Mike, your videos are very interesting and informative. Please could you do a video about how to tell if a Victorian book is first edition. Also what is your view of horizontal storage. Thanks Rob & Claire

Good idea Rob & Claire. I'll get onto that. Thanks for commenting

Thank you for your very helpful tips - especially no Sellotape. I do have one particular book which has a partially ripped spine and has become very loose which you may like to cover in your videos.

Good info, thanks! I actually have one book I'll go grab now... 'The World Before the Deluge' by Louis Figuier, 1872. And... I can't tell. I have to wonder if that's real gold gilting (embossing?) on the rather simple cover. As for searching online, looks like the original was French, then published in English, and then even republished in a 'new edited' form, so technically 2md or 3rd, and I can't find any year beyond 1872 in it, the year of that edition, so maybe a first impression... for what that's worth.

One can usually tell real Gilt if it remains shiny (after all those years). Not so much of it around now though...
