A short clip showing the metal custom formwork that we have designed and made for ramming a wall with door or window openings in place in a rammed earth dwelling.
The forms can be re-used - in fact one set has done our whole house with 20+ openings and still going strong.
Can be adapted to openings of nearly any size. We designed our house to utilise the same forms over and over.
i.e. The largest sliding doors used an upright from a door opening and a form design for a pillar. This meant much smaller investment in forms.
We do not claim to be experts - quite the opposite. We research, learn, then trial and error. With Rammed Earth, we have now rammed well over 600 face square meters of wall which includes retaining, re-inforced retaining, underground walls, house external and internal walls etc.

Best rammed earth tutorial/presentation I have seen on RUclips. Thanx for this. I look forward to more of these. Could you make a video about how you form for corners? Thanx in advance
Thank you! - Yes we will show you at least two ways to form up corners. We are working on getting some more videos ready!
Thanks, mate! One of the best instructional videos on rammed earth around! Cheers!
Thanks heaps! Glad it was helpful. There will be more coming but happy to take requests too as we are doing a few more smaller projects and adding to the house :)
Best video on rammed earth work explained work with beautifully. For these type projects every one worried about doors and windows openings where you explained it Technical supports for doors and windows. Thanks for making video. And very good work from video man.
Thanks a lot - my 7 year old was happy to hear his camera skills were appreciated!! 🙏🏼
Thank you for explaining the parts that other videos skip over 🙏🏻
No problems! We will be adding many more educational / instructional videos as part of a rammed earth course shortly.

Thank you ❤ @@WildEden
Oh, you blokes have systemised it so well, the only thing I’d do different would be to coat your form work for easy release and refurbish it after each use. Top marks. Ever think of using permanent pre-cars concrete surrounds for doors and windows?
Yes mate we often use form release (some people use diesel) sprayed on to the forms just before ramming. It can help with cleaning and gives a more flat finish.
With concrete pre-cast we haven't used that for doors, mainly due to cost & time of preparation - it could look nice though.
God job 👌🏽.. So how about earthquake or rainy seasons 🤔?
Thank you! We have a video planned for products we use and sell for water repelling: we will add to the list earthquake discussion. Rammed earth can be a great choice even in earthquake zones but there is a difference in design.
Engineering for this is vital.

Detailed info, Thank you !!
Glad it was helpful!
Very nice construction.
Please can you share the calculations made to determine the quantity of earth, cement and sand ?
One of best detailing video about rammed earth
Thank you - subscribe for more videos with tips and instructions coming soon!
Thanks heaps for sharing very useful tips 👍👍
No problem 👍
Thank you bro
I like that a lot man... nice approach... crazy those openings hold weight, but I guess you have to trust it haha
Ha ha - yes you're right.. The first few we did, we were pretty nervous walking on top of them! Over time & after seeing how much they can hold we trust them now!
We will be doing a full chapter on infills & reinforcing etc - it's pretty clever & easy when you know how!
Nice work and sound technique. What about the holes in the walls, do those get filled in, or is that part of the aesthetic? Thanks again for the presentation--it definitely resolved some questions for me.
No problems at all - and Thank you!
if you subscribe for more videos with tips and instructions coming soon (including what we do with the holes)!
Thank you
That is f-king clever!!!!!! 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Ha! Yes we thought so! 😉
Great presentation, simple and full of information. Please will you do a clip on how to do form a corner. Do you have a website where I can get an idea of equipment to purchase?
Yes we will do a video of the corners for you.
We will be uploading detailed videos soon

Hi mate I have really enjoyed watching your videos very good tips on doors and windows forms could you tell. Me how you go about putting second floor beams what do recommend wood beams steel? Is it better t make pocket holes to house beams? Would love to hear from you take care body
Glad you enjoyed! We will be discussing 2nd story buildings in one of our videos. There are a lot of considerations.

Good idea to use light gage for the blockouts. Clean. Good presentation. I am always looking for better options for window bucks. How do you attach the window? In the other openings one can see a recess. Thank you!
G'Day! We made our openings flat so the windows and door frames could be attached directly.
We will try to upload more videos of other parts of the process and the products we use/d to attach securely. If you subscribe you will get notifications of when we finally get to upload more :)
Thank you very detailed presentation would you take on anyone for a hands on learning approach and oh i have subscribed and surely dont want to miss any of your videos
Thank you! This is something we are looking at doing at some stage. There is only so much you can learn from videos / study - hands on is needed for sure! Stay tuned we will advise once this can happen!
Thanks for your video...Wondering what exactly you use as the pins -- how do I create them... and also how do I access your rammed earth course?
Great video production I just keep asking myself how can the walls be tested for loaded weight
You can have the strength of your mix measured by drilling a core and getting tested. We highly recommend to get your mix right and have tested before starting.
We will be posting videos on all aspects of rammed earth and maybe a full ‘course’ once we hit enough subscribers. Be sure to subscribe and share to help us!

Brilliant work mate!
Do you put horizontal Reo bars in the
Window heads?
Thank you!
We are hoping to do a video shortly for the re-inforcing and window infills. Be sure to subscribe to get notifications!
What about roof ??
Can you make a vedio for it ? without wood plz , concreat or earth
Thanks
Yes we will be showing you how we did the roof once we get all our videos edited and uploaded. Thankyou!!
Where are you, I want to come and observe you in action AND watch a fit-out. Have you ever done “in-floor” heating and cooling?
Do you have anchor or anything to hold the window frames?
Thanks for the video, but how do you deal with those small holes on the walls?
Hi Jubal,
It's a common question, and we plan to post a video showing you how we did it...
Make sure you subscribe & invite your friends. We will be soon posting lots of videos covering a lot of info on Rammed Earth / Stabilised Rammed Earth. In fact, we may offer a full owner-builder course of sorts!

@@WildEden I'd be interested in the owner-builder course for sure!!
AH!
MY QUESTION! :D
nice work and explanations... one question do you thing the strength of rammed earth could allow it to carry a A-FRAme roof/house on top. I mean could it act as a load bearing foundation if you do a rebar splice to connect to the A frame?
Do you mean as a second story? Depending on the design you can easily do it.
We can show you how - be sure to subscribe, once we hit 1000 subscribers we will be posting regularly.
Hi it's looking good; may I know what kind of structural support you give above the window or door opening for the rammed wall; I meant in lintel level. Thanks.
We will be uploading detailed videos soon including details about the construction above the windows (Infills).

Another question, don’t know if you can answer, do you do “rammed earth stabilised blocks” if so, have you ever tried gluing them instead of using mortar? I ask this because about 15 years ago I built a shed using concrete blocks and gluing them, it’s as good as the day I built it! I’m thinking of building a house using the rammed earth stabilised blocks, including some vaulted roofs for verandahs and other parts, using glue?
Sorry, we do not have experience with blocks... Essentially recon limestone blocks are similar. It is a totally different way of building - our guess is that cement is needed for structural integrity. An engineer would need to give advice.
What do you have on top of the door or window? Concrete slab? Can you share the process in a video? I think that’s important otherwise the wall on top of the windows will collapse as they bear weight.
G'Day!
It's a common question - and no we don't use concrete above the openings. It's simple and very clever - yet engineered to be strong.
We will have a couple of videos covering this exact topic.

What do you do with the holes from the pins? Or will you plaster the walls either from outside or inside?
We filled the holes after the walls were rammed and have designed them with colour so they look unique - we would hate to think of hiding them under render! You could do that if you wanted to though.
This topic will be covered (and some plans to help!) in our rammed earth course we hope to put together. Part of it will be regular videos on our website and RUclips etc. We just need to fund it and have injury to work through.

Could you use a gas powered vibrating plate compactor for larger jobs ?
Generally plate compactors are too large physically and vibrate too quickly. A backfill tamper works best...also known as a ‘dancing lady’! 💃🏼
-"We use (and sell) a product that makes the wall resist water."- I am interested in you product (water resistant). Is it used after the walls are rammed or mixed within the soil prior to ramming? Best regards from Ciudad Juárez in the Chihuahua Desert (Northen México)
We sell two products: 1 that goes into the mix to be rammed, the other gets sprayed or rolled on to the finished wall.
We will share more details soon!

@Diego Lopez, we are working on it...if you can share our channel around it will help us put it together faster!
thank you :)
Can you put a rough cast coating of cement for finishing
Yes you can render the walls afterwards if desired, however if you are creative with the ramming process, the walls will look beautiful and you don’t need to render.

Am really interested in rammed earth building, is there any advice you can give me. What are the down side in building with rammed earth
If done correctly (in design, material make up and method) I don’t see a down side.
what happens to the walls when there is serious rain or flooding?
Hi Michael, we use (and sell) a product that makes the wall resist water. In fact, due to the death of a family member, our walls were out in the weather for over a year before the roof went on without issue.
If you don't use this additive when mixing the earth, you need to keep direct rain off the walls with verandahs etc.
There is another product we sell that can be applied after ramming - again we sell it and will explain more in another video...
If you subscribe we are hoping to get more videos up shortly explaining more :)
@@WildEden wait you mean the rammed earth buildig has a problem that caused a fatality?

@@WildEden No worries, I liked it 😂
What kind of lintel if any did you use?
G'Day!
It's a common question - no lintel above the openings, but reinforcing is needed.
It's simple and very clever - yet engineered to be strong.

What is an "acro" and an "acroprop"?
They are adjustable metal support poles can be seen in the breakfast bar opening. Great for supporting all kinds of projects.
@@WildEden Thank you!!!
Can you give an estimate how much you saved if it was with cement?
Sorry I don’t understand what you mean by ‘if it was cement’.
Wild Eden is this purely rammed earth? Or rammed earth and lime?
Do use a lintel in the windows and doors?
No - we will explain what we use inside the walls for the infills above the doors and windows in another video. Be sure to subscribe for lots of tips coming soon!

why are there holes in the wall. plz exlain
*
That is from the pins that hold the forms together.
If you subscribe we will be adding videos that explain further.
All those holes just ruined the look of the wall. Nice window and door forming but there are better ways that will give you beautiful looking wall,.
Thanks for your opinion. We fill the holes afterwards, helping hide the holes.
Invested all your money into the copyright did you? Could've at least kept a 5 buck aside for a bloody mic... Neat work tho, will credit you on that
Let the positivity flow!! 🙃

GREAT! thanks
How do you deal with the holes in the wall?
The clamping systems avoids that but it seems more tedious.
We have a video on this that we hope to have uploaded as part of our full rammed earth course.

🇩🇪 Germany in the house I have a question
can you put lime in RAM Earth walls
instead of concrete
