    Not much wrong with this A3. Gorgeous interior, space for humans in the rear and a good boot. Those lights are amazing. You demonstrated the smoothness of the gearchange perfectly Matt. That 1.5 TFSI is something else. I wanted my mate to try it in his 2019 Golf but he went default diesel. I just know that this will be sharper without a big diesel in the nose. Thank you very much this was a treat.

    Not sure about the technology built into newer cars, especially the touch screen controls. It seems there is too much to distract the driver. I do however like the digital dash for the fact it configurable to the way you want it. Nice looking car but for me the jury is out for some of the tech.

    This is something that me and Ed from Twin Cam were chatting about on Twitter the other day, how cars now are all just the same colour inside, the matt black and grey colours (i know there is shiny black in here too) and how cars now are pretty much devoid of coloured interiors. Remember when cars had brown, blue, cream and even green (Volvos) interiors. I do like some of the safety features in these and being an Audi you can expect those features and the infotainment centre too. It seems to handle well and has enough grunt to move it around easy enough. The fronts on Audi's seem to be getting angrier and angrier with every revision, soon it will just be the hulk face on the front ready to smash any car in its way lol. Seriously though, i do like some of the styling ideas it has like the aluminium strip across the dashboard and the screens for the dials making them plain and easy to read, also i like you can configure the dash to how you want it, which is a good touch. I dont like how spare wheels are becoming an after thought now, i think they all should have one still even if its only a space saving one. Couldnt they fit it under the seat or something? The boot looks a good size too. Great video as always and im liking this modern mondays theme too.

    Great review sir! It would be great if you could get your hands on the Mazda3 hatchback with the Skyactiv-X engine mated to a manual, to see how it compares wit this A3 you had. Keep up the great work!

    • @AdamCalow
      @AdamCalow 3 года назад

      I can help there as I test drove a 35 TFSI A3 and the SkyActive X in a CX30 (albeit both mated to auto boxes). I found the Audi much better to drive as it has more torque at low revs. The SkyActive needed to be revved higher for decent acceleration. That’s a big reason for me choosing the A3 over the Mazda. (That and the fact that the S-tronic gearbox in the A3 is silky smooth and in a different league to the conventional auto in the Mazda.)

    All the new tech in cars these days is a bit marmite, plus when most stuff goes ''wrong'' the car needs to go to a dealer for repair / inspection, and most of us will be fully aware that ''most dealers'' are run badly and take the utter piss on cost.
    Still feel ''ALL'' cars should have a spare wheel, not having a spare wheel for me is a deal breaker and the lack of spare wheels is purely a car manufacture cutting costs.

Can’t touch a mobile phone on the move obviously, so why do they fill modern cars with screens, touch or otherwise, to gawp at while driving? Hate all the technology and gadgetry in modern cars. Over complex and impossible for ordinary home mechanics to fix. Peak automotive, for me anyway, was about 20 odd years ago. But it's a nice car for people who like all the new tech. I own 2 Audi's and worked on them for 20 years but I would never buy an Audi after '04/'05. Ok i will admit to a bias. As the owner of a previous generation (type 8V) S3, the interior of this new model does not look as special. The infotainment screen looks to low, below normal line of sight when driving. The type 8V has a screen which motored into view when the car was started and was slightly higher than the instrument cluster. The control buttons and dials have a nice 'haptic' feel. The eyeball air vents had volume controls which are controlled by aluminium outer rings, again nice haptically. And the facia and door inserts are genuine aluminium. My example also has dynamic cruise which works down to 20mph, useful in town or city traffic, it's a S tronic. Full park assist, B & O sound, and a panoramic glass roof. Oh and it came with a spacesaver spare wheel. The new model seems lacking in ahem sensory pleasure. The new model seems to be a victim of cost cutting disguised with shiny 'piano' black plastics. And no i don't feel tempted to change.

      I have a pre face lift 2016 8V RS3, with every factory option except carbon pack and ceramic brakes, i bought it when i could have got a FL version, but I don’t like the digital dashes or aluminium engine blocks, hey were tinkering with things to lighten the front end, when all they needed to do was change the rear anti roll bar
      As with most versions of car, the original usually remains the best and purest version, like many of the Quattro cars before it, the RS cars will become iconic and sought after for many many years

    • @AdamCalow
      @AdamCalow 3 года назад

      The adaptive cruise on this latest A3, when paired with the S-tronic gearbox, works down to 0mph and will automatically stop and start in stop-go traffic. The control buttons do have a nice haptic feel, as do the air vents and the rest of the switch gear. And you can spec a space-saver spare wheel as a relatively low cost option.

    I like the look of the new A3. But all is not what it seems.....Its easy to be mistaken thinking this is a new model, however many of the components like all the switch gear for example, are the same as found in nearly every other VAG of the last 20 years. Its also the same car underneath too. The Golf and A3 haven't altered in years......if this was a Rover or other British car, the critics would say its a dated design and point out that its not been updated in years.
    I think VAG are the masters of facelifts.

    I'm normally one to say Audi's are boring and the reason Audi drivers always overtake or tailgate you is that they either want to look at something more interesting than what they're sat in or they are speeding to reduce the amount of time they have to drive such a boring machine. However, this A3 is actually really well styled and quite nice inside. All be it, the all-black interior doesn't really give it justice. You nailed the styling in one word, Matt: bulky. It certainly is. That gaping maw of a grill does it no favours, either. It comes across, like so many new designs, rather as if the design inspiration were a Panzer tank. Trouble is that the materials are fragile. The end result is a clunky design that is not going to age well at all nor will it stand up well to the rigours of the local car park.

      Yes the grille may be a little bulky but it does fit into the design as a whole, but have you actually seen the grille on the front of the new BMWs? Looks like they saw a 1969 Pontiac Trans Am and simply stole the nose off it, that was never going to look right was it?

      Like I've heard before. You should never buy an Audi. You should lease one so you can give it back when it starts to go wrong.

    And when you try to use these controls on the move you drive into the back of the vehicle in front. This is a car for geeks and not for getting from A to B. To me it's an awful interior. Wait until it goes wrong and you'll be b......d Obviously it will drive fantastically.. I recently borrowed a car a little like this and I was confused. I touched something accidentally and no way could I get back to what I wanted!

    Your argument for autos vs manuals continues - it was mentioned at least four times in the video! Let's face it, this is probably the last generation of A3 to offer a manual box. But with the price bracket this car sits in and the type of people that drive these, a manual is really only going to be selected by a die-hard enthusiast. UK drivers are beginning to prefer automatic gearboxes and the death of the manual is shortly upon us.

      Modern autos are easier to drive, faster and more economic than manuals. The final nail in the coffin for manuals will be electric cars.

    It's a grey car in all senses. It seems claustrophobic, specially, in the back seats. If this car could be compared to a music system, it would be a 90s low cost flashy stereo system. In comparison, the first series A3 Sportback (FSI engines), would be a refined and reliable Hi-fi system from the 70s. Somethings don't get better...

Piffle on piano black while we're at it, and really reaching out there bring back the executive class sedan with a stick - I still remember my twin turbo 2.7 A6 6spd fondly. Finally, completely betraying my anti-modernist leanings, where are the damn cd players?

      From what I read on the car forums the early cars had electrical / software problems. The later cars seem to be better, though there are still some software bugs to be ironed out. The golden rule nowadays seems to be not to buy a new model in the first year.
