I am in the second year of Sapienza's IMS and I am 23 right now. I was one of these people who worry about being too old to start medicine and i would be one of the oldest in my year, but in reality... just a year later, I have already forgotten these fears! I am actually in the younger range of students and this shows how much diversity there is in our course! There are people from all over the world and people after their mid-thirties and everyone is friends with everyone. No one is making fun of you for being old or young. It's actually the opposite, since the older people usually have more experiences to share and also most of the older people hold at least one bachelor degree, so you understand that in this course there are smart and well educated people. So if age is your worry... just dont worry!
I'm 36 and I wrote the IMAT this year. I graduated with a BSc at 30 and a technical diploma at 28. Age is but a number if you want to do something in life.
@@AcadIMAT Will post about results/acceptance after 7 nov, when universitaly posts the universities' selections. What a long and strange journey this year has been.
That's nothing. I'm starting my medical school journey at the age of 37 (been an ICU nurse/paramedic for 12 years). Strongly considering school in parts of Europe. I just got out of debt during the pandemic thanks to travel nursing and I'm looking for a more economical means of earning a medical degree. I just wish school wasn't 6 years in duration there, but I suppose that's a fair trade off with the reasonably low tuition.
I will be 33 or older when I have enough saved to study medicine in Italy. When I read old and then you said starting at 23, I LOL'ed. Thank you for your videos! I traveled and had fun in my 20s. I will finish my nursing degree in the US this May at 29. Sometimes I think about my age, but the truth is that we will be getting older whether we are working toward our goals or not.
You know the other thing about being an older student? think about the VALUE of what it means to have some life experience under you. How much more you'll be able to empathize with your patients instead of looking down at them and wagging your finger. Thank god for a life well lived prior to medicine! @@AcadIMAT
I like your philosophical kinda perspective regarding to the age factor. Hoping for getting into medicine in 2024 at the age of 21. Thankyou Very much for giving confidence to people like us.
Man honestly look up the top regrets of dying people, almost all of them say I wish I didn't work as hard or as long. What's the hurry to being miserable and overworking 😎
Im 21, and aspiring to become a medical student and graduate from Italy. I’ve been watching a lot of your vids, they’ve helped me tremendously especially this one! Great work doc keep it up.
You give me so much hope, Serra ❤ You saved me from my quarter-life blues🥺 a little back story: I actually completed a few years of medical school back in my home country but couldn’t continue due to a political crisis. Now I’m pursuing a different interest at a foreign university that is more financially doable for me at the moment. I still do have firm intentions to return to medicine when I become financially independent. Though I started med school at 16, here I am: almost a decade passed and not a degree in hand. 😂 I’ve been thinking a lot about my age these days and whether I might have to give up on medicine completely. But your video gives me hope ❤ I’m 24 now and hopefully might get to start medicine after saving up … so prolly at 30. 😅
Thank you a lot for this! What I usually find it strange is that the idea of age seems to be an issue for some people only when it comes to medicine. I always hear about people going back to school later in life to study different majors and it's never an issues, in fact it's considered impressive. But some how only medicine shocks people. Although as you mentioned it has higher retirement age than other professions, so it should be the opposite lol.
Controversial, but I think it's because medicine attracts a lot of try hard types. Part of being a try hard is having to over achieve on things, and I think people are aware that there are going to be people who are "perfect" so feel inadequate if they haven't been perfect achievers their whole lives.
Actually I would say that in Germany, where I come from, it's quite the opposite. Due to Medicine being so hart to get in, a lot of people start it quite a few years after they finish high school. Two guys from dorm will be older than 30 when they graduate medicine, and still they said that studying medicine was the best decision they could have made! I guess its hardly ever too late to make a change in your life and follow your dreams!
I also want to add that it doesn't matter how many time you have been trying to pass the entrance test. It doesn't matter at all even 10 tries won't do any difference later
Thank you for ur video❤ Much needed . I have been going back and forth with pursuing medicine for 3-4 years now. In my late 20s now , I keep thinking because I am married and it would be a little harder. Since it is 6 years as compared to 4 years in the US where I currently live. ( but that would save me like 160-200k usd). Do you happen to know any stats on which school has more diversity in terms of student age range? or which is the most friendly school for older students? Thanks Do you know the stats
I am going to sit the IMAT in 2025 to get into Torino as an older student. I was born in 1989 and am almost 35 years old. However, throughout my life, I was berated for being 'too old' for a lot of goals. It did not help that during all of my 20s, I was physically and mentally destroyed due to several illnesses, which is why I am in this situation I'm the first place. My question is, for someone at age 35 going to begin Medicine, what tips would you give to brush off constant negative or mean comments from others about how old one is? I have always had problems with comparing myself with others, since where I was born and raised, the San Francisco Bay Area, it is not only totally common to judge and compare yourself with others, but it is also almost compulsory in society here. For example, what would you do if someone had a 'best friend' would tell them that they were a loser for beginning Medicine at age 35?
I levelled up and became happier, Italy could try to take credit for it, but I like to think it's wisdom and reading books about how short life is, and how to make the best of it 😎
Thank you for sharing this! I'm 24 now and just wrote the IMAT this year after being just 2 points short last year (I'm non-EU). I must say thoughts of being too old definitely creep up more now 😅

@acadimat (university of bologna) vs (biccoca), please tell which university is better academic wise. City wise for me both are better than the rest of italy. But academic wise?
I want to know if it's easy during the semester to travel back home or smt? I heard that you only have to attend 2/3 of the class, does this alo go for labs or hospital days? Thanks
Well how far back is home? If it's in Europe yeah it's very easy to hop back and fort, but if you need to travel half way across the world, realistically you'll only be able to twice a year max. If there are mandatory labs and hospital days yo umust go to them, or talk with the professor to make up the days you miss.
I did the IMAT 2023 a few days ago and completely missed out on the second half of the chemistry section (It was under my draft papers) and only discovered it when the invigilators said its time up. I got 31.3 points from the exam and im EU 22 year old, if I found the missing paper I would have gotten like 38 points. Hopefully 31.3 is enough to get into some unis.
