meet him when he was doing some press work for "Peterloo" in Dublin, but unfortunately I got the date wrong. One of my biggest regrets.
Wonder couple, indeed. I hope she gets the recognition she deserves for "Hard Truths", although I a torn between her and Mikey Madison this year, I must admit.
I literally (actually) mentioned Mike Leigh to someone in the last 2 days! (But maybe it should have been Ken Loach, haha!) What a great surprise to see him and Marianne Jean-Baptiste!! I love how he was thinking that he's done the Closet once, he won't get much of anything, and they take in the biggest haul I've seen! I also loved ". . . but I still eat meat", "I still eat meat too, let's put that one back"!
Secrets & Lies…not enough superlatives available for that film…so I LOVE seeing one of my favorite directors and actors discussing their film picks! Thank you other commenters for the info re their new collaboration, had no idea!
Criterion Collection. You're on to something. Do more videos of directors with the actors/actresses they've worked with.
Why did you put this in the form of a command instead of a question?
