PARKS is a celebration of the US National Parks featuring illustrious art from Fifty-Nine Parks.
In PARKS, players will take on the role of two hikers as they trek through different trails across four seasons of the year. While on the trail, these hikers will take actions and collect memories of the places your hikers visit. These memories are represented by various resource tokens like mountains and forests. Collecting these memories in sets will allow players to trade them in to visit a National Park at the end of each hike.
Each trail represents one season of the year, and each season, the trails will change and grow steadily longer. The trails, represented by tiles, get shuffled in between each season and laid out anew for the next round. Resources can be tough to come by especially when someone is at the place you’re trying to reach! Campfires allow you to share a space and time with other hikers. Canteens and Gear can also be used to improve your access to resources through the game. It’ll be tough to manage building up your engine versus spending resources on parks, but we bet you’re up to the challenge. Welcome to PARKS!

I think I'll get this for my "games to play with girlfriend" shelf along with wingspan, everdell and the isle of cats. Thanks for your video, I originally dismissed it too.
It's also a game you could play with anyone. Its more strategic than what you'd think.
It really is a good one - I am always willing to grab it!
I highly recommend this game. A extremely thematic lighter small engine building game with a bit of tension. Beautiful game.
Agreed. We enjoy it a lot.
Yea it’s certainly a nice one! :)
This game has been on and off my wishlist so many times. Every time I see the illustrations I add it back on. 😊
XD and we continue the habit of selling you games!
Did you finally buy it? 😉
@@hanslamal5632 I did!
Your channel is destined for greatness. Great quality, unique perspective and relatable hosts. Subscribed!
Thanks so much! :) Glad to have you in the paddle!
This game is what happened when Tokaido and Splendor get together.
I once played this with two of my friends, perhaps during the early days of the nightfall kickstarter, and they completely got hooked. Mainly it's because of the artwork, they say.
All in all, definitely a must buy.
i love this review style.these are the boxes i check when i decide to purchase a game, keep it up
Thank you so much for this analysis! I've been trying to tell if this'll be a good gift for someone who loves Wingspan and visiting parks in real life. I've been hesitant about which of the several parks-themed games out there are actually good and true to the theme of experiencing parks themselves. With traveling still so far away in the future during the pandemic, I think this will be the next best thing! Your video was super helpful - thank you thank you!
I love this right/wrong style of review, thanks!
Great selection of BGM, it makes the presentation very evocative
After creating board game related content, I appreciate even more the time, effort, energy and creativity that goes into making those stunning B-rolls. Viewers cannot imagine how much work it takes to do it so splendidly as you did. Superb job!
I'm still on the fence with Parks because I'm a sucker for great art but have way too many unplayed gorgeous games, haha.
Thanks so much - we try to put everything we can into production! We want to make media that is as easy to watch as possible - it takes time - but I think it is worth doing in a industry that I love!
I like this approach to game overviews. Thanks!
Christian - that is exactly our hope!
I am glad you like the format! We wanted to do something a little more conversational!
Great job guys. This format of video is awesome for us board gamers on the fence. Just bought it!
Yeah! We're so happy we helped you reach a decision!
Nice! We think this format is pretty cool XD
Great overview, thank you guys for taking the time and presenting this game to us in such a detailed manner. (Special thx for the attention to the innovative section ;)).
Aww thanks :) - We are doing our best to show off everything!!
I am loving the right for you wrong for you series! Thanks so much this game looks like a good one!
I am glad you are enjoying them! We love this series as well :) - The game is lovely!
Just got my kickstarter copy and expansion today. The memory game wasn’t for me but the original seems right up my alley. Can’t wait to play!
when it came on kickstarter, i was on the cusp, but i'm a fool for aesthetics... and in retrospect, i am SOOO happy i backed it.
opening it, learning it and playing it... it felt like christmas came early. THIS is my personal number 1 game of 2019.
That’s amazing :) - it really is such a nice game! I am glad I found it eventually!
Loved the video! You earned yourself another subscriber :) Just a thought though. It'd be helpful to have some sort of text or title card over on the side of the video where the viewers can see the topic that you guys are talking about. That way if anyone tuned out for a bit they can jump right back in to listening at your guy's great insight. Or maybe if we missed your discussion on the innovation of parks we could find that discussion again quickly. Looking forward to your future videos!
Thanks so much! Glad to have you as part of the paddle :) - the trick with text or title cards is they take another significant amount of time to edit and insert - I try not to do most everything in camera (I just like the way it looks) - we normally do time stamps (when we can catch up with them) so that’s our typical solution for your request - I will admit we are behind on those due to how busy production has been this last month. We should refocus on them!
Love the way y'all go about your videos. Keep up the great work, second video watched and I am a fan.
P.S. Those ducks need horns.. 🙃
Thanks so much - we will keep up the work :) - We are really enjoying what we are doing!
P.S. - we know - trying to figure it out.
I made the same mistake not backing this when I saw it on kickstarter! After it came out I thought it looked so well produced, and your beautiful cinematography has just emphasised that :) Thanks for doing this Right for you/Wrong for you! You've pushed me over the fence and I'm going to go see where I can get my hands on this haha.
Nice I think a lot of people did that as well! If you can find a copy I don’t think you will regret it!
The new expansion is on Kickstarter along with the base game being something you can add on
@@sicsided thanks for the heads up! :)
Cool! Didn't know this was back on kickstarter. Backed!
We're glad we were able to point you to it! They totally deserve the support!
Nice! Glad we could show it off :)
You guys make well produced videos and i hope you all do well in the market.
Thank you, Jacob. Jesse works really hard. I'm happy that comes off through our videos! I hope you can check out some of our other stuff!
Thanks so much :) - it will do well as long as people find us - you commenting, watching, sharing makes our work pay off!!
OMG! I just found out that this game is in my local shop! And I'm from Poland! :D And thank you so much for that video! I would have no idea that that game exist if it isn't for you :)
Nice! I am glad we turned you onto it - I hope you enjoy it :)
I love this game. My family has a lot of fun playing this.
This game looks great! Thought I would check out your review with the pre-order for the new expansion pack opening Tuesday! Would love a past 2am on it.
I am a sucker for a good theme and nice design. This is why I have Everdell and just ordered Parks - what is amazing in both cases, they are both great games.
If you want an intro/light game along these lines, look into Tokaido. Same vibe (enjoying the journey). Lighter set collection, simple to teach, and pretty.
This adds some elements to make things a little more engaging for non-beginners.
One that I am personally super interested in is Namiji. Can't wait for it! Went with the deluxe edition.
I will have to look into it :) - thanks so much for the recommendation!
This feels a lot lot like Tokaido but with simplified resources and a variable board. Which is absolutely fascinating to me. As much as I love Tokaido for its ability to get my casual gaming friends to try new things, I found that it had a bit much going on in its scoring for new players to feel 100% satisfied with it, while its static board meant that it gets stale quicker than I'd like. This game seems to address those issues.
I love the comparisons to Tokaido! Are you excited for Namiji!?
@@janbigas682 I love Japanese themed games, so yes. My hope is that the game holds up better over multiple games than Tokaido does. I was very sad when I realized that as much as I loved the theme I found myself doing largely the same things every game.
Hmm - I will need to check these out closer - not the first comparison I have seen!
I love how this game looks. I don't own it yet, but it makes me want to buy it. I'm just not sure if it wouldn't be too simple. The complexity rates somewhere between The quest for El Dorado and Stone age.
Btw.. You're doing a great job reviewing this. I subscribed.
This is a great game!!! Components are well done and the art is just beautiful! The strategic approach varies depending on the number of players. But, it's amazing regardless!
Such a pretty game!
It truly is!!
It sounds dumb but seeing the cards for the first time of different parks almost made me cry from nostalgia when I opened the box.
Just looking at the Kickstarter and wondering about it. Awesome timing (not a coincidence but good move :) )
Oh, what do you mean? There's a Kickstarter going on now? Man, how lucky... ;)
Nice! I am glad we helped give you some more information!
I played this game roe the first time with my boyfriend at a board game meetup and we instantly decided to buy it for our personal collection.
I like this game a lot. I’d love to play it more but unfortunately the day has only these many hours 😭 I was able to get it last October and I only played it three times 😭😭
The only one complaint I have on this is the insert: it’s great, it’s neat and elegant and the log-shaped resource trays make it a breeze to ready it for play, but the moment you decide to sleeve cards, it all falls into pieces because the card trays are precisely cut for non peeves cards. Nothing will ever fit if you sleeve cards and unfortunately you shuffle them all: parks, gear and canteen cards.
I have to admit I was a bit worried when handling the cards during my plays; that might be a factor that keeps me from playing the game as much as I’d like 😕
If they’re planning a reprint with the Parks Memories KS campaign, it would be awesome if they decided to increase box size to make the card trays compatible with sleeves (in all three dimensions)
Its definitely an important consideration! I'm sure they decided to keep the box size small. But my heart would break if something ever happened to those cards too...
I can totally understand the desirer to sleeve these cards - however I like that insert so much I don't know that it bothers me. I could see a big box being a nice upgrade one day - but I will take a nice inset over sleeves :)
I am the crazy type that would just get a second copy to keep package safe - and play the hec out of the first one (since sleeves cost a good bit on their own)
"I play this just to win." I know you were kidding here, but if you ever do a Q&A I'd love to hear from everyone who plays games on the channel, "Why do you play games?"
Hey! We have actually talked about doing a cross interview of each other sometime! Were we answer these types of questions :) - stay tuned!
Dismissed this too so thx for this video pricing is a bit too high i think but gonna pick it up anyways . And when is the first qauckehickingboaedgame holiday available ? I’d like to book two seats pls
Do you have an evaluation of the Memories version? I’m interested in the artwork, but I’m thinking that I might get that version to the table more often.
I really enjoyed it - we did not get a KS copy to cover, I was able to play it at tantrumcon, if the media out there looks good - than I would trust it.
I found this game very reminiscent of TOKAIDO. Really enjoyed it.
Yea! Not the first connection that has been made there :) - I need to check out Tokaido more!
Love this game.
And thanks for the great video idea. I hope to see more of these
Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment :) - it’s a great game!
I just found this game, pretty much brand new with all pieces at the thrift store for $4...researching in how to play now 😍
4 dollars!!! Wow nice score!
Hey guys, can you help me out here. You mention very early on that 1) this game is currently on Kickstarter. I assume you mean “Parks”. Then you say 2) “Parks Memory” is their newest game. Is this a different game entirely, an expansion to “Parks”, or a second addition that includes both “Parks” and “Parks Memory”, Thanks as always for your great vids!
As a Canadian I’d like to see a Parks Canada version!
some owners of this game take the cards to parks they visit and get the official park passport stamp of that park on the card.neat idea.
This game is great!
So when is the “Quackalope tours America” tour?
I played TRAILS first, and I liked it. And now I’m looking at PARKS (I own it , but haven’t played) and it just feels needlessly big, with twice as many components and cards and rules for a lot of the same feel. Is it worth it?
My copy of the game has removed the words from the card backs and just uses iconography, so that may take a bit to get used to
It's definitely right for me. The game looks fun and would be a great addition to my collection. But here's the thing, do I want to buy it? Let's put money aside for the moment, what's important to me, and probably a lot of others, is the investment.
If you have too many games or too many similar games that don't get played often, buying more is just bad. Sure, if I bought this game, and it hit the table a bunch, it's worth it. But if I it's just another set-collection game to add to my ... collection, then that isn't a good reason to buy it.
So what I'd like to see in these videos, if possible, are other similar games and how this would fit into a library that owns game X, Y, Z from your perspective. How's this play differently from similar games I own like Tokaido and Kanagawa? For one, it's American and not Japanese. But then what else? What does this have going for it that the other games I own do not? Tom Vasel often compares games to other games, and I find that very valuable. I'm not saying you have to be The Dice Tower, but I'm only getting if the game's right for me.
If you're going to add price, I'd like to see your thoughts with comparisons because if similar game X and Y don't hit the table often, Parks probably won't either unless it does something fundamentally different with gameplay or theme. And in this case, the theme is extremely similar to Kanagawa and Tokaido if only an American take. So after I know the value of the game in my collection with my board game groups on my table(s), then price comes to play. If I think I'll get 2-3 plays out of it, and it's $20, that's different than $50+ with expansions. Hopefully that makes sense. A price to me is nothing without context; although for some, the price itself is a hard limiter.
Nice - thank you for taking the time to respond :) - I think this is a fair and important question to ask! The hard part for us is honestly depth / perception of the game space as a whole - I still feel like I am catching up on titles to play in a lot of ways (and I played 260 unique games last year) - I think this is something you will see more of as we grow in our experience!
Hey there ;)
Hey buddy! Doing my best to catch up on comments :P
There is something to be said about theme integration and how difficult that can be to find. I'm not sure I'd consider it "innovation" per se, but it's rare enough that I'd say it's pretty unique.
That is fair - it is a conversation worth digging into. I think it can be innovative when it is done to this degree - however it is not a reworking - it is just a new implementation of theme!
First game (kinda sorta)
Quack! :)
I think I'm picking up your voices on each others' mics, and they're just slightly out of sync. It's giving this strange stereo effect with the audio even though it's mono. Maybe the mics are just really high quality and my ears aren't used to it.
What's going on with it sounding weird to me?
Not sure to be honest - the Mic is a single shotgun mic in the room - so no cross contamination :) we have only one main source. Might be a bit of room echo?
If you can - check out some other videos - let me know if you hear the same issue?
@@Quackalope It's less pronounced in Oath Ep1, but it's in the other ones too. I probably haven't noticed because I was using my Microsoft Surface tablet's speakers, but I also used a pair of IMEs on it as well.
Tonight, I'm using headphones on my desktop tonight, and it's uncomfortable to listen to your videos with this setup. I tried a different pair of IMEs, and it's less problematic, but I can still hear it now; maybe because I'm aware.
It could also be that the mic is too far away or not turned up enough. It's definitely pretty loud, so my only thought now is mic distance.
Even with volume, certain mics I've owned don't sound good too far away from the source as if you're listening in a glass jar.
Me trying to come up with what's wrong probably isn't as helpful as explaining what it sounds like though. I'm just throwing ideas out there from my inexperienced ears.
Only reason I brought it up is you asked (in one of your older vids) for us to denote anything we see that you could improve.
@@Quackalope Quackalope It's possible the issue was on my end. I had it set to 32-bit and 192kHz in the Realtek audio configuration on Windows.
I clicked "reset" which went to 24-bit 48kHz (my tablet's on 16-bit 48kHz), and it's less noticeable. Also, turning up the volume seems to help too.
It's strange though. I only noticed the issue once I started watching one of your videos on this machine. Never noticed it with the other RUclips videos I was watching. In fact, it was pretty sudden when I clicked your video that I noticed something different in the audio.
@@Saturn2888 Hmm - thank you for letting us know! I hope it is just because we are fancy and not because we are messing it up!
I'm not saying everybody needs to go all JonGetsGames with their review structure,
but it seems you are constantly jumping back and forth between your opinions, some game rules and arguing about
whether I as a viewer need to be told if I might light it.
What I got out of this review... “um hum, yeah”
