Very glad I found this video. I think this is what happened with my trans. I'm about 3/4 of the way tearing it down. I think the counter shaft got so much play it jammed into the support roller bearing and destroyed it. This would explain the drivetrain sloppy feel I've had for years.
Great info I am rebuilding my trans now and I had some idea that I needed to mic. the thrust washers but did not know the problem these were having
Glad this could help you! We are a Verus Engineering dealer and stock the upgraded Synchrotech CF Synchros. A must for a rebuild!
@@CMAutohaus saw some people are complaining about the cf synchro, as the cf pad can detach from the brass part\ hard to shift with those synchros
From your experience, what is a must to do when opening this transmission?
What do usually breaks\ do not return back in place and should be bought new
@@amirweissbrotI had one CF pad detach after 12 tracks days, but Synchrotech replaced it under warranty for me although, it looks like even if the CF pad detaches, it will not fall out and the synchro will work as intended.
I completely disagree with the "hard to shift" - 1st requires a bit more force to get into gear, but otherwise at speed and in anger the transmission shifts much better with the CF synchros
As far as what should be replaced during a rebuild, everything that is worn, which will be A LOT as metallurgy is TRASH inside these transmissions. Even low mileage ones, I've had to replace multiple gears due to chipped dog teeth..
@@CMAutohaus can you be more specific?
The issue i feel is the 3rd to 4th grind above 5 5.5 rpm...
The issue is that i have only one transmission and i will not have ability to order parts for it after i open it so i need to have a set of things that it is better to replace\ breaking usually when this trans is opened, BEFORE i open it... 😃
@@amirweissbrot I guarentee 4th gear dog teeth are worn. You will need a new 4th gear and shift sleeve at the least. I buy a new 3rd gear while you're there because I bet the dog teeth are worn as well.
How do you know the AZ6 commonly fails due to the thrust-washer, is it that the factory issue bulletins about it, or its generally known as the source of problems?
Same architecture as the Toyotas J160 and Nissan S15 gearbox. Thrust-washer is a documented common issue. Also have seen it in person on TL70.
@@CMAutohaus oh man, i just discovered this video you made ruclips.net/video/YbBQYqiSosE/видео.html i was hoping someone made this video, and you did!
Awesome vid! I bought the synchros that you mentioned in your other vid. Where did you get the blown up diagram for the trans?
Subaru Parts catalog. I just googled around for a Subaru parts website that had the parts diagrams
@@CMAutohaus thank you. I have tried that, i keep getting sent to the subie site, but it doesn't break it down like you showed here. Im building my trans, so im looking for all the little parts that hold it.together.
@@1atinlove the diagram at 1:50 is from the subaru Factory Service Manual - Manual Transmission/transaxle. You can find it online
I know this is a really old video but I recently just started having transmission issues. Like I lost all my gears recently except for 5th gear which is the gear I can actually move in. I can move the shifter freely into any gear while the engine is running and while the clutch is engage which shouldn't be the case. I also am started to hear a thumping sound inside the transmission while in neutral. I'm been asking mechanic buddies who have done transmission jobs what could be the cause but I've been getting different answers. Also I did a clutch job on the car everything is aligned properly and torques to spec so I know it's not my clutch components.
Buy a used trans off ebay of LKQ. These are cheap and plentiful.
@@CMAutohaus that's what I assumed and probably will have to end up doing. People kept asking me "you sure your master cylinder is good" I'm like my pedal isn't stuck to the floor nor is it spongy so yes it's fine😂. Thanks for your response I just needed a ASE opinion 🙏
@@CMAutohaus also I do have to add I take full accountability for driving with only half a quart of trans fluid when I did my first clutch job Ill never do that again. It's just weird the night it happened I felt a slight jerk then 6th gear just was gone revs went up and I wasn't moving anywhere. 5th is literally the only gear that "locks in" as far as shifting i can get into any gear they just don't move the car and I can let off the clutch without the car stalling.
The release bearing the pilot bearing could be bad also could be the release bearing support shaft
