the writers of New Vegas did their homework when writing Joshua and Daniel. Joshua represents the old mormon cult; reclusive, philosophical, and hyper violent. The horrible atrocity that was the Mountain Meadows Massacre is something the Legion and the White Legs would consider a master stroke of strategy and war. But to any sane person, would consider it a slaughter and murder of innocence. Joshua represents that church and the years following it. Daniel represents the modern church; Philanthropic, spirtual, and reserved. Still capable of violence, but ultimately horrified of its usage and embarrased by the past. Daniel finds both Ceasar and Joshua a disgrace to his faith. And a tarnish on his church. Ceasar is Brigham Young, violent, polygamist, and territorial. Joshua is John Lee, the mormon officer who conducted the massacre and would later on face judgement for it and eventually be executed for the crime. What we see, despite his name, the Burned Man is ultimately a different character in that he represents John's children, who in disgrace took the purpose of reclaiming their family honor by serving the church and the american government where possible, repairing what damage they could, trying to erase their father's stain. And Daniel represents a very specific modern church leader, Elder Henry B. Eyring, who along with church President Gordon B Hinkley, conducted a ceremony at the burial site of the victims with the descendants of the survivors present. They apologized and begged for forgiveness. Eyring said in his speech: "We express profound regret for the massacre carried out in this valley 150 years ago today, and for the undue and untold suffering experienced by the victims then and by their relatives to the present time," Elder Eyring said. "A separate expression of regret is owed the Paiute people who have unjustly borne for too long the principal blame for what occurred during the massacre," he said. "Although the extent of their involve- ment is disputed, it is believed they would not have participated without the direction and stimulus provided by local church leaders and members." Lonesome Road is about tackling your demons, doing what is necessary, and accepting responsibility for your actions. When the time for judgement is called, you will answer for your crimes, that much is garunteed, so you might as well settle your soul and do the right thing as often as you can. Forgive your enemies, and beg for their's. And protect the innocent if they won't.
Profound regret isn't exactly an apology or even close to making amends for the actions taken. Expressing profound regret doesn't show that you accept your responsibility to your actions. It says that you're sorry that you feel this way not I'm sorry that I did this.
Joshua is easily top 3 best characters of New Vegas. His incredible lore, matched with his dialogue and mannerisms make him undeniably intriguing. Truly a genius level character that was performed magnificently by a fantastic voice actor, Keith Szarabajka. Fallout New Vegas is aging like a fine wine thanks to all the unbelievably intelligent minds that went into it. Decades from now, people will still be playing New Vegas. Mark my words.
I have mighty need of Fallout Colorado to have Joshua Graham return or referenced. Plus Colorado has a few radiation related stories that could fit the lore of fallout well, like the Plutonium Rocky Flats Plants fire or the Popcorn Lung case that happened in 2012.

A very keen lesson for certain world powers in that last point.
Hardest Mormon in fiction
"Dudes be like, 'subway sucks'...
My brother in Christ. You made the sandwich. "
Joshua is the only New Vegas character I respect more than Lanius.
He’d have to be a companion after this. He’s dope.
Imagine if him and The Ghoul ever meet up one day….
I love the Cathedral music from fallout 1 in here
That last lesson, he had to learn it himself the hardest way possible.
the writers of New Vegas did their homework when writing Joshua and Daniel. Eyring said in his speech:
"We express profound regret for the massacre carried out in this valley 150 years ago today, and for the undue and untold suffering experienced by the victims then and by their relatives to the present time," Elder Eyring said.
"A separate expression of regret is owed the Paiute people who have unjustly borne for too long the principal blame for what occurred during the massacre," he said. "Although the extent of their involve- ment is disputed, it is believed they would not have participated without the direction and stimulus provided by local church leaders and members."
Lonesome Road is about tackling your demons, doing what is necessary, and accepting responsibility for your actions. When the time for judgement is called, you will answer for your crimes, that much is garunteed, so you might as well settle your soul and do the right thing as often as you can. Forgive your enemies, and beg for their's. And protect the innocent if they won't.
Huh... my grandpa is named John Lee... I now understand why he prefers to go by his nickname.
I had no idea about any of this and I just wanted to say, this was beautifully put. Thank you for the interesting interpretation.
Its truly wonderful to enjoy a game for this long and still learn to love it deeper. Much appreciated for the history lesson.
Hauns mill and Nauvoo taught the church what happens when they put their fate to chance.
Profound regret isn't exactly an apology or even close to making amends for the actions taken. Expressing profound regret doesn't show that you accept your responsibility to your actions. It says that you're sorry that you feel this way not I'm sorry that I did this.
The ambient sounds fit so good with Joshua Graham
That lost point is such a fucking line “waging war against good people is bad for the soul”
One of my favorite side characters in a game
“Courage is fear that has said its (final) prayers.” - Karl Barth
“He who kneels before God, can stand before anyone.” - Unknown
Why killing me is a bad idea? Well, you need salvation
Strictly speaking, he said that killing *Daniel* is a bad idea. I don't think he considers himself to be in the category of "good people".
Imagine seeing Joshua Graham in the Fallout TV series...
Joshua was the ultimate hardass with a good heart
"Daniel will send you to hell. If he doesnt, I will. If I can't, God will."
This man’s voice could talk someone’s finger away from the nuclear launch button.
I have mighty need of Fallout Colorado to have Joshua Graham return or referenced. Plus Colorado has a few radiation related stories that could fit the lore of fallout well, like the Plutonium Rocky Flats Plants fire or the Popcorn Lung case that happened in 2012.
That's a good idea! I'm definitely in the camp of wanting Bethesda and Obsidian to both work on new separate titles. So much good stuff we potentially will never get to see.
"...luckily for you two, i agree with the last point."
This whole dlc is a fever dream….and having only 1 merchant to sell to with less then 10k is evil…..
"Make the first shot count, you won't get a second."

A fair kill
I've never heard these voicelines, Ive never thought about trying to attack him or Dan
I've never heard any lines from any of them aside from online. Only time I played this DLC, some dude ran up to me menacingly so I shot him. Then everyone wanted a piece so I shot them too. Daniel aggroed as soon as I saw him, so he got it too lol by the end of the dlc, I was done in around 30 minutes, didn't talk to a soul, got some map(no clue why) and I was on my way back to new Vegas lol
You hear him say that when you first meet him. There is a dialogue option that basically says what if I just attack you and leave. He then tells you this as a warning.
@@alexkimmel386yeah replay it and don't shoot the guy that runs towards you.
@@alexkimmel386 that's how i play every fallout, free xp from npcs, just like that, boom, finger snap. And they got free on them too, just go in and take everyhing they have.
Joshua means guardian for a reason. You cannot protect people against threats you do not understand.
And unfortunately, to fully understand things sometimes... you have to have done them yourself.
The first time I played the dlc I accidentally shot Follows-chalk because I thought he was another White Leg.
Meaning the entire dlc just became "find a map, kill everything and get out".
Having done all that makes his threats seem a lot less intimidating the second time I played it 😅
My anti material rifle after realizing his face is material
My stealth build + fully upgraded anti material rifle one shoted rawr, I love Joshua but omg he was the one who didn't get a FIRST shot... Then loaded and beated the dlc the way it's supposed to be
Ultimately all threats sound empty and funny when you can become a literal supersoldier. Great for narrative tho
problem is his 3rd curse will happen to you and God will smite you in the end
Daniel is the only one defending the Sorrows against the White Legs, so he knows how to handle a gun.
Imagine if the programmed your gun to jam anytime you tried to shoot Joshua as "divine penance" 😂
*gun jams and you get quickdrawed*
I think he is honestly the best fallout character. He IS the threatening presence.
"no thanks" Joshua when you ask to see his inventory. One of my fav lines lmfao
He is the protaginist in this valley
I love how every dlc pretty much gives you the armour of every influential character in the dlc but everyone’s couriers are just so badass nobody wears the given outfits, cause we got better
My courier is always so overpowered that whenever I do a kill everything run his threats Ring hollow.
his final reason accounts for that. He's basically telling the courier (from experience) that he will regret his actions for the rest of his life.
@@nkoehler337 The part of the courier's brain that held his regrets got blown out
@@TownBiness97 Regardless of the outcome, Joshua believes that the courier will face their judgement. In this life or the next.
@@wastrelperv Well sure, but Joshua Graham doesn't know he's literally just 1s and 0s and I don't think God judges 1s and 0s
@@wastrelperv And Joshua Graham should be one to talk. He committed atrocities with the Legion. His only judgement came because he failed at being a legion general
That last line sounds so important. Like it could tie into something next.
But afaik its just a cool line. He talks it up to be secretly important. And then it just isn't.
He basically just tells you don't be a bad person and keep your karma good.
its because he had a religious conversion after surviving the whole fire canyon thing and now regrets what he did when he was caesar's legate
Third line is probably something of a personal experience to Joshua himself. He had waged war against good people in the past, and it was bad for his soul. It's in a way him telling you to not follow in his previous footsteps.
There's no way....comprehension really is at an all time low.
I hope they find a way to write Joshua into the show.
Gotta give props to Keith Szarabajka for his most excellent delivery of these very well written lines too.
My evil playthrough i think i said something in my head along the lines "i slaughtered your caesar and his legates, mowed down all the fiends, destroyed Mr.House ambition and his goals slaughtered everyone and everything to get here when i send u to your god ask him why...why did he create someone like me to test your faith" then i shot him and he whooped my ass
The end got me.
Clearly didnt make the first shot count
