Andy & Alex you must do “18 and life” by skid row. this is their biggest song along with “I remember you” probably the greatest hair metal song of all time. they are a 80s and 90s band who’s first album was released in 1989. their first album had 3 of their biggest songs. 18 and life was inspired by the guitarist reading a story in the newspaper about an 18 year old who accidentally killed his best friend with a gun. he didn’t know the gun was loaded. the 18 year old got prison for life. the singer, sebastian bach, has an extremely powerful voice which was meant for the song. the range of his voice was incredible and “18 and life” scored #4 on the US charts giving them their biggest hit.
OK, first, Alex you have sleeves ! Don't know Opeth, music is quite good, but the growling, it feels like white noise to me and ruins the song. Do they change the vocals that much in all their songs ? I would suggest some White Zombie/Rob Zombie or perhaps Ministry. Later.
With help from fans, I can now make recommendation. "To Rid the Disease" & "Burden" as a start. There is no growling. The music is beautiful and soothing. So many musical influences happening as well. Peace.
Hey guys. Opeth is a Swedish prog rock band similer to Dream Theater, Riverside and Porcupine Tree. Love what you guys are doing keep up the great reactions.

Welcome to Opeth guys. Lots of depth here with 3 distinct phases of their career. Early opeth is more doomy and blackened, raw production, GoP was made during the years of Steven Wilson producing. Really clean, honed in what their sound was in the field of progressive death metal. Then they dropped the death part entirety and went heavier into a modern classic prog rock renaissance sound with no growls. You should listen to their latest song Dignity. It has won over even many people that miss their death metal days just because it blends their work so well.
Steven Wilson didn't work on Ghost Reveries actually. He produced Blackwater Park, Deliverance/Damnation and mixed Heritage and Pale Communion. But I know where you're coming from. Personally my favorite era of Opeth is the period of Still Life, MAYH and Blackwater Park. The later era hasn't grabbed me much even though I'm a huge fan of classic progressive rock. But i like what I've heard from the new album so far :)
Nice one, guys! There's a lot of cool stuff to be discovered in regards to Opeth (both their old and new style, for this one belonging to their older 'Progressive Death Metal' style). :) Greetings from a German RUclips colleague, love your videos!

Oh, an added information: Opeth sold the crawl to me. DIdn't like it, didn't care for it before, but after I fell in love with their sound by their latest albums, I had to dig in deeper and there I was after a while, not disliking crawling any more.
Think opeth needs a good few listens to be able to give a true score. As with most prog metal it grows on you and doesn’t always hit you on first listen, usually because there is so much going on. I recommend Between the buried and me - Sun of Nothing.
I think most of my top tier songs needed a multiple listening. If a song gives everything it haves at the first time, it's probably not a keeper ;) (Thanks for the recommendation. I've never heard of that band)
Didn't like the growling either when I started listening to Opeth. But after a while I got used to it and started to see it more like an instrument to generate emotions and shiftings in their songs. And you can actually hear the words. And that's not so often the case with growling.
I dislike growls. I love this band though. Firstly recent albums with no growls and then I got into the older style and really got into it. Try harlequin forest live.
I feel bad for this band getting compared to Tool. I'm not into the screaming vocals, but surely it's nowhere near as dry sounding as Tool... Great riffs. Great drumming.
Both are amazing bands, different styles though. Tool is about creating atmospheres and moments within them, in this regard they are second to none. But I guess it is about taste. I love Opeths music, besides I don't like the growling, their music is actually insane. No need to compare them, both are absolutely superb in their styles.
There is definitely more songs you should check out from Opeth. They are really diverse, and I don't know what kind of songs you like, but I would suggest: Harlequin Forest, Blackwater Park, The Drapery Falls, A Fair Judgement
I think a band with such a large catalogue of music such as Opeth can offer various reactions with each period of their career. They no longer do the growls and have had several member changes since Ghost Reveries but the musicianship continues and front man Mikael Åkerfeldt continues to write amazing music. Check out 'A fair judgement' live from London Shepherds Bush Empire for a growl free early track or 'Sorceress' live from Red Rocks or 'Dignity' an early release from the new album. If you liked this song, definitely check out a song called the Leper Affinity, and one called Blackwater Park. You are right that it's an acquired taste. You need to see them live. You will not leave unaffected, whether for better or for worse, you will be affected. I myself am not normally a fan of the growl, but I love the way they work it in. It has its context. And by the way the growler and the singer are the same guy. I'm also kind of surprised at Alex's reaction to the drummer. I think the drumming is very primal. If you ever do go see them live. Take some time to actually watch the drummer. You should also check out a band called Eternal Tears of Sorrow. Great musically, lots of piano, and just the right mix of growl with female, almost soprano like vocals. I recommend a song called Bride of the Crimson Sea.
Ok... Here it goes. Eternal rains will come Serenity painted death Windowpane Hex omega Bleak Most and best diverse list of opeth songs. All are increíble. And good reaction material. All from different albums (Not all of then have growls. Thats why i started with eternal rains will come)
As far as progressive Rock goes, Tool, Opeth, and The Mars Volta are my personal big 3. You guys just opened up a box full of goodies with this one. “To Bid You Farewell” is probably my favorite by them.
Having grown up on Orchid and Morningrise, the middle ground of My Arms Your Hearse has remained my fave. Seeing him play all of Damnation live is a concert highpoint, as well.
Hi Andy and Alex, this post is a little askew to the music video it is attached to, but I thought I'd catch your attention as it is a most recent posting by you both. I want to ask if you have heard of Mike Oldfield and his Tubular Bells? If not, I challenge you both to listen to the original 1973 recording in the best quality you can. I want to draw your attention to Mike because of what Tubular Bells is. he started writing and recording parts of it from the age of 18, and completed it at the age of 20. Tubular Bells was released in 1973 (a very good year for music) on Richard Branson's Virgin Records, it was the record that launched Virgin Records. When Tubular Bells came out there was literally nothing like it, it was utterly unique. A two-sided instrumental record titled parts one and two. Mike Oldfield wrote all the music and put it together and played every instrument you hear. Bear in mind, he was only 20 years old when he released the album. Of course, the music is forever tied to the film the Exorcist (also '73), and I am not sure which project gives the ambience of ethereality to the other? Tubular Bells has an air of 'otherworldly-ness', and like Pink Floyd the theme of the music is flight (of the spirit?). In all of the music genres you have been listening to, Tubular Bells might sound a tad boring to your modern ears, but it really is a work of genius, so much so that Mike Oldfield has never been able to better it. Some will say that he has, but they are wrong. Tubular Bells remains Mike Oldfield's opus, and I think it has proved to be the most frustrating thing about his creativity.
Great stuff guys and very interesting analysis, especially as you actually seem to understand some music theory. With progressive music, especially songs that are 9-10 minutes long it does take a few listens to really put the song together and allow it to resonate. I would recommend Windowpane as it's a more accessible Opeth song but oozes with emotion and feels - seen as one of the best Opeth's song.
I have a Pandora station called Porcupine Tree with the Steven Wilson catalogue. It inserted "Windowpane" into the mix and I was hooked. Now I'm on the hunt for just the ambient/spacy Opeth songs. The Damnation album in on my Christmas wish list!
You need to do Opeth's - "Face Of Melinda" to understand the brilliance of what Opeth truly has to offer. Not the live version. (although it's great) .. but the studio version. Get on it!
@Andy & Alex If you want no growls, you guys should start with the album Damnation. It was also produced by Steven Wilson (Lead singer of Porcupine Tree). Damnation got me into Opeth, but I got into the growls from Opeth's Ghost Reveries album. I'd recommend Harlequin forest next or Moon Above Sun Below (a couple favorites).
Jeez you really dived straight into the deep end with this one! 😂 Very good reaction though and I think there are a lot of bands on this end of the spectrum that you would appreciate. Try checking out Ne Obliviscaris - And Plague Flowers The Kaleidoscope. Think you’d find this one interesting.
First time I've also heard this song. Thanks. (They've just recently released a new album. It's not quite as heavy, from what I've heard). Some of their albums were produced by Steven Wilson. You'd probably like quite a lot of his music. There are less metal parts in his stuff, but great progressive rock (especially later - he got tired of it, I think he said in some interview -- just felt like he'd done all _he_ could do with it). I think him and Mikael Akerfeldt are not just occasional collaborators, but also friends. ruclips.net/video/NBjD8QFtleM/видео.html *The Holy Drinker* . The guy on the guitar is not Jesus; it's Guthrie Govan (but he can also walk on water). There's also some dirty sax to get into.
If you get the impulse to get right outside the comfort zone, a good way to do this is to listen some of the serial killer music of Present, a Belgian group that likes to jazz up the dark side with music you could use to scare the kids in movies. I'd suggest their Jack the Ripper, but you'd probably have had to have acquired more of the taste before trying that one, so I'll suggest *Promenade Au Fond d'un Canal* (roughly: Walk along the floor of a canal - and probably while dead after being terribly murdered). It's also quite nice and discomforting, but doesn't have quite the "in the mind of ... " feel that Jack the Ripper has. ruclips.net/video/TVQgkrFltmM/видео.html Quite a lot of their songs relate to actual murderers, so that might be the case here. The acted part of the stage show might not just be random.
If you'd rather have cute kitten zombies (who eventually drink Draino and slash their wrists - but all in good fun, I'm sure), try this animation Cyriac refitted to one of his favorite Cardiacs songs: *Wind and Rains is Cold* - which contrasts rather nicely to both the cute and the disturbing aspects of the animations. ruclips.net/video/ymKIP7vf0z0/видео.html
I've seen them three times and yes they can do it live, plus Akerfelt's between song banter is hilarious. The death metal vocals are definitely an acquired taste, but he puts a lot more dynamics in them than most folks who do it. I quite like it. He's mostly stopped doing them anymore, the last couple albums were more pure prog and classic rock, i dig their whole catalog though.
Throwback to Boston, listen to April Wine : Sign of the gypsy queen. I was working in a wheat field and 2 hutterites (close to amish) came walking out of no where, beers in hand, because they heard some good tunes playing. One of their favorite bands also. Also, plaguebringer for the heavier selection on the tunes. Thanks for your time and have a good one!
Ghost of Perdition is such a masterpiece and is a nice point of agreement between old Opeth hardcore black metal - doom fans and new casual listeners that like their new and different sound. Nice video!
I've heard this one many times and still enjoy it. I highly encourage you to keep trying the "growling" style. I really think it's worth it as it opens up a lot of amazing music on the heavier side of things. Thanks A&A!
The death metal growls will grow on you. He is a very versatile singer in my opinion. Opeth is one of my favorite bands. They have so many epic songs. I would recommend listening to Burden or Will O the Wisp if you wanna hear their softer side . Reverie/Harlequin Forest is a masterpiece. I highly recommend 🤘🤘
Wow, I have a lot to say about this song. Ok, so at first, I could not see this similarities between Opeth and Tool because of the screamo. But once the screamo stopped and time signature changed, that's when I found the similarities. I love how unpredictable this song is and it's always very satisfying not knowing what's going to happen next. The thing about a song being so complicated is, how do they perform this live?!?!?! Even for Queen, they don't perform the operatic section for "Bohemian Rhapsody" live because it would be too hard to sing the parts live. I'm not really a screamo fan either, I know I like a lot of hard rock, but if I feel like the singer is straining their voice, that's where I draw the line. Also, I couldn't hear the bass or guitars because I was too focused on the drums, who did a fabulous job with the tempo changes. On a more positive note, the piano/keyboard was my favorite part of the song because I liked how it blended in with the hardcore vibe the song had going on. With that being said, great reaction video Andy and Alex, have a good one! :)
Haha i love this....opeth is just on another level of talent, and i love that people ate finally starting to realize that...get past the growls or listen to their last 4 growless albums...they may take a few listens to 'get them' or hear everything in the music, but once you do, enjoy the lifelong ride, cause they steal your soul with melodies that will break any man.
You guys, really... you want something hard, , something that makes you sit up and take notice, something that challenges you musically and emotionally.. The Sex Pistols - whether it be God Save The Queen, Anarchy In The UK or Pretty Vacant... The Pistols are the next big thing in "reaction to" - so underrated, like Queen were before. For God's sake do it, unleash yourselves to musical anarchy. Let's get some thumbs up, I need to see these guys go wild
Ive never really been one for Death Metal other than a few exceptions.... But Once you get past the death growls Opeth are a pretty amazing band. They dont even use Death vocals anymore for the past 3 albums at least. A new album is due end of the month from them. They are now more prog than metal even, but still good imo. I recommend anything from their non Metal album Damnation and when your ready for more extreme try the songs Black Water Park, The Moors or Deliverance.
Best thing to do if you are trying to get onto Opeth, is to start of with their 70s inspired prog rock stuff such as 'Damnation' or even their latest album. Then perhaps 'Watershed' with songs like 'Burden' (first song I listened from them) and then the 'Ghost Reveries' album. From there you might be able to appreciate their trademark album 'Blackwater Park', which has their most heaviest song 'Blackwater Park'. Though some say that 'Deliverance' is their heaviest.
This is def my fave by them, but Baying of the Hounds, Grand Conjuration, and Reverie are awesome too. If you’re looking for a similar-ish band that’s maybe a touch more accessible, may I recommend Scar Symmetry. I wore their debut album out on CD back in the day.
you must do “18 and life” by skid row. this is their biggest song along with “I remember you” probably the greatest hair metal song of all time. they are a 80s and 90s band who’s first album was released in 1989. their first album had 3 of their biggest songs.
You guys should check out Animals as Leaders! Would love to see a reaction video for them. Just don't start with CAFO. I'd recommend Tempting Time, personally.
Hey Andy, Alex, check out the band Queensryche, this is one of their more chill songs, this was their homage to Pink Floyd, you’ll like this one, drop this into youtube search: Queensryche - Silent Lucidity (Official Music Video)
Great song & easily one of my favorite bands. They have a lot of great songs. \,,/_(-,-)_\,,/ Awesome, versatile band, great live too. Opeth from their beginning, with the exception of Damnation, up to & including Watershed are pretty much progressive death metal, some black metal influences on their first couple of albums too. Point is you're going to hear lots of double bass drumming & growl vocals during that era. They seamlessly mix in beautiful mellow sections & clean vocals. And yes they sometimes take the unexpected, unorthodox path with their changes during a song. From Heritage forward is pretty much progressive metal/rock without growl vocals. I recommend initially sticking with songs from Still Life to Watershed to get a good feel for the band. Damnation is very mellow with clean vocals. Once you get familiar with the band & how they incorporate mellow sections into their heavy songs, you'll appreciate Damnation a lot more imo. Glad you listened to them before Ne Obliviscaris since NeO is heavily influenced by Opeth. Oh, & Opeth & Tool are not really a good comparison, totally different bands.
People who have listened to Opeth for a long time tend to have a hard time with some of their new albums, which are far less metal and steering more into the prog. rock direction, but I love all of their stuff. Going to one of their concerts with a friend who is as big of a prog. nut as I am, this January. I just hope they play all the old good stuff and less of the new stuff. As long as they play Bleak and/or Deliverance I'm satisfied.
If you enjoy Tool and also this, you should check out the band Soen, which features Martin Lopez on drums (the drummer in this song and ex-Opeth drummer). They are pretty much like a cross between Opeth and Tool.
Yo yo yo. You may have seen me recommend this on another reaction channel, but I recommend you guys check out Opeth - Strange Brew. A lot of the Opeth songs I do really enjoy have harsh vocals in them, but if you'd like to check out their more progressive rock side, with clean vocals, "Strange Brew" might be a solid choice to react to. Opeth (really the vocalist Mikael) has deviated from harsh vocals, and went more progressive rock in their last three albums. It may not be as complex as Ghost of Perdition, but I think "Strange Brew" is a great tune from their more recent catalogues.
So, I put off watching this video because I’ve been battling a migraine. Thought I could handle it today but the growls and repetition did me in. Maybe I’ll watch again when I feel better.
Great Band! Great choice!. I personally love the mix of growled and clean vocals. Light and shade. They have pretty much ditched the death metal sound on recent albums for a more proggy sound. You should definitely delve deeper. The more you hear it, the more you'll love it. After that you 'll be ready for Meshuggah!
After they got rid of the growling with Heritage they became my favorite modern Prog band! All their albums since have been amazing. Do their latest release, Dignity.

Leper affinity is so fire
Ahh the Opeth cherry,... Its confusion, Appreciation, Trepidation.. Its all in one..
My favorite Opeth song so far! I’m late to the game though, just got into them a few months ago. Idk what I’ve been doing my entire adult life...
Ok... Here it goes.
Eternal rains will come
Serenity painted death
Windowpane
Hex omega
Bleak
Most and best diverse list of opeth songs. All are increíble. And good reaction material. All from different albums
(Not all of then have growls. Thats why i started with eternal rains will come)
Nice, more Opeth!
Awesome band! Keep rocking!!🤘😈🎸💀🖤💀
As far as progressive Rock goes, Tool, Opeth, and The Mars Volta are my personal big 3. You guys just opened up a box full of goodies with this one. “To Bid You Farewell” is probably my favorite by them.
Best prog band is jethro tull
@@sandrosarunic9486 I don’t give a fuck what you think lol
Having grown up on Orchid and Morningrise, the middle ground of My Arms Your Hearse has remained my fave.
Seeing him play all of Damnation live is a concert highpoint, as well.
oh yes, Damnation is my favorite Opeth album
My arms your hearse is legendary, such a good record
Baying of the Hounds and Beneath the Mire are good ones off this album as well.
Well said. Im still waiting for a Tubular Bells reaction. You can add Ommadawn, Crisis (the song) and the eclectic genius that is Amarok
That first scream made me jump off the couch😂
Me too! omg. Jeez. :)
You need to do Opeth's - "Face Of Melinda" to understand the brilliance of what Opeth truly has to offer. Not the live version. (although it's great) .. but the studio version. Get on it!
Opeth and Tool. My two ultimate favourite bands!
" feel that Jack the Ripper has. ruclips.net/video/TVQgkrFltmM/видео.html
Quite a lot of their songs relate to actual murderers, so that might be the case here.
Guys listen to Face of Melinda
it's a more accessible opeth song without growls
I've seen them three times and yes they can do it live, plus Akerfelt's between song banter is hilarious. The death metal vocals are definitely an acquired taste, but he puts a lot more dynamics in them than most folks who do it. I quite like it. He's mostly stopped doing them anymore, the last couple albums were more pure prog and classic rock, i dig their whole catalog though.
hey guys, i agree with you all the way on this one
As a death metal vocalist, it's 100% an acquired taste. Glad you guys liked the song! One of my favorites.
a young Casey Neistat and Michael' Akerfeldt's brother enjoying some Opeth
Love Opeth! Check out Blackwater Park or Sorceress. You also need to check out Gojira (Flying Whales, Heaviest Matter Of The Universe, Stranded).
Ahaha the kid on the left looks like he is at a rave. Opeth on molly why not. Lol. Nice vid boys!
Great reaction! If you enjoyed this you’d love Ne Obliviscaris - And Plague Flowers the Kaleidoscope. Please react to it, it will not disappoint!!
Thanks A&A!
Ghost of Perdition is a brutal track to start with, but you did well - might I suggest Blackwater Park?
The death metal growls will grow on you. He is a very versatile singer in my opinion. Opeth is one of my favorite bands. They have so many epic songs. I would recommend listening to Burden or Will O the Wisp if you wanna hear their softer side . Reverie/Harlequin Forest is a masterpiece. I highly recommend 🤘🤘
I like Opeth - "Blackwater Park" a bit more, but I've only heard these 2 songs so far. We need some Mastodon..."Crack the Skye".
Dude you should check up still life
If you guys have a desire to dive deeper, Blackwater Park is an incredible song, and Deliverance has one of my favorite breakdowns ever
Opeth is my favorite band of all time. Check out the Drapery Falls. Probably the most Opeth-y song there is (of era 1 Opeth at least)
Luckily, there are quite a lot of good live versions to choose your next Opeth reaction from :-)
You could check their latest release, Dignity. Insane song
Guys, check out "face of Malinda" if you like the music but not the growls. Trust me
More opeth to the people... so many great songs from the genius 🤘🤘
Deliverence
Dignity
To bid you farwell
Every track
Btw, this might be one of the better songs of theirs to start with. So good job for whoever recommended this.
Check out the title track of Deliverance. Quite possibly the best outro in the history of metal
You guys should check out Animals as Leaders! Would love to see a reaction video for them. Just don't start with CAFO. I'd recommend Tempting Time, personally.
Hey Andy, Alex, check out the band Queensryche, this is one of their more chill songs,
this was their homage to Pink Floyd,
you’ll like this one, drop this into youtube search:
Queensryche - Silent Lucidity (Official Music Video)
We need some Queensryche for sure...fingers crossed.
How about some Jet City Woman ?
@@MrDeadstu I love that song, apparently it's a song about Seattle their home town, but any song from 'Empire' is a winner :)
I can hear one of Periphery's influences. Never noticed it before. You guys should definitely check out Dream Theater's first album by the way.
Ive heard of this band but never heard anything from them until now. Seems pretty trippy
For a different kind of song of their's, I recommend Opeth - Burden.
Anyone that reacts to OPETH gets my sub (:
fucking love this band
Agalloch….'In the shadow of our pale companion'.....you're welcome!
Opeth is definitely an acquired taste, since it has been 4 months you guys should give them another chance!
Grateful Dead- Birdsong live 08/27/72!!
They did this song for a recent live DVD here: ruclips.net/video/BAlDEcQMLio/видео.html
Opeth
The Grand Conjuration
The Drapery Falls
The Lotus Eater
Sorceress
People who have listened to Opeth for a long time tend to have a hard time with some of their new albums, which are far less metal and steering more into the prog. rock direction, but I love all of their stuff. Going to one of their concerts with a friend who is as big of a prog. nut as I am, this January. I just hope they play all the old good stuff and less of the new stuff. As long as they play Bleak and/or Deliverance I'm satisfied.

STANK FACE.
If you enjoy Tool and also this, you should check out the band Soen, which features Martin Lopez on drums (the drummer in this song and ex-Opeth drummer). They are pretty much like a cross between Opeth and Tool.
More Opeth please!
Check out anything from the Damnation album..It will blow your mind..guaranteed.. It's Chill Opeth....
And I second on listening to Jinjer -Pisces. You’ll be surprised ✌🏼🎸🎶
