On the flip side I have became a runner since transitioning to homeworking because I was expected to take on the school run because I was at home. Previously I would have gone to my crossfit gym at 7am before heading to work and the grandparents would handle the school run. I must say though I love walking my daughter to school and the flexibility of working from
Home. Hoping to pick up the gym again in a few years time.

Working from home gives me more time to run as I have saved commuting time. But I do get that for some it may lower their exercise.

Andy makes a really good point that it’s great you can wear almost anything and no one seems to be judgmental in running, compared to cycling where it seems to be a much bigger deal. Just another reason running is the better sport 😉 Great podcast 👌

Some people love running and have zero desire to run a marathon.
Some people lift weights and have no desire to be a competitive body builder.

I am showing my age but thinking about my previous life when I was in high school in the 1960s there were two no-no's that my gym teachers stressed - (1) Always wear white socks since the dyes of color socks will seep into your possible blisters; and (2) If you run you never should swim since you are using different muscles, which would affect your running. How concepts can change over the years. Great Podcasts

There are three other runners in our housing development of about 170 homes. One of them is our son. Another is the wife of a friend and the last is a guy that runs around 5 AM so pretty hard-core. There are far more walkers and dogwalkers than there are runners in my area. About two-thirds of the population are overweight or obese and some fraction of the rest may be runners but I'd not call running as back in fashion in my state. And as bad as this is, we're ranked the 15th fittest state.

I think an episode on body dysmorphia and disordered eating in the elite athletic community would be really eye opening- especially bringing in a male perspective. I follow Phily Bowden, Lucy Davis Fit, Allie Ostrander and Natacha Oceane and all of them admit to having issues around their body image and/or relationship with food previously. It would be a bit more on the serious side so might have to be a stand alone piece rather than a regular podcast episode as the awesome usual banter and humour may not lend itself to the seriousness of the issue. Just a thought 😊

That took me back!

I'm with Andy here. Cycling is all about the unwritten rules and experienced cyclists are not very welcoming to newbies, whereas runners don't care what others wear and are more welcoming and inviting (mostly). I hurt my hamstring running and decided I would use my bike to stay fit while I recover. I asked in a group if a certain trail was a good place to go for a good workout and was welcomed with "don't bring those slow bikes here" and "what's the point of biking if you're not going fast" kind of comments. I got criticized for not owning a $2k bike 🤦🏽

I suspect the interest in ultra marathon might be driven by marathon promoters. London Marathon Events and Let's Do It send me loads of emails encouraging me to sign up for ultra marathon events as well as wild multi-day hill marathons. If you run marathons/half marathons you get sent this stuff on the monthly. Another factor may be writers such as David Goggins 'You can't hurt me anymore' who makes me hungry to push my own limits.

I cycle & run. I think it’s important to make a distinction that it’s been road cycling where there has been an elitist attitude about what you wear but in other cycling disciplines such as gravel & mountain biking no one cares what you wear. Refreshingly I’ve seen a change in road cycling & a push back to the so called “rules”.

I think exercise trends are really cyclical. Whilst companies like Gymshark were popular, lifting was the "thing". As Andy said, Hoka is very trendy now, and New Balance is enormously popular with young people.
I also think, sadly, that image trends have changed and are moving away from "strong" being the way to look, back to "skinny", and cardio lends itself well to that trend. I blame ozempic 😂.

It's taken me a while, but the way I judge how I look and how I run now, is contemplating how I would look at other runners. And 100% of the time, all I think to myself when I see another runner is "Oo you go guy/girl, smashing it. Can't wait to get out later", without even looking or thinking about how they're dressed. That led me to think that, unless you're a real a**hole, you're not judging me; so, as long as I'm not wearing a sarong (because who does that), I think I'm good in my mid-level kit without having to spend a fortune to have a tick embossed on the front!

The idea of staying out in my running kit in front of people terrified me, so when a friend invited me to a running club I showed up in denim shorts with my Oyster card in my pocket in case it all went down hill… Fast forward to today, 10 marathons later, and I have more running kit than regular clothes in my wardrobe 😂
